I suppose it was a fair result. Saints were just a better side in the end. We seemed to suffer more from fatigue than they did: JCS was out on his feet for the final 15 minutes and their lad Broja had him on toast.

Sheaf and Gyokeres were immense. I wish Waghorn would turn out to be an alright signing, but I don't think he will.

It was particularly noticeable to me how we had far more decent shots than them. Seems like the story of the season for us, eh?

Penalties would have been fair.

Is Adam Armstrong actually a good player? He has done absolutely nothing for us and looks so poor every time he plays. Either confidence or just can't make it in the PL or maybe he will come good. At the moment he looks really poor, and now barely makes the bench in PL games.

He's one of those players that's a top championship player but cannot make the step up to the Premier League

I would've expected a promoted team to sign him not a well established Prem team like yourselves

Great for us in League 1. Decent in the championship but not really surprised he hasn't cut it in the top flight

Let’s be positive, I don’t think we had a poor player on the pitch and could have won this by two even three goals amongst the positives were Maatsan looked every bit an attacking acm, Hyam, Rose and JCS who played the last 10 minutes with what looked like a hamstring injury, we were good enough to show we can put a run of wins together, bit of a long shot but there’s a play-off spot up for grabs.
Maatsens volley was so unlucky

For us he didn’t look like he’d ever miss, one of the most clinical finishers I’ve seen for Coventry. Albeit at league one. Was convinced he was going to be a star. It may be a confidence thing - he had a blip for us and was non-existent but when he scored again he just went on a run again.

just hasn’t happened for him in the premier league.

I think he has all the attributes of a premier league striker. I thought he would have hit the ground running but maybe he needs to get this season under his belt and then kick on next year.

Fair enough about the song book. St Mary's really gets going though at times and usually a decent atmosphere. Some of the PL grounds are really poor atmospheres so St Mary's is pretty good in comparison to some - Arsenal is silent, Anfield is silent unless it's a big game, likewise Old Trafford. Chelsea was silent too and so was Man City. Tourists and prawn sandwich brigade. No problems with Cov at all, chatted to a few of you before the game. You guys have been through it, as have we in the past so good luck to you and hope you come up to the big time again soon.
You’re right mate. Lots of premier league grounds are soulless and that certainly wasn’t. You make a decent racket and I’m sure we do too. It was a good cup game with both teams well supported.

He was at his best for us running in behind. He rally just needs a high line defence and long through ball. His shirt game isn’t all that. I was surprised you paid so much for him but still think in the right system he’d score a lot of goals at any level.

All of your strikers are so different though it’s an odd recruitment policy.

Unfortunately a lot of regular home and away attendes missed out on tickets thanks to the rediculous rule of allowing two tickets per st holder which resulted in a load of day trippers getting tickets.
Our local pub landlord got a ticket from a ST holder. He hasnt been to a game all season. Role on the club bring in some proper allocation of tickets
I ended up paying 90 pound in corporate loads of city in there was great when we scored think stewards were surprised at how many

Recruitment policy is to buy up and coming young players - Adams, who has started to come good, has adapted more than Armstrong. Broja, he is class and will play for one of the top 4 in time I suspect. Armstrong scored loads on the championship last year and is young so we bought him. Salisu was rested and we missed him today. He is absolute class. Long and Walcott have had their day. Not much left in them now. I did think Coventry gave a very resolute defensive performance and thought it was heading for penalties, so it was a tough game.

That’s all of our policies. You sound like our friend from @Barnsley

Wrote this about him end of last season:

It's easy to pick fault in Armstrong's game though too, which I know seems crazy...

If you look at his goal tally vs his xG they are almost identical i.e. he scores about the same amount of goals as you'd expect from the chances he's had. Elite strikers typically slightly exceed their xG by converting some of the tougher opportunities.
Armstrong's goal tally is massively swayed by the sheer amount of shots he takes. He averaged an incredible record 4.7 shots per game in the Championship this season, smashing the previous record high of 3.9 but he takes a lot of long range, low quality shots. Is that him being selfish or because the team doesn't create enough? Either way, Blackburn rely on him too much - he scored 43% of all their goals & his chances alone made up 39% of their total xG!
He also missed 23 'Big Chances' which was the most in the league.

No doubt he's an exceptional player at this level, but these are the kind of things Premier League teams will be looking at to decide if he can make the transition.

Bournemouth (loan) written all over him

Something I'm surprised he's not tried before, especially against teams playing a high line.
To be fair, we've only just bought in another left wingback in the last 2-3 weeks, so there was no option to try Maatsen in midfield, until now.

It’s good to see that Sheaf is finally getting the recognition he deserves - we’ll be lucky to keep hold of him at this rate.
I’ve said it before, Sheaf was always good. Every player made mistakes - his mistakes were unluckily punished more often than the others last season

you can see now that’s not happening, he’s more confident and his ability and talent is starting to show. As much as he is a central figure to what we’ve done in the last 5 years, it’s madness to think Kelly is anywhere near as good as sheaf

The former is the past and the latter is hopefully the future.

Sheaf is our best midfielder, IMO. Your last sentence made me laugh out loud - it’s madness that even earlier this season some were going on about Kelly taking his place/first name on the teamsheet.

This is it though, it was genuinely a discussion. I Went to a game earlier in the season where Sheaf had done nothing wrong and the guy on the coach to anyone that would listen that we need to get rid, and that Kelly was twice the player he was.
