ALTHOUGH Callum Ball faces plenty of competition for a place in Coventry City's starting line-up, he's confident he can make an impact at a club he admires for playing football.
The season-long loan from Derby * a strapping centreforward who will hopefully add weight and guile to Andy Thorn's attack * showed what he is capable of when he scored the winner against the Sky Blues in the 1-0 defeat at Pride Park last January.
“Someone pulled it back for me and I hit it right foot into the bottom corner,“ he said reflecting on the strike, which was one of three in total in a break-through season with the Rams.
“I think it was late on in the game and the winner as well.
The games I scored in were big occasions for me.
“You are judged on goals as a striker because that's your job and to score against Coventry was a pretty big thing for me. I said in the press conference afterwards that I thought they were the best team I'd played against football wise, so to be here now and playing for them is a big thing for me.
“As soon as Nigel Clough said Coventry were in for me I said they are a good footballing side and I'll go there straight away.
“I know it's going to improve me as a player and I'm a young lad who is hungry to play games.“
He added: “I made 14 starts and scored three goals so I had a good season at Derby last year and the manager said that this year it would be a bit up and down, starting some weeks and on the bench on others, and he said I would be better dropping down a division to get more experience and playing time. So I said I'd do it.
“I was a little bit surprised because I thought I had a good season last year to be fair but things like this happen and you have to go out and hopefully play more football and then I'll go back there next year and play more games for Derby.“
As for his strengths, which City fans will get to see for themselves at Nuneaton tomorrow afternoon, he said: “I like to hold the ball up and bring others into play, and get in the box and score goals.
“I can score with my head and either foot * a bit of a fox in the box hopefully.
“I can head it, kick it, anything really. I just want to score a few goals and help get Coventry promoted back to the Championship.
“I always put myself about and work hard and hopefully that will get the fans on my side.“
