I think better to come from him this season and will be a lot better next season once settled and with a full pre-season under his belt hopefully. Granted he has looked a bit rusty but it's good that we have actually signed a LWB so maybe in loan market next summer we can target areas higher up the pitch to add competition which is needed.

Not sure I buy the argument that he's rusty and needs another pre-season under his belt. He's played more minutes this season than most players in our squad - more than Rose, Allen and Kane, for example.

I thought he was very poor today and if thats our style of play we certainly need someone quicker and a lot better.. he looks devoid of confidence

Bidwell is playing how I'd expect josh reid to play if he came into the starting 11. Safe, pretty average but not really letting anyone down.

It’s early days still, he’s not played regularly for a while and he’s getting used to how we play. His record is impressive so I’m sure he’ll be an addition to the squad. I’ve said all this before.

However, the WB roles are massively important to how we play and he doesn’t look a natural WB to me. I appreciate today he was asked to watch Bowler, but he just offers nothing offensively with his positioning.

I said it before but I worry if him and Kane start as WB’s we lose all our dynamism for wide areas. We know the crossing game will be on point, but those roles need more than that.

Again, I’m sure he’ll come good, he’s massively experienced, but if we want to play on the front foot, attack teams and be creative then Maatsen has to start.

I think the third paragraph was especially evident today. Kane and Bidwell together means our ability to play through the wing backs, and push their full backs deeper is greatly reduced.

Appreciate Kane wasn’t great today but he can offer an attacking threat through this crossing. Not sure what Bidwells “thing” is yet.

But we need the ability of a Dabo or Maatsen to keeps some dynamism and variance for the opposition to think about.

Maatsen had a mare at LWB today. Bidwell played better before he came off

Both wing backs were very poor today, which goes a long way to explaining why we were so lacklustre. Kane apparently isn’t fit, I’m not sure what Bidwell’s excuse is.

Both full backs well off the pace, Bidwell needs to lose half a stone and Kane needs to go and get a colour blind eye test . We got pretty lucky today and we should have gone at them like we did at Peterborough away. Salter or Maatsen MOM for me, Reading were pretty decent 2nd half even with 10 but we made them look good. Too many errors today and the two goals were frustrating as I'm not sure Fadz would have done a better job but makes up for games when we have been outstanding and got nothing.

I think Maatsen and Dabo are our best wing backs but regardless of Bidwell and Kanes poor performances today it's nice to have 4 decent players and good competition, rather than relying on Kane/Dabo at LWB and the odd appearance from Dacosta.

I think writing Bidwell off at this point would be really silly but it’s definitely fair to say he’s not set the world alight so far.

I feel like Dabo is benefiting from not being in the team. He has qualities and is athletic but it was fairly unanimous at the time people wanted Kane to come in for him. People are forgetting that every single Dabo cross doesn’t beat the first man. I think Kane’s had probably his two poorest games in the last two, but is coming back to fitness and although his crossing has been a bit off last few games, there’s still been a few great deliveries that weren’t finished

I'm not writing Bidwell off until he gets a pre-season with the team. Jamie Allen went from 'get rid ASAP' to 'valuable squad player' over last summer.

That’s an impressive degree of patience.

Personally if we’re going to have to ship out six or seven players just to bring in one guy in January, I think it’s only fair to expect some kind of return from him before August.

The only thing I would say SBT is that around this time last season Gyo was seen as a complete failure. Sometimes patience pays off.

Gyokeres was a 22 year old who filled a position of need for us. What’s most baffling to me about the Bidwell signing is that even assuming he comes good, we don’t have a pressing need for another LWB right now - we have multiple other options there and he isn’t even the best one.

I’m not sure why we couldn’t just wait til the end of the season to sign him (especially if he supposedly needs a full pre-season just to get up to speed). Instead we blew our entire January budget on a rotational player who isn’t contributing anything right now.

Then another club may have nipped in... If that was the player they wanted (we've had no permanent LWB for 2 years & Reid is not training on), then you can see why they got him in Jan.

SBT got it. But not a good use of your time or my time to be writing off or defending a player who has made all of 3 appearances. And we certainly needed a LWB - it was the position on the pitch where we lacked cover.

Other clubs were in. By all accounts we had to offer an overly long contract to beat them.
