Actual situation is, of course, terrible. But it was inevitable. You put something that will corrode and oxidise into water and it's a matter of when this happens.
We're going to get way worse than this eventually. All that nuclear waste they encased in concrete and dumped in the sea. The half life of the radioactive material is thousands of years longer than how long the concrete and containers will survive so you'll have major radioactive spillages. Again, should have been bleeding obvious from the start.
As a species we can be absolute morons.
