just to ensure people get a balanced view on the ventilator situation. Not wanting to a appear a Tory spokesman again ROS... but it also isn’t difficult to find other, more positive articles regarding U.K. ventilator situation (in addition to Dysons order for 10k last week)

Ventilator Challenge UK to start production in Covid-19 fight

F1 team helps to create coronavirus breathing aid

I don’t know whether the above will be sufficient, or arrive in time, or what the governments testing/order criteria was when deciding why to go for some manufacturers and not others (hopefully quality and speed in large numbers rather than cost)

This part of the article may be why they didn’t proceed with G-Tech

‘Gtech could produce around 100 per day within a week or two providing we could find steel fabrication and CNC machining companies to help us make some of the parts."

ie are reliant on others and possibly two weeks until they start production

ps I reduced my time on this thread last week as some of the framing of arguments or stories (government intentionally massaging death causes/figures etc) was getting crazy and to be honest seeing the constant unbalanced negativity isnt healthy. There’s genuine concerns over some of the governments actions/inaction but also a load of absolute nonsense on here
Dont post anything pro uk on here you'll be baracked beyond belief.

Holding the government to account for lack of ventilators and PPE is pro UK.
Making excuses for incompetence of a few Etonians isn't.
Even if they all had the correct ppe then youd find something else to complain about. Hopefully after this has finished the government will put the nhs top of their priorities. Theres no excuse for then not to have the proper equipment but this is a freak occurrence and I actually think the government are doing a half decent job.lets not pretend itd be any better under labour.

No company can manage on little or no income for months on end. Can you even accept that?
Yes I can. Like I said,we're due back on the 20th April. If we're not allowed back to work then I imagine they might turn to the government for help. The last time our company asked for financial support back in 2008 the labour party told us to fuck off.

They were warned about lack of ventilators in 2016.But ignored the warnings

We have 6 ICU beds per 100000, Germany have 29.
Overall capacity in the NHS has been slashed since they put that private health care guy in charge of NHS England.

That's down to poor government. Nothing to do with Labour, nothing to do with the current crisis. Why does a working man feel the need to defend them, it's weird.

As for the government's handling of the crisis I would agree they're not doing too bad and have said so but that doesn't excuse the other stuff I've mentioned.

Not being allowed back is a measure being taken for your own health

So you know for sure JLR aren't going to apply for the grant?

It would not work for JLR - if cars and parts and being sold within a month or two I can’t see how the company can carry on in business

Struggling? This has put a spanner in the works but between the 2 build halls they're still knocking out 70 cars an hour. Admittedly 1 build hall is only on 2 shifts while the other is on 3.

They'll be struggling with cash flow and I think the car market is going to take a long time to recover.

The spread of coronavirus in the UK is showing "early signs" of slowing down since the lockdown, according to a leading government adviser.

Strict measures came into place across the country a week ago.

Prof Neil Ferguson, from Imperial College London, says some indicators, such as the numbers of new hospital admissions per day, suggest the spread does "appear to be slowing down a little bit".

He told the BBC's Today programme that the numbers hadn't "plateaued" yet and were still increasing each day, "but the rate of that increase has slowed".

However, he added that this pattern hadn't been reflected in the number of deaths - but these usually lagged a long way behind.

Niall Ferguson has said he thi is the rate of infection in the is slowing but will only be able to back it up with decent data once we up our testing but potentially good news.

Yeah saw this. It's why it's important to look at the number of new cases each day as well as the death rate. The death rate will continue to rise over the next week or two as that lags behind due to the time it takes Coronavirus to take hold in those affected.

Couple of points of note though. I saw some figures from Italy earlier last week which looked their death rate was decreasing 2 or 3 days on the bounce. Then it spiked to a record the next day so hopefully we see this slowing, continue for a period of more than 2-3 days. Secondly, I hope that if the new cases numbers do continue to slow/plateau, that everyone continues with the lockdown/social distancing for a while longer. I can just see some idiots seeing the figures stabilising and thinking that things are ok now...going outside socialising etc.

Good post and was about to post the BBC article myself as I've just read it. I just can't see why the Govt would turn down the chance to increase ventilator stock...it's non-sensical so there's got to be rational reasons for doing so (if true in the first place which I am sceptical about).

And another good thing that's come of all this is the resilience of firms to work together in times of need.

Lol wish I could earn as little as that

Im not being flippant. Someone I knew was a analyst two levels below a manager was on £55k - an average would be £45k - it would just about cover a new graduates wage in the office

Please explain the positives in these facts:

1. We clearly do not have enough ventilators https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-52087619
2. We refused to be a part of an EU scheme to procure more ventilators, then had to backtrack very quickly and tell more lies
3. Local companies are confirming that we scrapped orders for ventilators that have now shipped overseas- this has been going on since day one by the way.
4. The government has denied placing any orders on Dyson after Dyson saying he had received an order for 10,000 Coronavirus ventilators will not be ready until 'coming months,' UK government admits.
5. The Dyson ventilator is at prototype stage and is therefore around a month from anything like mass production, by which time predicted deaths are well over 5,000

The F1 team piece of info is indeed great news. But the rest is shit.

Did the government not say 'up to' £2.5 k a month meaning that they could still provide these guys with something rather than nothing, even if it were equivalent to a mahoosive pay drop?

The lockdown here is stricter than there and the 40k fines were from 2 weeks ago before tighter restrictions were brought in.

There are more people out and about in the UK by the looks of it due to the rules not being as strict. The way people are going out and walking there wouldn’t be allowed here and you’d be liable to a €3,000 fine.

Is the UK testing people as much as here? My sister is now recovering from it and her husband had it but they haven’t and won’t be tested, so that could well be a reason.

I’m not sure why you’re looking at the deaths to see if the lockdown is having an impact anyway, surely the new cases is more relevant?

That number is stable and I think improving; the peak is estimated to be one week away, which is good news.

As I’ve said before as well, those who died with Coronavirus are included in the figures, they did not necessarily die from Coronavirus.
Seen a comment from Dom saying they are seeing it slow down in the UK due to lockdown etc this is why it makes me question has it been a “lockdown” in Italy
In Spain.

What's weird? Having a different opinion? I'm not defending anybody you just blindly hate the Tories. Everything else I agree with.

Without extensive testing how can they be sure it is slowing down? As I said, if you have the symptoms here you will be tested if you want to be.
The lockdown here has been far stricter than the one there.

If your mortgage is based on your salary it won’t help really. Also I don’t see how it works for a huge company unless it’s people on minimum wage. How would you decide who to put on it? Traditionally companies like these offer big redundancy packages to trim staff. The real issue is the level of spend on investment will be dwarfing salaries. JLR even in good times has awful cash flow and they won’t just be able to switch on again when this stops. Many manufacturing businesses big and small will be in the same boat - industry will just collapse

I think he said the rate had slowed but he number of deaths will lag far Behind but yes I get your point regarding the testing mate, hoping Italy numbers fall again today.
