if you’re gonna list the ‘geniuses’ of the game, who did things you didn’t even think were possible, it’s a no. Baresi could play anywhere, it was effortless and he did things no defender should be able to do, I don’t see that in Maldini.

I’d put him in the ‘world class’ category with your Gullits, Bergkamps, Henrys etc, but not a stone cold all time football genius

baresi gets in, it’s a no from me for the other two.

At a push we could have had one- had Gascoigne had his head screwed on & looked after himself he could have made the list- he could do everything.

I think we'd have at least given Loris something to do. He wasn't tested at all tonight.

Possibly, we have the forward players to do so but with Southgate in charge I'm not sure. We didn't trouble an aging Croatia that much in all honesty and the thought of Mbappe and Co. against that defence is mildly concerning.

world class to me is when you’re in the top few in the world in your position. Bearing that in mind, probably neither of Sterling or Gnabry are in that group tbh. International class for sure though.

then you have the ‘all time greats’, and in my lifetime there have only been a few- Maradona, Zidane, Messi, Ronaldo (Brazil), Ronaldo (Portugal)- they’re the ones who can do things literally nobody else can do and hit levels nobody else has.

Playing a side with no natural striker on the pitch, who were toothless in the final third.

England not comparible to this Germany, we have a goalscorer .
Plus we have more threats from set pieces

And Walker will keep up with mbappe no problem

Would be a game for Grealish winning the set pieces I worry he won’t use him in such a big game but he for me is the one who causes them al sorts of problems

England have 1 maybe 2 world class players and one potential world class player. Germany have none, probably for the first time in more htan half a century.

But it's going to happen where a player that is going to be given offside by the assistant gets taken out with a late lunge from a desperate chasing defender and ends up with a serious injury unnecessarily.

Another example of Germany not being what they were. He's past his peak now and they just don't seem to have the options to replace him whereas before they'd be lining round the block.

Of the three best prospects in the Bundesliga two are English and one is Norwegian. There two centre forwards in the squad one is a former world class false nine well past hi peak and someone that can't score for toffee in the PL.

We just largely do it lip service and try and carry on as we were as much as possible because we've got this mindset that we're English, this is our game and there's no chance we're getting it that wrong. PL best in the world etc etc.

We're also largely a team build on a few star players rather than as a team. As a nation we're still largely obsessed with strikers and pacy flair players.

I'd probably suit a German set-up as I'd like the team all paid the same flat amount with extra payments based on minutes on the pitch and everyone earning goal bonuses and a clean sheet bonus in games regardless of whether you were the actual scorer/defender etc..

The last time they were in this position was 3 years ago and they have come back this time with the same system and same manager. At least the FA have invested in St Georges park and the academy system which is starting to show it might be of benefit with Foden, Sancho and Bellingham coming though.
