Let's hope this geezer's right, and glass half full is the way to go(!)

Vaccines mean 'no need to wobble' on easing rules

There is no need to "wobble" on plans to ease coronavirus restrictions, says Prof John Bell, suggesting that immunity from vaccinations could be increasing over time.
The regius professor of medicine at Oxford University says he is encouraged by evidence that vaccines are "holding their own" by reducing the likelihood of hospital admission and death to "very small indeed" after both doses.
"That's what the government is counting on and I see no reason to wobble on that," he tells BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
"The second thing is, our immune responses seem to get better over time. After you've had two vaccines, when you pop back up six months later, your immune system has developed the response to the virus to an even more mature state.
"So, I think, not only have we got good immunity but that immunity may well improve over time. As you know, I'm a sort of a glass half-full guy and I'm sort of three-quarters full at the moment."

The sitting in a quiet cafe wearing a mask, or the freedom to manage it yourself?

The rule whereby in a small high street cafe for example, you can take your mask off to sit down where you're going to spend the majority of your time, and, especially if in company, expel the most virus (if you have it), but you must put a mask on to walk out of the cafe.

If the Guardian has its numbers right on isolations, then millions of us will find ourselves in a tougher lockdown after restrictions end than before. The isolation question is going to be one of the stories of the summer.

There's absolutely no chance that 10m people will voluntarily self-isolate over the summer.

Agree. Just move to the testing. Most people will self isolate if positive, a lot of people won’t if just told to self isolate because they’ve been near someone positive (especially if they subsequently tested negative). Get a structure in place to minimise risk and maximise compliance

Ps I’ll go one step further, people will just delete the app (when it’s not needed to get in places) which is far more dangerous

The media are acting outraged about the fact that people might actually use their own free will about whether to wear a face-nappy or not - god I hate them

I always admire your ability to shoe horn in some brackets in every post 👍

I think with masks, as they're to protect others and not yourself people are going to see some without and give up. The attitude being if they're not protecting me then why should I protect them.

I think the majority that still wear them will do so in the belief that they're protecting themselves.

This all comes from the poor education that the population have had since the pandemic started. Let's be fair, we were told for a long time that masks do nothing to stop the spread.

If you kindly ask one of the Doctors or Nurses about the benefits of face masks when you are emptying the bins you might learn something.

At the end of the day,it is just personal choice....end of - if you want to wear a mask that's up to you,but I'm going to choose not to because I have that right

Despite what some of you may think,I intend to still wear them on public transport & in shops etc if I see that others are anxious - I'm not a complete cretin
How will you judge the anxiety of a stranger?

I've seen this stated many times and it just seems illogical to me, as if masks only worked one way.

More stupid are those who say masks don't work, when clearly they do, to greater or less degree depending on the mask type and how they are worn/used.

Personally, it's been wonderful not to have had single cold or flu virus for the last 18 months, and its the reason why I'll be looking to wear mine as long as I can whilst managing the weight of the stares of the freedom brigade.

Obviously if on a bus for instance & they're wearing a mask that'd say to me that they're not comfy without one so I'd put one on - I'm on about more in a pub for instance
OK, that's fair enough. Now... how about toning the language down about face nappies etc. as that probably doesn't help anxiety of passing people, and it seems there's a path to redemption for you yet ;)

(FWIW if you're going into a pub and wearing a mask, you'll be struggling to drink a pint - which is where the rules were somewhat paradoxical, as no mask is pretty unavoidable in those circumstances!)

What harm does it do calling them that? It's only a word for gods sake
It turns out your position is actually fairly considerate. Calling them that and spouting off about how you're not going to wear one gives the impression, tbh, of an unhinged mentalist who's determinded to come and breathe in peoples' faces and hug them BECAUSE THEY CAN.

And that doesn't reassure about members of the public, their common sense, personal responsibility, and general looking out for others... unlike your later statements.

I honestly don't mean to upset anybody with my posts in this particular thread,I realise it's a bit of a hot potato talking about covid & restrictions etc - guess it's all just frustration coming out about wanting it over & done with - peace & luv to all

I'll carry on calling them face nappies if that's ok by you because that's how I feel about them.....geeeez

Nappy - a piece of towelling or other absorbent material wrapped round a baby's bottom and between its legs to absorb and retain urine and faeces.

As a mask neither goes around a babies ass or is there to absorb Urine or Faeces, I think you're probably using an incorrect term.

Your choice though.

Let's be honest, we all want it over and done with! There'll be nobody, *nobody* who thinks what they really enjoy is the feeling of oppression, isolation, threat, discomfort...

In January 2020, I doubt there was anybody making a New Year's resolution where they really longed for a global pandemic to take hold(!)

So odd. It’s a small sacrifice to make wearing a mask, even if it isn’t pleasant.

And it’s this type of stuff that causes resistance in some people. Myself I’m for anything that makes logical sense but this can’t of nonsense just stinks of a power trip and or paranoia
