Most recent poll on this went 61% to keep the monarchy, 24% for an elected head of state and 15% don't know. Support for the monarchy was proportional with age, unsurprisingly. Will be interesting to see how that changes as and when Charles takes over
Or in an amazing series of unfortunate events king Andrew accedes to the throne

It won’t change as oddly the young oriole get older and decide it’s hardly a big issue

I saw a poll in either the Mail or the Express about who should be then next King - I’m not sure that’s how a monarchy works. 🤣🤣

When you consider the Dont knows are really don’t care other than under 24 every age group is massively pro the status quo

That’s the problem with being happy to shed your principles in a heartbeat - they come catching you up.

well when you are a chameleon that changes opinions and colours to suit the latest trend it’s always going to be a problem

How we select a head of state and what power they should have is hardly a big issue? If you're fine letting people have all this privilege and wealth by inheritance then fine but just be straight up about it.

Well most people either don’t care or are perfectly happy with it.

It's funny that such publications make noise about 'privileged/cosmopolitan/snobby elites' while also bowing down to the last relic of feudalism

its funny how some countries we are told are the happiest places to live in the world abs bastions of social democracy have a royal family

In this country with a class system on steroids it serves quite a different purpose

So what? Does it mean people who disagree should keep quiet?

No but I really don’t see why anyone would get so wound up by something that makes zero difference to their actual life - what’s it achieving - it doesn’t seem to making you happy

They should honour the Queen in the best possible way by winding it all up after she has gone.

Perhaps we should have a referendum on it. Where would labour stand on the issue?

It will hardly change - William is equally as popular

SBT out of touch with public opinion reality shocker
It’s more a case of SBT ahead of the curve. The popularity of the monarchy has been falling for years. Traditionally it sees an up turn in jubilee years. Not happened this year. The trend remains on a downward curve. It’s still above 50 % in favour but amongst younger adults the monarchy is about as popular as a fart at a funeral. Royalists are a dying breed and I can’t see the behaviour of Andrew and the Queen bailing him out garnering any favour with the more awake generations to reverse that. The monarchy isn’t going to survive another 70 years without a major reform.

So you arent actually opposed then - just in the country you live in

Well most of the time it's something I'm opposed to but it's not a pressing issue. Then we have events like this where it's all over the place and you are made to feel like some kind of Lord Haw Haw for disagreeing. Or we have cases where a member of the royal family is bailed out of committing crimes which he was only able to carry out thanks to his privilege. It isn't right.

As a matter of principle I just think a head of state should have to earn the position. The arguments in favour of the monarchy are for the most part sentimental and helped by the class system

So no president in the US have been bailed out for committing crimes?

I say fair play to the Queen for lasting on the throne for so long, but I'm mainly going to enjoy another day off work having a BBQ and a few beers

Hasn’t been for Boris Johnson. Flip flops constantly

im not actually joking but Boris Johnson doesn’t pretend to have long established principals and beliefs or even honesty

Starmer does and he has none does He?

There are at least checks and balances on the president along with a fixed term limit. Andrew only got close to Epstein because of his inherited position, and only got off with it because his mum used her inherited and taxpayer supported wealth to bail him out.

Do you think inheritance is the best way to choose a head of state?

I went to protest at the 2012 river show. We had secured a place that could hold thousands but the police only let in a few hundred despite the paperwork being done. No British media were there but plenty of foreign news outlets interviewing people.

As for this time around of course they put it in half term so no extra days off for the worship of Her Maj

How many protesters were they expecting that day? It was one of the worst days of June weather I can remember!

I shall be going to a street party and raising a glass for Liz. 70 years she's done a brilliant job. I wish she was my nan, love her to bits.

It shouldn’t be a political issue. It becomes one due to the issue of class and unearned privilege

That’s a meaningless cliche.

You are seriously saying there is no class and privilege in France vs some Scandavian countries

When you said Starmer was a man of principal the anti monarchists occupying this space laughed didn’t they?

Who knows - depends which focus group they speak to last.

If you are of the mind that worshipping a flag and a privileged family makes you a Patriot then that’s up to you.

Some people think that the idea of patriotism should be the notion that people are not left behind in your country.

I imagine a referendum on the monarchy would play out very similarly to the EU referendum, and what a time to be alive that was.

Well actually Leave voters are especially pro monarchy. Fine with unelected officials as head of state, not fine with them in the EU.

Well I don’t think it would be similar I think it would be an overwhelming victory for remain
