Solutions to complete the Season (4 Viewers)

Would Sunderland get a free year of parachute payments if they voided the season?

No clearly not and would like us have huge issues. We of course have huge issues rescheduled if we do go again as Birmingham will also I assume have games to play in a compressed period

Weather would be better though and pitch would hold up better than it has the past couple of months.

10 games to be played at St Andrews in a couple of summer months would be no issue

How are Sky and BT going to to deal with this? I can't see them refunding customers in longer term contracts even though there will be weeks, if not months of no televised football.

If it's delayed until May, the leagues could play two games a week until conclusion. Have a shorter summer break or start the new season in September.

I’m going to a couple of concerts next week - no doubt there is no social distancing - if I never post on here again we know what’s happened

Yes and for one season only play no Cup games which would cut the number of games played by everyone and help the new season finish on time.

Doing the rounds saying that if theres more than 75% of a season completed, then the league are within their right to complete it as it stands. Obviously this is just a rumour. If people are wondering we have completed 77%.

I've spent the day being a geek and reading through all the EFL rules and didn't see anything regarding this situation (but I do now know the kit selection priority between teams, goalkeepers and officials). Without a clear rule I think any decision would be made by a vote of members and the threshold for passing any decision would likely be quite high (75%+ I imagine)

I don't think another ball will be kicked this season. Infections are going to rise and it will be seen as callous to continue.

There will probably be a vote and as 90% of clubs will benefit from voiding that will be the choice.

"We have to choose the fairest route for all involved" etc
30 odd, people died at a football match in 1985 - The game went ahead 2 hours later.
96 people died at a football match in 1989 - After a brief pause, the league fixtures were completed.
The credibility of the footballing authorities is severely hanging in the balance right now. There will be no cancellation.

How do two separate incidents relate to a prolonged pandemic that won't hit it's peak until another ten weeks?

This is an unprecedented event. Don't act like you're sure of what will happen.

The footballing authorities don’t have any credibility - they have gone against the guidance given by the Chief Medical Officer.

If the season is suspended and has to be started from scratch next season, could we start on +points?

WAR (world war) is the only event that disrupts regular football. We'll discuss this again in the summer, fellatio.

I'm just making this up as I go along but I'm thinking in terms of, if they really can't complete the games over the spring / summer, they could go with no promotions or relegations this season but add the points each team has earned this season to next seasons points. So the end of next season would include this season's points as well. They would need some formula to level up games played this season. Obviously it would be better for us to end the season early and promote / relegate as it stands but I really can't see them doing that.
You need to have lie down bud !

Make every remaining game a penalty shoot-out.
One player to come out on the field at a time to avoid infection.

It's unrealistic to expect the season to be completed as the pandemic is about to go full blown in the next couple of months. I think they will settle on giving every team 1 point for games not played. It is the only fair way and one I believe will be acceptable to the majority (although not the clubs getting relegated I suspect).

Still can’t get my head around voiding the season being a solution to anything
It's a solution because it's the easiest thing to do. No promotions are guaranteed so technically no-one is missing out, while clubs that are relegated and being punished without having fully earned it. No-one knows exactly what is going to happen but voiding is definitely a real possibility.

Just can't see it. Everyone I hear on 5Live is talking about playing the season out, however long it takes.

I think so many will lose faith in football if a whole season is just simply voided.

Not fair on Liverpool, who have had such a sensational season. Not fair on Sheff Utd, who are having a fantastic season too, as are Leicester.

Not fair on Burnley and Southampton and Palace, who could all have been expected to be fighting relegation and are well clear

There are 13 teams in the Championship, all with the potential to make the playoffs. Even QPR in 13th place are just 6 points shy of 6th place.

Not fair on any of those teams. Not fair on Leeds at the top, who are 7 points clear of the side in 3rd and who were last in the Premier League in 2004.

In League One, 9th place Doncaster are just 5 points away from a playoff place. No fair on any of those sides still in with a chance. Not fair on the City of course.

Down to 9th in League Two is only 4 points off a playoff spot.

There are teams that will be mid-table in all leagues that will have been expected to struggle. For them, to be clear of the threat of relegation is a successful season

I think voiding the season will cause real damage to clubs and fans and create a lack of trust and belief.

Surely it will always be in the backs of our minds in years to come that even if you are 20 points clear with 7 games to go, you could still have that certainty ripped away from you if anything like this happened again.

Sure, highly unlikely, but these are mad times we are living in.

Was listening to 5Live a lot yesterday. The general sense I was getting was that they have to finish this season at all costs

To not do so could cause real damage to faith and belief in this great sport of ours.

I’m going to see the world famous psychic Clinton Baptiste tonight, he,s bound to know if we win the league or not, I’ll report back later this evening with the answer

There’s only one way to settle it. FIGHT!

(apologies if anyone has already used this line but I can’t be arsed to trawl though 5 pages to check)

That would make the best sense in many ways. Increase the Premier League for one season, but then it is unfair that only two go up and there is no play off for the third promotion slot in the Championship.

The difficulty there is that it works for Liverpool and the Premier, but does not work for the lower tiers.

Why should the bottom Premier clubs be immune from relegation, but the Championship, L1 and L2, not?

Ideally play out the season , if not possible find a formula like D-worth -Lewis from cricket , based on previous fixtures and predicted results against remaining teams . Biggest disappointment seeing our club have one of our best seasons on record and potentially none of us being able to see us win the title , 87 win fa cup banned from playing in Europe , 2020 world pandemic possibly scuppers promotion and being crowned champions .. oh the joy of being a cov fan
