how on earth is it embarrassing his whole point is that the Ukrainians are going to be on the offensive and be able to attack the Russian forces. They won’t. Every military expert says it’s going to be a formality by the end of the week that the Russians will have control of the capital and if they don’t then the shelling starts

The Russian aim will be to deploy a puppet government in the capital - will that be acceptable to the west on the promise of no movement to other countries. It well might be

Western foreign policy - in particular from the Us has been to continue to treat Russia as an enemy and a super power post Gorbachev- so from a Russian perspective the west have continued to punish and kick Russia around while indulging and cosying up to China

Sanctions will be used by Putin as an example again of western interference and suppression and will strengthen many of their resolve as will the isolation strategies

if the west agreed to that it would only be a matter of time before Putin was marching tanks into other countries, emboldened by what has happened in Ukraine.

It would be appeasement that would lead to much, much worse later on.

So in this settlement with Russia, what exactly should the west be offering Putin in return for de-escalation? (Bearing in mind you don’t think sanctions have any impact and you don’t think they should even be in place)

The more and more I read about it the more I am convinced that Russia are absolutely fucked and Putin has made a huge mistake.

The army is seemingly on the verge of collapse, with untrained troops, poorly maintained and/or old equipment, lack of food and fuel.

The economy is on the verge of collapse.

I wonder if Putin started to genuinely believe his propaganda machine and thought Ukraine would either welcome his army with open arms or would be so weak they'd be destroyed very quickly.

Either way, it was a huge mistake and I don't see any way that Russia can win this war and they will suffer the consequences for a long time.
