Other than Brexit was close but the GE wasn't. And people seemed to trust a clown like Boris more than Corbyn.

The GE was as close as the referendum it’s just a different voting system. Remain parties won just over 50% of the votes and Leave parties just under 50%, basically the same as the referendum but reversed. Just taking the major parties it was 43.6% Con vs 43.8% Lib/Lab.

Also Johnson only improved on Mays results by 1.2%, the big difference was people abandoning Corbyn (-7.9%) rather than overwhelming support for Johnson.

Is some of this down to the relative stability of the UK in the post war years? i.e. it hasn't led to many people getting involved in politics because they want change

I think there’s a bit of that. Overall I think politicians accepted the “end of history” with Thatcher and that’s put some of the tools necessary to give people what’s needed, especially after a massive recession, beyond the political pale.

Any sensible government would be creating decent jobs, boosting manufacturing, building council housing, the sort of stuff we did with post war Germany to stop the rise of populism but these are all either seen as impossible/a relic of the past, or thanks to changes in globalisation such as loosening restrictions on moving money and business internationally just aren’t possible.

In many ways the globalised economy has neutered national politics.

A lot of people voted Tory that wanted to remain in the EU. I work with a fair few.

I grew up with an interest in politics in the 70's and 80's. You had no choice when you had those like Thatcher in charge.

I don't say politics are in the gutter for no reason. I can't think of one who deserves respect ATM. It seems it is more important to tick all the boxes on minorities/women than those best for the job.

PPE gowns bought for NHS from Turkey unusable

The PPE we ordered from Turkey and then had to go and pick up is now sat in a warehouse because it isn't up to standard.

Just looking at voting statistics in the last GE for age group and having read the Guardian article Stu has linked are the Tories decimating their target audience for votes? You were more likely to vote Tory if you were elderly or have parents who are. With the way the government has palmed of the Coronavirus issue off onto care homes wouldn’t that make you think at the next GE of how you were treated during this, or how you will be treated if you go into a care home during the next term, or how your parents were treated in all of this, or how your parents could be treated in the next term if they have to go into a care home?

They hadn't even been ordered at the point the government were saying it was on its way here in their daily briefing. No way after that they couldn't order it, probably hoped nobody would find out it was sat in a warehouse and of no use.

Raises some good points. The knock on effects could be huge, both politically and economically. As May points out there is a risk nationalism and isolationism could rise further and have long term damaging effects globally. .

Which we are as much a part of as anyone with Brexit and the rhetoric surrounding it. Just look at our response to this crisis. It's almost Empire-like in it's 'Britain Knows Best' approach.

Think it was done directly by a government desperate for a headline. Still, it’s not like we had an RAF plane sat on a Turkish runway for three days waiting for the order to be completed putting pressure on getting the order ready so processes were missed meaning that the quality were inferior. Imagine what they would have looked like if they’d got them ready for the day that the government was saying that they were initially being picked up, I doubt they’d have made the journey back. The other reality was that the quantity didn’t even amount to one full shifts worth for every health care professional that required them. Just another pointless headline from a headline government.
