Maybe it is about context - but that doesn’t take away from the fact it’s in really poor taste. I can’t say I’m offended but it’s not a joke that is relevant to me, and being outraged and calling for him to cancelled ends up being counter productive, as he’ll get an even bigger platform to whine about his ‘unjust’ treatment.
If this is the level he has to operate at to get laughs I’ll just give it a wide berth.
It's literally his whole act??

Have you never watched any?

I'm sure they all polled their constituents.

Sultana just loves to jump on a band wagon but a lot of the time it backfires.
Who said anything about polling constituents. If one of them contacted her and said he had offended their community it is her job to represent that…. It’s literally what she is paid for.

Yeah, sure.
100%.

It's a joke, my dad died from cancer and some jokes about cancer, dad's dying etc are hilarious. Some aren't.

Not really going to start writing to fucking MPs about it.

It just depends if you want to be offended about everything. It looks tiresome.

On Chubby Brown, this article has a few example jokes of his, the main problem is they aren’t funny in any way, just mean spirited:

I was dragged to one of his shows once not really knowing who he was, I don’t think I laughed once.

Hes a lot harder to defend. But really it would hinge on a claim what he’s doing isn’t comedy, and as bad as he is, I’m not sure you can credibly claim that. But even as a believe in absolute free speech, I’d find his broadcast or carrying by Netflix hard to defend.

so people think I'd better write to my MP about a joke I saw an out of context clip on Twitter about?

So you’re complaining about people choosing of their own free will to write to their MP about being offended/outraged whilst simultaneously defending the fact he should have the free will to make these kind of jokes in context…..

So you’re not a believer in absolute free speech then? Mean-spirited comedy is still comedy, surely?

So you think people wrote to those MPs to prompt their reactions and they weren't just jumping on a band wagon?

She's on every bandwagon going and often looks like a prick.

Surely people can tell the difference between a joke and actual hate speech?

People are free to write to their MP about whatever they want. The MPs job is to balance that as they’re literally responsible for creating the law. You saying “I’m offended” or even “this should be illegal” is fine, an MP saying “this should be illegal” when they’ve got the power to do that is different and relevant to their job.

Just read that article. Is that really his level of joke. 😳😱

Did you read what I wrote? I literally said the only way you could justify banning it is to claim it wasn’t an attempt at comedy but a genuine attempt to incite hatred and that doesn’t stack up.

Personally I don’t believe he should be banned. There’s still a feeling that networks should have decency standards of some sort which is different. But on balance I’d let it be a commercial decision, I still don’t think I’d want it banned.

She didn’t say anything about hate speech - just said the joke was grotesque.

I don’t think it is hate speech personally, just more an indictment of someone who has to ‘up the ante’ on unpleasant jokes just to get a laugh.

And how often do you see free speech advocates failing to defend the rights of someone to say something they disagree with?
Like, you're not a Muslim, so therefore I encourage any right thinking person to behad you, for example. Who wants that as free speech?

Sticking the cheeky edit in that this is all about free speech on the full-end philosophical level what I'm quoting, as it's gone back to comedy since this!

It's not upping the ante. Have you seen any of his shows?

I would say that falls under incitement to violence, I would, in fact did, say the same about Piers Corbyns rant a few weeks ago.

But that is, nonetheless, vetting and censoring what you can say. You're arbitrarily putting the limit somewhere, wherever you put it.

And let's face it, a number of free speech advocates (not all, I hasten to add) just parrot it as a mantra without fully understanding the consequence, as what they want is the right to spout whatever antagonistic racist, mysoginistic shit they think, with no comeback. Which is not the way to a functioning society.

None of the above is Jimmy Carr, however.

I think there are very few free speech advocates who don't have a line in the sand which they think shouldn't be crossed.
It also depends who's doing the spouting. Farage had had little comeback for his antisemitic rants compared to some people so it's often agenda driven.

MP’s are employed to represent their constituents. If their constituents who are from this group feel this is offensive it is actually their duty to say this.

An Mp said it who accused Jews of being Nazis 😂

Ill be Devils Advocate here. I’m not convinced incitement to violence should be illegal. Im open to being shown otherwise but I don’t believe you can remove someone’s agency like that. If I’m violent it’s my decision not because someone told me to do it.

Words at the end of the day are just words, and a comparatively tiny handful of morally disgusting behaviour is worth it in comparison to the alternative.

That doesn’t mean people can’t campaign against stuff or companies refuse to carry it, but government shouldn’t ban speech IMO.

Playing devil's advocate here. Does anyone think there should be any repercussions over this at all? Show edited to remove the joke? Show pulled? Jimmy Carr pulled from Netflix etc?

Just wondering.

I am guessing that if enough people kick up and cancel their subscriptions, Netflix will pull the programme.

Or will it all just die down? 🤷

There will be something else for a bandwagon for everybody to show how they are nicer than everybody else and care for the cause most.

he’s a smug twat but if you ban him and his type then that’s absurd

Jo Brand saying milkshake should be replaced by battery acid for Tory politicians was just as outrageous but Ian I suspect wasn’t complaining

A disclaimer should appear at the start saying "warning: this Jimmy Carr standup show contains Jimmy Carr doing standup"

I think if it gets people talking about prejudice against a community that most people don’t spend a second thinking about, and subsequently changes how people think and act towards them, then it’ll have been worth it to those kicking up a fuss. Regardless of what official repercussions there are (which will almost certainly be none).

Lol

Is there a history of systematic persecution, prejudice and genocide against Tory MPs?

They've been threads dedicated to gipsies over the years by certain posters on here.

So if someone actually threw acid over a Tory Mp that’s funny - wow

Also the MPs so outraged have made vile anti Jew references and they weren’t doing stand up
