My gripe comes from the fact we never utilise the out of contract market much at all compared to other clubs.

There are always some solid players for this league knocking around that have expired yet we seem to spend a fee. Yes i know wages are usually high, but unless I'm being thick surely getting in 4 or 5 decent proven out of contract players is better than squirting money having a punt at the likes of Dacosta, Hillsner etc?

I mean look at these below that are out of contract this summer that could be achievable and improve us massively

Jed Wallace LWB
Alfie Mawson CB
Kristian Pedersen LB
Will Vaulks CM
Ben Osborn CM
Joe Rothwell CM
Harry Toffollo LWB
Tom Barkhuizen CAM
Yoann Barbet CB
Tom Lockyer CB
Reece Burke CB
Callum Elder LWB
Marlon Pack CM

And they're only the ones i think we could realistically get in wage wise, the list is 4 times longer

Our biggest mistake last window was was turning down Scott Twine and Jamie Paterson and taking a punt on the prick that is Bright, and a has been in Waghorn

Id wager if we had got them 2 in and not the latter we would be sitting pretty in the top 6

I’m guessing it will come down to wages. Agents will be pushing higher wages/longer contracts as no transfer fee involved, waghorn being a prime example. We got Bidwell in and Kane for nominal in similarish circumstances ie both nearing end of contracts. I’d imagine unless there’s a couple of player sales inc a big one that’ll be a the market we’re shopping in

He has had a couple of injuries this season, but on a free transfer (?) I think Tahith Chong, on loan at Blues, is a very interesting player. I would have thought he would be happier coming to play for us than at Blues (wages talk, though) Man U have confirmed he can leave.

Joe Rothwell zero chance. Pederson no and would be difficult to sign anyway. Jed Wallace isn't a wing back and again zero chance. Toffolo has a one-year extension at Huddersfield which will probably be triggered.

Alfie Mawson's injury history is poor and his wages still likely far out of reach.

Pretty sure Luton didn't sign Burke on a 1 year deal, nor Lockyer on a 2 year deal.

If Sheff U fail at promotion this season then I suspect Osborn will be given another deal as he's played quite a few games for them this season - I don't think he's much better than what we have anyway though. Have liked the look of Vaulks previously but again not really better than what we have.

I'd avoid Pack like the plague due to his age. He hasn't performed well this season either.

The only one I'd perhaps take a look at is Barkhuizen. Can't say I know much about Barbet and Elder.

Luton is an interesting one, if you look at Transfermrkt a lot of their players are allegedly out of contract this season, have they potentially had a 1 year crack at getting out of the division and spent money they potentially didn’t have?

I mean their wage bill is only slightly larger then ours

Barbet is very good, LCB, plays every available minute for QPR. Will sign a new deal there or go to a bigger/richer club.

Barkhuizen has had huge injury problems, only played 13 times & none since January.

re: Luton, I'd suspect those contracts are guesswork or contain extensions. They are always very coy about disclosing contract length.

Luton don’t announce the length of contracts for some reason, so I’d imagine it’s guesswork on behalf of TransferMarkt.

We have a certain brand of football so Robins will sign players with that in mind and probably already has a wish list. Wages this season will be interesting throughout the division lots of clubs in debt and saddled with high earners, I think a lot of wage bills will start levelling out and new contracts nowhere near what they have been.

I don't think Barkhuizen does have injury problems per say, I think he's just been horribly unlucky this season. That being said I still wouldn't be overly happy if we signed him.

Yeah as I've just said I'm fairly sure Luton don't disclose the contract lengths of their players.

We need better defenders - the problem is we are almost resigned to losing our star striker

I honestly can’t see clubs at premier level wanting Hamer but if a lower end club like I dunno Southampton expressed an interest then sell him and get some established championship centre halves.

We are never deviating from a back 3 and we need at least one if not two experienced centre halves at this level. You’d then have a pretty experienced back line and wing backs.

Where’s the bid swede on our side going then??

Agreed but on the experience thing, I think we'll likely sign younger up & comers. CBs who excel on the ball as well as having a lot of Championship experience will likely be very costly.
There's some very good young CBs in League One ready to step up, it's about getting the blend right.

With other Championship clubs fishing in these markets as well, prospects from League One will come at a pretty sizeable cost transfer fee-wise, which under the current operation is an area we'll always struggle to compete in.

I suspect we'll more likely look again to Premier League clubs and pick up unwanted young players - i.e. as we have done with Gyokeres, Sheaf, O'Hare, Dabo etc - as it's an area where we've probably found the most success.

We turned down Scott Twine? I hadn’t heard that before. He would have been great, what was our reason?

I would sign Wallace as a midfield partner to O’hare
