France to reopen the border at midnight.

Suspect this has less to do with 'the strain' than they have been making out. I suppose having truck drivers shiting in bushes at Dover isn't a good look for the EU.

Suspect a deal might be about to happen.

That and provided that the driver stays in the cab while the goods are offloaded, there isn't a transmission risk surely?

They've been shitting in the bushes down there for years!
Unless we stay in the CU I can only see an increase in the shifting though in inland port at Ebbsfleet is up and running now.

It’s going on around the world and isn’t just the EU - the restrictions on travel from the UK is down to each individual country rather than the EU.

Absolutely 'potty' the lack of facilities down there .

A travel ban on people is a fair & reasonable short-term response, especially with the alarmist language used by Hancock et al....But its only the French who closed their border to freight........with no real justification.....just a very blunt (and cruel) instrument of leverage....

Must be a reason, but why can't the freight drivers (whatever country they are from) just have the vaccine? No need to keep testing them at the ports for 3/6/12 months.

Loads of the stranded have been using the facilities at the already bursting supermarkets etc.....bit worrying when places like Ashford & Dover are pushing 900/100k cases

Yeah, macrons dropped a bollock. If they didn’t have it, they are far more likely to have it now. Yet they’ll have a dodgy operation moonshoot test and either to get it back to the continent (possibly with Covid contracted from waiting around) or now be stuck here for a couple of weeks ?!!

Think from the ECs reaction yesterday he lacks support on this. Not to mention a large number of drivers from around Europe who now might not get home for Christmas and the disruption to EU companies supplies into UK...

It probably hasnt quite gone to plan !

The land of milk and honey is just around the corner guys

Its far better than the alternative though Pete whichever side of the argument you’re on, so hope it’s the news is correct

We’ve been out of the EU since the start of 2020 anyway.....it’s gone rather well dont you think 😳 (gallows humour, probably not appropriate so apologies, these are truly shit times but next year will be better)

There are some seriously bitter people on this thread. Honestly guys, give yourselves a break.

We've already lost martcov and Ring of Steel by the looks of it. Don't get added to that list.

No deal was never going to happen. It’s always been a smokescreen to set the bar low. It would’ve been economic carnage on a scale never seen before in this country and entirely of our own making. There’s not a politician on earth who would willingly let that happen on their watch.

Let’s be clear, four years down the line, from a government in total control of how things were done, what we’ve got will be a very pale imitation of what we had or what was promised. Don’t let them pass it off as a success just because it isn’t disaster. That’s this governments favourite trick.

We were promised life would be better. Hold the fuckers to that. Whatever you voted for.

Did those two ever post at the same time?

tbf, some people probably have more intelligence than me, and decide life is better doing things other than argue with strange people on the internet.

Either that, or they're no longer with us...

I hope I'm not tempting fate saying this without seeing any detail but it's got to be better than a no deal surely?

Wonder how things would have gone on all round if Sinn fein had ever taken their seat's.
Does anyone have a view if that event will ever occur.
Or what rhe prevailing conditions would need to be if/when it does?0

Never happen. Republicans are the only people in the U.K. who will come out of the Brexit debacle with any sense of satisfaction.

I think you’re too optimistic.

If Boris Johnson can be relied on for one thing (and the only thing) it’s saving his own skin and trying to not be unpopular.

He’s always wanted to be the conquering hero returning with a deal from the brink. The only question will be what do we give up to enable it.

Depends on your viewpoint I guess Clint. ERG would probably prefer a no deal, cut all ties etc etc and find our own way in the world totally free of everything EU related ! I think most sane people will probably be happy with a free trade deal that gives us an element of freedom and hopefully doesn’t impact GFA. I also liked our agreement to the apparent non regression clauses.

I think you or someone else mentioned how a no deal would not only be a shitstorm in terms of EU but actually weakens our negotiating position with other countries (whoever said it I agree with 100% especially in the short to medium term - harder to say longer term as depends on divergence clauses).

The devil will be in the detail though so will also caveat all of the above with a let’s wait and see if we get a deal signed (Johnson’s got it in him for a last minute f*ck up) and then what’s actually in it !
