Why is it that you can get chucked out the commons for calling the PM a liar (which is a fact), but are allowed to say people on the opposite benches defend murderers and paedophiles and not get pulled up on it?

It's a disgrace, and I honestly don't know why the Labour party don't fight fire with fire.

It's obvious that parliamentary convention isn't being adhered to in any sense by the Conservative party, so why not start playing by the same rules?

Labour MPs should start calling out the obvious lies by Johnson and Patel, and call them what they are - liars.

They should then refuse to withdraw and also refuse to accept any suspension from Parliament. What could actually be done? I'm not sure there's any actual law that could compel them to leave or to be removed by force. Even if there was standing against it would draw attention to what's going on.

They need, right now, to highlight that government by 'convention' is broken because there is no objective legal process to punish MPs or Ministers who openly and obviously lie to parliament (and in effect, to us).

Until there is, it's time to stop playing the Tory's game where they can say whatever they like and the speaker just accepts it.

There's never been a greater need for a written constitution with legally enforceable standards for holding public office. Government by 'convention' doesn't work when the country is in the hands of the shameless and the corrupt.

Absolutely and in fact I think it needs to go further. All the opposition parties need to call it out and if that results in them being excluded so be it.

That speech from Patel takes the culture wars to another level and undermines democracy. First she says the Conservatives are the party of law and order. This is clearly not true. Their leader is the first ever Prime Minister to have been found to have broken the law whilst in office. Meanwhile they are openly proposing to break international law by reneging on the treaty that they agreed and was used as the basis for winning the last General Election. By their actions the Conservatives are showing they have no regard for law and order.

The comments about the opposition supporting murderers rapists etc are just disgraceful and have brought this country to a new low. Labour and the other parties have to make a stand on this now.

Fantasy stuff, but would be great to see every non-Tory member get themselves kicked out over the course of a day for calling the Tories liars. The image of just Tories left in the chamber would be something.

Would do bugger all long term, but a fun game to show how broken the rules are.

Is every asylum seeker one of those people?

Apparently Downing Street is now the most fined street in the whole of London. To put that in context it’s about 200mtrs long and only has 2 buildings that are residential. The longest street in London is 1.5 miles long and full of residential buildings. The entire population of Rotherhithe St are more responsible than the government.

That's disgusting. What did the Speaker do about it?

Massive change doesn’t happen in Parliament. It happens in the public. Parliament is always a step behind. Look at gay marriage, long hard campaign to change peoples minds at which point laws had to be changed.

Lot harder to do that with economics though. So you generally have to get elected on some broad strokes then make incremental steps. Thatcher is probably the best mode for large scale economic change, but it’s a lot easier to rip things down than build them up.
I agree, but for ll those that desire change there will be those that fiercely oppose it, and often do so more vociferously and loudly. This puts those in power off making change. in some instances the interests of the rich and powerful are protected due to pressure. Not to mention there are usually a large number of middle-aged people who will probably be a bit behind the times.

I agree economics is harder, in fact almost impossible, because as you say you can only do it incrementally because the changes will take time to either take effect or for people to get used to. But sometimes some measures will only work in conjunction with others so have to be done together, but can't be as it would be too much at once. If only one measure is implemented and then fails because of that it will therefore be off the table for some time and the adjoining measure is now not worth putting in place either. Plus a parliamentary cycle is so short in relation to the time needed you'd need many, many consecutive parliaments to make the wholesale changes required and it doesn't seem that parties left of centre are often afforded such time..

Could go after the billions of pounds in Covid relief fraud, or the billions of pounds in dodgy PPE supplied by their mates.

...Or you could ease the cost of living crisis by putting nearly 100k people out of work and fucking them and their families over.

Hmm, difficult choice.
No desire to do it or pressure on them when you have people like this in the media that embolden others to vote for them….

Austerity returns

It’s a good idea to make a few cuts to save money but cutting a load at the bottom saves a bit but cut some at the top end and you save a fortune let’s start there for a change, also let’s look to cut numbers in the Houses of Parliament and the House of Lords.

Wonder what has changed?
Considering it was possible to make an uplift a couple of years ago and subsequently reverse it.

Fuck sake. Why are these cunts so incapable of reading the room?

Major cost of living crisis, people are literally struggling to put food on the table and excuses/justifications include:

Can't increase benefits because 'computer says no'
Poor people just need to learn how to cook
Can't enforce a windfall tax on energy companies because they don't want us to

Even if any of those are true, even if that's what they think in private, don't say it out loud for fuck sake
