My question remains. Do you think having a manager with a very poor record is in any way a handicap?

I wouldn't say it is necessarily a handicap, but that does depend on whether he has learned lessons from what went wrong last season, including his own decisions. If he has, then last seasons poor record might even be a positive influence this season.

I was very critical of Thorn last season and for me he fell well short of what was required to be a good football manager.

This is a new season though and a fresh start. I'm sure he's had time to reflect and has learned from his mistakes and with the right back back room staff i am hoping he will make a much better fist of it this time round.

We have had managers in the Premier where we have had to compete against Liverpool and Man U and Chelsea and Arsenal etc.

Yes well done. He's kept within a budget that he wasn't allowed to exceed. He is the manager that' has taken us to a level of football we have not witnessed for 50 years. He has the worst management record of any football manager of this club since 1917.
He has the worst win ratio of any manager in Division 1.

I think Jose may have just about extracted another 10 points out of 46 games somehow. Losing from a winning position became Thorn's speciality something experienced good managers remedy.

That backing would be withdrawn from anybody if incurrinng huge losses and the strategy not working.

The greater the losses, the worse the team performed, the more he paid himself.

Do you think that loaning a Championship rival money to buy players was a good strategy?

The Football League, and most rational people wouldn't agree.

What a load of shit that we couldn't have signed Carroll and Henderson!!! For Christ sake they had both been labelled trouble makers by their clubs!

In Henderson's case he wasn't exactly brilliant for us either - so I doubt the Sunderland management at the time were thinking "oh crap he's a future star we'd better hang onto him". Steve Bruce coming in gave everyone a fresh chance and Henderson fought his was into his thoughts. I recall Bruce saying as much.

Andy Carroll meanwhile was busy fighting in bars.

How about somebody compiles stats that compare points won with playing budget and squad size?

You might find a few anomalies like Blackpool - but on the whole anyone with a brain those that those with the deepest pockets succeed.

I would say we have a top half league 1 squad - with our stars yet again leaving.

If you have a brain, judge a manager on the resources given to him; don't pretend that Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho etc are magicians that would get a team of children to win promotion if they were at City.

You can't just gloss over losing that number of players and pretend Andy Thorn should cope.

Let's take Man Utd as an example:

If they announce today that money is tight due to the debt they're in, and that 9 first team players have to leave, including Vidic, Rooney, Ashley Young, Scholes, Phil Jones etc - where would you expect them to finish this season? It's ok, they can bring in some children - er i'm sure that'd work...

Would this make Alex Ferguson a bad Manager? Would it?
