Every week I think it can't get worse and somehow it does. The lack of consistency from Villa fan Marriner was Sunday league.

Booking Sheaf for jumping over a tough tackle but letting Madine throw the ball away for time wasting at the end.

Just one yellow for Blackpool.

Three minutes added on at the end as well. How do you get to that conclusion?

I could go on. Since that Godden penalty we haven't really had anything.

Seriously doubt him being a Villa fan played a part, that rivalry is very one-sided.

It was more that he’s arrogant and refereed the game like it was beneath him. Barely left the centre circle all game, it was like he couldn’t be arsed to be there.

It was a tongue in cheek comment about Villa.

Dreadfully inconsistent. Gyokeres was having his shirt pulled numerous times. Booking Sheaf was a joke. How did Rose get away without a yellow when he blatantly pulled down someone breaking away? That was the only decision that went in our favour. Hamer thought he would try the same moments after and got booked!

I love Gyökeres' honestly, but he's got to make more of the shirt pulling every week. Possibly go down once in a while.

Let’s not forget that waste of space linesman. He may as well not been there. Abysmal.

I get home every week and wonder if I’m perhaps looking at things too objectively, through sky blue tinted glasses but I don’t think I am. How do they keep getting away with it?

The ref against Birmingham sending their man off was a rare good spot

The officials were awful and are generally shit the linesman on the East stand was absolutely shocking the ball went out at least 2 foot and he waved play on. Mariner look at him after and he indicated the whole ball never went out. Ridiculous that's only one of many terrible decisions. No penalty from the handball then gives a free kick for exactly the same thing in the middle of the pitch.

Neil Warnock was on Talksport recently ripping the poor quality of referees now in the premier didn’t catch it all but I think he mentioned Mariner as being useless. Needs a Warnock type we know he loves refs but the poor standards especially in the EFL need highlighting. It sometimes to me borderlines cheating.,

Looked like a stonewall penalty from where I sat but could be wrong also confused on why the foul on wag just outside the box wasn't carded...ref was shocking again

I feel he goes down too easily at other times which might count against him when they're genuine.

Nearly all players go down easily, Bowler spent more time falling over and lying down than doing anything else. The ref was poor not every challenge is a foul or a dive but that’s how they seem to ref now.

Andre Marriner told he's not fit to referee after "guessing" in Tottenham vs Chelsea
Andre Marriner took charge of Tottenham's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea and was bailed out by VAR on three occasions after a series of wrong decisions- Former top referee Keith Hackett claims Marriner is not quick enough to keep up with the pace of Premier League stars.

Think the above explains everything we need to know about this referee - last night he couldn’t keep up with the play and guessed decisions from afar, many of which he got wrong

I don’t generally criticise referees as it is a difficult enough job, but Mariner was shocking. His indecision and lack of clear signals made the players unsure what they were dealing with. At least 3 times in attacking situations City players didn’t know whether he was playing advantage or not, leading to stop/start confusion and lack of confidence that he was in control. The yellow on Hyam when he was slightly late (and the ball was clearly running out of play, so didn’t really impede the player) and the lack of yellow for the cynical foul on Waghorn on the edge of the box highlighted his inconsistency. His general demeanour and lack of game management indicated he couldn’t be arsed to be refereeing a lowly championship game between two mid table sides.
If that’s premier league standard refereeing then they are welcome to it.

I don’t normally berate refs I think most on here talk nonsense about them but he was one of the worst

that said the assistants were pointless they offered zero assistance at all

Very poor performance from a high ranking referee - was probably miffed that he had been assigned it and not the Fulham game

Yeah, every week it's 'the worst referee of the season' when the first decision that someone 100 yards away doesn't agree with. Major culture issue around football and refereeing at the moment. Referees aren't perfect, some make incorrect decisions, some make a 50/50 call the 'other' way. As someone above mentions, it's much easier to moan about how bad the referees are, that make very little impact on the end result, than face some of the actual realities as to why we aren't performing at certain levels.

The media are largely to blame. A TV game will have a 15 minute halftime segment dedicated to slowing down an incident and watching it 15 times in a marginal call, when they could actually analyse the game plan of either side or review some of the tactical analysis. Instead, it forces everyone on to the referee and has created a culture that they should be slaughtered for marginal calls.

My concern is that of late, is that Referees seem very quick to book our midfield! in the last 3/4 games or so. It feels like they are somehow trying to influence the outcome of games. Maybe I am being a bit cynical but since the Godden episode we have had an awful lot of bookings for what I consider very innocuous incidents that on TV the Refs are playing on with.
Nuff said though! Just fed up with other managers saying we are the best side they played in the Championship. Its about time we stuffed some teams and then listen to their manager as he packs his bags

That’s half of Gyoketes troubles he does go down too easily for the wrong things then because of that he doesn’t get the fouls when he really is fouled.

I tend to agree with most of your comments however I must say it is difficult to be objective when decisions are inconsistent.

Referee's are booking Hamer based on his reputation at times for tackles others don't.

It's the consistency that's the issue.

It's fine making mistakes but booking Sheaf that early isn't a mistake, that's a decision he's made because he thinks it was a dive. That should have set a precedent that should have meant a card for Madine throwing the ball away.

Marriner probably got dropped from the Prem list as a disciplinary penalty for his poor performances in that league. So we have to take the crap that he dishes out until he gets back into their good books.

I wonder if having VAR has made Prem refs less concerned about getting decisions right first time as they have the knowledge and backup of a 5th official who can bail them out on FUBAR decisions ?

Not necessarily. The decisions he got wrong tonight wouldn't have been checked for VAR, besides the handball shout.

It's all the little, inconsistent things that are the issue.

Probably because that arrogant bastard Marriner said he will make the decisions.

Agree - Lenihan (Blackburn) got a yellow for bringing down Keinan Davis (Forest) last night, for a very similar challenge (then sent off for a second yellow). I think a blatant scything down of a player (where there is no attempt to play the ball) should be a red (only a yellow if attempting to get the ball, and not dangerous) O'Hare got taken out twice in earlier home games by cynical tackles deserving of a red.
