European breakaway league (31 Viewers)

They've actually made UEFA/FIFA look like the good guys which is some achievement.

I really hope they call their bluff and tell the clubs to piss off

problem is, it's not a bluff.

The overseas market is the target
So let them fuck off over there and play, I've spoken to quite a few 'plastics' today and they've all said they'd be done with their clubs if they do this.

Imagine the ESL being played to empty houses , I don't think it would last long , whilst the revenue from gate receipts is minimal the atmosphere created isn't.

But the same arguments have been made before every comparable shake-up (the Premier League, the Champions League etc) and we keep flocking back with our BT Sport and Sky subscriptions every time.
Theres a subtle but important difference. The past occurrences have basically just been revamps of existing competitions. Yes, they have diverted more money to the teams at the top but essentially they still have sporting integrity. You can get promoted and relegated from the PL and you qualify for the Champions League by finishing in the higher league positions.

Thats very different to what is being proposed now.

Reading the BBC reports the press conference from the UEFA president was quite something. Talk of throwing clubs out of this seasons European competitions and banning players from playing internationally in Euro 2020.
He started on the offensive and kept going, calling the people responsible for the Super League plans 'liars' and 'snakes'.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was blasted, Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli was accused of walking away from his member clubs.

Ceferin said he will be talking to lawyers tomorrow to see if there is any potential for clubs being thrown out of European competition - five of them are due to play in Champions League or Europa League semi-finals next week - and players being barred from Euro 2020.

To ask fans to have boycott games etc just wouldn’t have worked pre lockdown, now post lockdown much more likely too

The silence from managers and players involved in these teams is deafening. Obviously it's their employers but still. Fuck the lot of them.

Actually that's probably harsh, but there's got to be something said by someone soon surely?

I think we need to give it a day or two, but they do really need to be coming out and at least be saying something

I bet Klopp goes all "no comment" or similar on MNF tonight after vehemently opposing it before.

Sky on about sources from a board member of one of the 6 English clubs.

It’s all about making money. (I’m paraphrasing)
And they’ll be secretly pleased if their players get banned from playing for their country as it means less games played.

It’ll be unwatchable crap to real fans. Every team stuffed full of diving, whining cheats. VAR extended to analyse every tackle, effectively a no contact ‘sport’. The PL on steroids.

Give me the Championship any day.

Was thinking this myself. It won't really affect me. I'll be up the ricoh watching city and not giving a second thought to the epl.

Me either really, but look at the bigger picture. That’s exactly what these “big six” wankers are being vilified for, for not doing.

It comes to something when reporters, talk shows etc. who are paid to try to be impartial are, in the vast majority, in agreement and totally against this.

Yeah , but theres not a lot I can do.
If they get bombed out of the EPL I'll feel sorry for their supporters but there's not much I can do to help them.

I’m talking more about the money that filters down the leagues to keep struggling league 1 and 2 teams a going concern. And further down to non league and grassroots. There will be less as a result of this. Shouldn’t be about money but it has to be. These super league bellends are purely about keeping it for themselves even more than the premier league. (Despite their little statement yesterday)

The build up to Leeds Liverpool is going to be interesting. Think the Liverpool coach will need a lot of police.

Yes, this. No loss to me personally at all as I havent' followed the PL since City were relegated. I think I've only watched the Champ League final once. No affinity or interest in football other than England or the Sky Blues.

Unfortunately seems they are more interested in selling subscriptions to far eastern "fans". The viewing figures for the Champions League must presumably out strip the PL overseas for them to want to go down this route.

Owners of huge football clubs would happily have empty stadiums if they could make enough money from TV revenue ...this is one of the reasons they couldn't give a shit about local supporters and favour the armchair fans , as they are much larger in number for these big clubs .

The biggest losers will be the home-based fans of the six, including those Man Utd fans from London. Could anything be more crushingly boring than watching the same 12 sides play each other time after time, with no result of importance?

Whilst there must be some concern about how it might financially impact the EFL, I'd be quite happy to see the likes of johnny-come-lately big money sonsored also-rans like Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs die in a corner somewhere. Shame about the other two, who to a degree have in the past built their successes on having a superior fanbase

Just heard somebody say the Chinese may not be so interested as the kick times midweek will make it early hours of the morning.

Won't happen imo. Just used as leverage to get uefa to concede more during CL reforms

Competition must be open. Thats the only thing I care about . Cov should be eligible to win the super league if it is creates. And thats not a joke

No fans is not good for tv product aesthetics also so I hope some arrange boycotts

It's ok they can play it on the weekend once they're kicked out of the PL

They can also time the start of their nfl super league season with the Chinese new year. Which reminds me, another positive - we won't have to hear any more bitchin about playing traditional festival season games.
