Saw it. If I got the gist of it he was saying that unlike in the Cold War the problem is that there’s been no longer term joined up thinking between administrations in numerous western countries and also no joined up thinking between the western countries so there’s been no sustained unilateral action ever been taken against Putin whether it was Georgia in 2008, his incursion into Crimea or anything. Basically said the west has been naive in thinking that they can control Putin enough with trade for him to be a normal person who doesn’t invade peaceful democratic countries.

Apparently in polling in Russia on the run up to this only 8% of Russians support military action by the Russian army in Ukraine and only 9% support the separatists in Ukraine. Putin might have misread the room catastrophically on this. Be interesting to see if the protests in Russia increase tonight.

I know it isn’t going to be as effective and they have alternate directions to go but if we really believe in the rule of law then we need to isolate them completely. No business with them at all, shut down every contact we have with them and take any pain that comes to our economy.

He says Banderites - a reference to World War Two anti-Soviet fighter Stepan Bandera - and so-called neo-Nazis "have put up heavy armaments including multiple rocket launch systems" in cities, including Kyiv and Kharkiv.
"Neo-Nazis" is a regularly used by President Putin to deride the Ukrainian government. Ukraine's President Zelensky, who is Jewish, has dismissed the term.
Putin says: "They are acting like terrorists across the world, shielding behind people in order to accuse Russia of causing casualties among the peaceful population.
"It is known for sure that all this is happening on recommendations from foreign consultants, American advisers above all."

"I am addressing Ukrainian armed forces servicemen once again: do not allow neo-Nazis and Banderites to use your children, your wives and the elderly as a human shield.

Russia just threatened finland and sweden if they tried to join nato.
Essentially Russia are trying to stop a nation joining nato ever again in the future by attacking any nation who shows intention to join, knowing nato will have it's hands tied and won't interfere with an attack on a nation that is not currently nato

Looks like the closure or airspace is planned, but not actually enforced yet.
Hilarious that anyone could call Aeroflot the “official carrier of Manchester United” with a straight face.
But clearly there needs to be a concerted effort to make sure that deals like this simply aren’t tolerated in future.

Problem is there is no absolute rule of law. Everyone considers their own self interest first rule of law second.
If there was a load of gas and oil in Ukraine they'd have been in EU and NATO years ago. Old argument for so many international conflicts but more than a ring of truth about it.
Those dragging their heels on the SWIFT exclusion are mainly doing so through self-interest.

Whole thing is bizarre.
Are very few NATO troops in Baltic States and Poland. Putin's actions are going to change that.
There are no significant ethnic Russian populations in Sweden or Finland so he needs a new angle there. Even he will find it a hard sell that Sweden is a threat to his people.
The concern still remains (NATO or not) is if he repeats his tactics in Crimea / Ukraine with the sizeable Russian populations in Estonia and Latvia. Or maybe Moldova is next on his list.

Apparently a Moldovan merchant ship has been attacked and hit by the Russian navy 12 miles of the Ukrainian coast. No one killed by the sound of it and possibly a mistake rather than a deliberate attack but it’s easy to see how this could escalate to neighbouring countries. As we seen in the Vietnam war era with Cambodia and Laos.

If I were Europe I would get those borders manned pretty sharpish. The USA will come into this just so they will be able to have a scrap. maybe a few mercenary Taliban would help as well...I saw the news conference with Angry Blonde Nikita earlier on. She's feisty....Says that its ok for the west to go into the middle east but not ok when Russia goes on walk-abouts. Said the British did Afghanistan, Iraq. Russia Today also had some guy in America talking much the same.
Maybe Europe is starting to feel how the Russians feel about the situation?
