That indeed is how the BBC reported it. The actual ruling is that it will only be applied if it makes a material difference to the finish of the season. If Wigan finish 13 points or more above the drop it gets applied next season. If Wigan finish in the relegation zone it also gets applied next season (unlikely). Chances are they will finish within 12 points of relegation so it'll all be moot.

Ah right, thanks for the clarification mate :) bloody BBC reporting

The BBC reported it correctly. If they finish outside the bottom 3 the points get deducted this season.

EFL statement: Wigan Athletic

How do you conclude that? The BBC article is clear, it applies this season unless they finish in the relegation zone anyway in which case it applies next.

This rule was introduced to stop clubs deliberately declaring themselves in admin after going down in order to game the system and avoid an effective penalty.

But the question has to be how can a club 4 weeks after a takeover (and apparently linked to the former owner) end up in admin? The due diligence by the club and/or the EFL ownership test should've flagged that up.
I don’t know if you have read the article written by a Wigan journalist. The buyer who bought the club off Dave Whelan seemed cosha and fit and proper was okay but then sold to this other group that’s if they exist could have even been to himself they don’t know. who also seemed okay, after a couple of weeks or so put the club into administration, obviously a thought out plan, that could happen to anyone.

Interesting extract from another forum re: Wigan

They wouldn't get an automatic points deduction next season. They would however get a 15 points deduction next season if they don't agree a CVA which guarantees creditors receiving at least 25% of what they are owed.

Magwitch - try reading that again, and have another go mate........

The foot of the championship is equally crazy. Wigan hve 15 point deduction to add which will relegate them. The fight for the other two to stay up is anybodies guess.

Not so the premier league. After today I find it extremely unlikely the current bottom three are getting out of it. So we have 3 very atractive away days at Norwich, Bournemouth and dare I say Villa next season to look forward to. Would love to see O'Hare in our side for that one.
Thought it was 12 Points Pax?

Don’t know how accurate these accounts are might be bollox, Just listened another interview on YouTube don’t know how accurate it is chap on there was saying he didn’t think this new owner had passed the fit and proper test.
Do you know different then ?

Yep, sorry, you're right - I've just re-read the EFL regulations. If they finish 13 points above the relegation zone it would still be applied this year and would stay up. Would be a bit of a let off.

Think it's probably unlikely they'll stay up anyway to be honest. They're essentially bottom at the moment. It's getting tight though.

Wigans next two games are against Hull and Charlton so they've still got a chance

I think he meant that if you tried using punctuation, your posting might make some sort of sense.

Amazing in a way only got into play-offs due to games played shot them from eighth to third and their odd game in hand was away to us and at the time form wise we were hot favourites to beat them, as for Oxford they were the best team I saw us play, Never saw either Rotherham games.
Football is a funny old game.

Whether we get the usual 6 points off them or mot next season, I;ll be surprised if they don't finish bottom of the pile. Just need a couple of others from the Championship to incur points penalties for next season to give us an extra boost.

They've had a lot of luck. They would have struggled to make the playoffs if the season had finished, Fleetwood gifted them the semifinal and Oxford gifted them the final.

They had the lowest possession and passing stats in the league and scored the majority of their goals from set pieces. I can't believe they'll get away with that in the championship.

They actually got promoted because of our cup run.

You knew damn well it was going to be Wycombe after they pipped Peterborough to the play offs. Three convincing wins though, that's not luck!

It was only the two as they drew with Fleetwood 2- 2 at their place.

The first leg of the semi final was convincing (largely due to the clown in Fleetwood's goal), the second leg was a draw, and they nicked a late winner tonight with a penalty (which was offside in the build-up). Not sure how that is 3 convincing wins!

Good fortune was smiling on them that's for sure. Not sure the posh are happy with this final outcome. I only see them struggling in the championship tbf.

Strange coincidence that our last 2 promotions have coincided with Wycombe’s (League 2 to League 1 and League 1 to Championship). Might be a good omen for us to have them in the same division as us next season. Congratulations Wycombe!

And If Luton stay up it'll be a League 2 reunion in the Championship.
