This is mental to me. Spent £65bn on subsidising drivers.

I just don't get why just because the cost of gas goes through the roof they feel like it applies to all other forms of energy production /transport etc

There is no shortage of petrol right?
Of course I'd understand if it were to meet green criteria, I may be conflicting my point Lol

Hmmmm, ish. Even with the freeze don’t we have one of the highest fuel tax around ?

The problem has been successive governments have used fuel duty, car tax etc as a general public sector spend pot rather than focussing its use on public transport infrastructure, which has only recently started to improve. Most people would happily use decent public transport but the options in most places is poor and/or expensive

With you here but not sure about the later , people like there own secure personal space , it's unfortunately not in the British psyche to act altruistically in unison, just about everyone feels they're above it and unique in their view and needs

That’s a very fair point. Numerous times I’ve wanted to go somewhere by public transport, but the wait/cost has put me off. You can’t really start ratcheting drivers if you don’t give them somewhere to move to.

It's almost as if tax doesn't actually fund anything

Maybe if they made these pay tax NI wouldn’t have to go up.

They’ve paid £44billion in dividends in a period when they’ve paid no corporate tax, had a petroleum revenue tax basically scrapped and claimed £400million in tax relief. Still, at least it reflects in energy bills… er wait, no it doesn’t. #levellingup

As I've suggested, move tax away from the arbitrary figure that is profit and do it on stuff like dividends and interest.

Never understood why businesses get to use profit to work out tax but people have to have it on gross income. Fucked up thinking.

*Actually, of course I know why. Business people have a lot of political influence. Just mask it in a veneer of 'job creation'

Or because growth, expansion and conquest made it too big to control. Also if you invade places and take all it's riches as your own you can hardly be surprised when people in those conquered lands want to move to the place that's taken it.

But to be fair to Boris he's doing a great job of bringing immigration down. Pretty soon no-one will want to come here anyway.

Scary piece in the express from a think tank yesterday, not a left wing one more economically focused, predicting pretty poor outcome in the years ahead , mostly critical of the amount of spending/borrowing I think.
