He was the only competent one among them.

Truss would be the best as she is as incompetent as Johnson but also unable to cover it up. They would fall apart really quickly.

Call me selfish, but I don't want another disaster appointment. I am quite the socialist in many ways, but I can't find myself wanting the Tories to fail even further in a new appointment, because that is going to be further damaging to the country.

I can't wish them to cock everything up further just so Labour get in.

I understand but under Truss I think it would be a very quick downfall.

Some of the others are really scary and potentially much worse than Johnson even.

I agree.

And I do want this government out as soon as humanly possible.

It's just such a mess at the moment and I feel that any new leader, no matter how bad they are, will be given at least a year in charge and I wonder just how much damage a bad un would do.

Agreed. Although also see where NW is coming from. The interesting thing will be how much was Boris haphazard spending commitments impacting Sunaks wider plans. By all accounts Sunak wanted all commitments to be funded by increase in taxes, was that because he didn’t believe they were good/best ways of spending public money..or he’s just fiscally tight ?? (probably a bit of both)

I’d hope that all contenders will set out their proper plans. It’s such a fine balance at the moment between trying to stem inflation and investing for growth. To try to reduce inflation pressure direct personal assistance might have to be parked (apart from those worst off) which won’t go down well in short term and not ideal if there could be an election soon.

I just want to see some innovative ideas and clear plans to get through what will be a tricky couple of years whoever’s in charge. My concern is they all just focus on pleasing their base

First innovative idea - stop obsessing over growth and focus on fairer distribution of the wealth that already exists.

Economic growth that only really occurs for a handful of already rich people makes the situation worse than no growth at all.

Have a listen to 'Any Questions' from today (BBC sounds).

It came from a Devon constituency (55% vote for the incumbent Tory MP, 51% in favour of Brexit).

It's brutal.

I live on a hill and looking out of my upper windows I can see the roofs of hundreds of houses and I always think about the amount of acres there that could be generating energy going to waste.

That's got to be the quickest 'I am not suitable for the Tory Leadership' role since, well, Steve Baker saying he was going to run.

With the Tories, and their flavour of Liberalism, it is customary for new political leaders to seek their political mandate, not from the party, but from the electorate, within a short timeframe.

He's just ruled it out in the very next line. The ass.

Trouble is he's very much someone who thinks everything should be run by private enterprise and given a profit incentive because it leads to better performance. Even though it's never proven to be the case.

So expect even more public stuff being privatised if he got in, and the NHS would be very much at risk, either outright or through more covert outsourcing to private 'partners'.
