Callum Ball: On wanting to score goals and his strengths (3 Viewers)

ALTHOUGH Callum Ball faces plenty of competition for a place in Coventry City's starting line-up, he's confident he can make an impact at a club he admires for playing football.
The season-long loan from Derby * a strapping centreforward who will hopefully add weight and guile to Andy Thorn's attack * showed what he is capable of when he scored the winner against the Sky Blues in the 1-0 defeat at Pride Park last January.

“Someone pulled it back for me and I hit it right foot into the bottom corner,“ he said reflecting on the strike, which was one of three in total in a break-through season with the Rams.

“I think it was late on in the game and the winner as well.
The games I scored in were big occasions for me.

“You are judged on goals as a striker because that's your job and to score against Coventry was a pretty big thing for me. I said in the press conference afterwards that I thought they were the best team I'd played against football wise, so to be here now and playing for them is a big thing for me.

“As soon as Nigel Clough said Coventry were in for me I said they are a good footballing side and I'll go there straight away.

“I know it's going to improve me as a player and I'm a young lad who is hungry to play games.“

He added: “I made 14 starts and scored three goals so I had a good season at Derby last year and the manager said that this year it would be a bit up and down, starting some weeks and on the bench on others, and he said I would be better dropping down a division to get more experience and playing time. So I said I'd do it.

“I was a little bit surprised because I thought I had a good season last year to be fair but things like this happen and you have to go out and hopefully play more football and then I'll go back there next year and play more games for Derby.“

As for his strengths, which City fans will get to see for themselves at Nuneaton tomorrow afternoon, he said: “I like to hold the ball up and bring others into play, and get in the box and score goals.

“I can score with my head and either foot * a bit of a fox in the box hopefully.

“I can head it, kick it, anything really. I just want to score a few goals and help get Coventry promoted back to the Championship.

“I always put myself about and work hard and hopefully that will get the fans on my side.“

It's funny how a few teams or players praise us for being a good footballing side last season.

They just never mention our lack of penetration in final 3rd

Head and kick? Would be happy even if they go in off his backside

Can't work it out myself. We had RoD, Fat Freddie, Platt and sold Juke when he started scoring....

I know! It's a mystery. When King was with us we scored plenty - then he leaves and we stop scoring. Anyone would think there's some link between having good strikers and scoring goals...

Of course the real answer simply HAS to be that it's because Thorn is sweaty.

Thorn really is VERY sweaty; he makes me gag when I watch his post match interviews.

Sorry that's a total contradiction. If you haven't seen them play how do you know they don't fit the passing style?

I think the use of 'if' and 'is' and ending the sentence with a '?' prevents it from being a contradiction. And makes it speculation, based on the fact he hasn't seen them play.

I understood that but. You wouldn't go long to ibrahimovic for instance and he's 6 ft plus (no I'm not saying either player is like him)
Just because they're tall does not make them Clive platt

I agree, but if a player is under pressure at all, which will be a lot of the time, and we have two big men up front, the easy option is to launch it. Not saying it will happen, but it's more likely.

He suggested should they play together the passing game goes out the window. Then goes on to sat he hasn't seen them play. So no "ifs" or "?s" saves him

And why not? If a player can't make a clever pass then sure go long. Out of harms way.

IT WAS A QUESTION IDIOTS,thanks to hill83 and anyone else who was smart enough to understand it

i havnt seen them play,i have NOT judged them, i was simply alluding to how last year we forsaked the passing game to lump it upfield whenever platt was on the pitch and sometimes with juke too,im hoping they resist that temptation this year

feel free to apologise.

No option to buy then by the sound of it.

Yeah, that narked me. But then, an option to buy would mean us potentially paying a transfer fee, which is as likely as me winning Gold in the Olympics 100m.

was speaking to a derby season ticket holder yesterday and he reckons callum ball is absolute quality! He reckoned he was one of their best players last season and without injury and with a bit more experience he would have been a regular for them

Better to have tall strikers that can get to high balls than all short arses that can only watch the ball go over their heads all the time
