My biggest gripe with Allen is he constantly turns his back on the opposition goal when receiving the ball in good positions.
Fair, and all the more frustrating when he's one of the few who can bridge the gap between midfield and attack, and run beyond the forwards. That being said, this season he's been better at that - maybe the system / Palmer suit him more?

Never said he was one of the clubs best players tbf .. I said he's worthy of his place and his performances have been good .. he's certainly good enough to be a championship squad player no doubt

Agree. And I think he'll drop back to the bench soon enough but he's made a decent contribution while he's been first choice.

Yeah totally. Handy backup for the first team. Nice and cheap and will do a job. But we’ve got people here who want to drop Sheaf or Palmer for him and that’s nuts.

You know what I want is the right balance that gets results , couldn't give a shit who starts if we get results .. full stop

Im saying we’ve had injury and suspicion issues in midfield and attack. With a fully fit squad he’s not in the starting XI.

I agree, see my last post.
But this all he does is run around a lot line is bollocks, he contributes more than that.

Same. And I don’t see what he adds to the balance. This has been my whole problem all along, I just don’t see what he brings to the team other than work rate. Can’t shoot, can’t beat a man, can’t pick a pass, can’t win the ball back, useless in the air. Just a blah player.

I'll say it again. This season, you would say Allen has been more effective than Sheaf. The only thing that keeps Sheaf in the team ahead of Allen on season's form is the need to change style / system if swapping them out.

And there were a couple of games last season where Robins did decide to do just that!

Robins made him captain against Blackburn too which people aren't mentioning , he clearly has a massive amount of respect and trust for Jamie allen these days

What does he contribute because literally every time I’ve asked this I’ve been given some variation on “runs around a lot” other than “he scored a tap in last game” but overall his goals and assists levels are poor for us.

Think he won a lot of respect for the I'll show him attitude he came back with after our first season up.

The other thing I would mention is that he clearly plays to instructions well .. you could argue he's doing exactly what Robins wants from him

Yeah I’m sure. He works hard and he keeps his shape. I’ve never denied that. I just like midfielders who can actually do something that involves a football. Otherwise we may as well have a team of West End actors who also work hard and take direction well.

I think that's very harsh mate but it is what it is

Well his running is important. And it's not aimless, he gets in good positions and offers an option when we're in possesion..
As I said,my biggest gripe is when he receives the ball in those positions he too often turns away from the opposition goal instead of driving towards it as Hamer does in similar situations.
as for goals and asssts, pretty much the whole teams numbers are poor, but two goals and an asisst recently issued decent though obviously that needs replicating over a larger number of games.

Running around a lot is an underrated contribution by a lot of people on here.

I do agree he's missing that nice first touch that COH, Sheaf, Hamer have but he's in the team for his engine.

Thing is, his technical ability is really not all that bad anyway!

Just personal preference isn’t it at the end of the day. Give me a classy but lazy fucker every day over an ineffective hard worker.

Robins is never going to play a player he considers lazy. Especially at this level.

Shouldn’t he do something with that engine though? His positioning is generally poor and he’s played past easily, and he rarely wins the ball back and most of the time when he gets into good positions he fluffs his lines (last two games excepted though he did it a couple of times there as well).

No I don't think it is really. I do agree with an earlier poster who mentioned his inability to drive at the opposition and his tendancy to play a safe pass backwards or sideways when on the attack.

But I just think he's playing within his limitations. Give it to one of the other lads to make the fancy pass.

He does do something with it. Forcing the opposition into hurrying and making errors.

Allen doesn't just run around a lot, he makes good intelligent runs into space. The goal Saturday was a direct result of that running.

I like this "Allen doesn't just run around a lot, the goal on Saturday was a direct result of him running around a lot" 😁

That's bollocks. His positioning is good, his problems start with what he does when receiving the ball in good positions, that's where his deficiencies lie.

It can't be nice having Gyokeres batter you all game and then the one time you manage to get away from him, you've got O'Hare and Allen giving you 0.1465 seconds on the ball.

In fact I feel a bit sorry for O'Hare and Allen when it's the Big Swede that always gets the reward!

His job is to ghost past the forward line and arrive in the penalty area, rather than be the one doing the driving forward - Martin Peters-lite. It's partly why Allen looks better when the team's playing better - they actually get him the ball now and again! It's also partly why he's looked better since our first season back - I actually didn't think he was bad *that* season either, but there were often times he was making space and people were unable to get him the ball. And he's never able to pick the game up by the scruff of the neck, although really only Hamer can do that in our current midfield (and Kelly, in different ways, but we'll probably never see that again).

He keeps the ball, keeps our shape, keeps our tempo ticking along, bridges midfield and attack, can actually shoot and pass long range if given the opportunity, but clearly he's not in the side for that.

I mean, nobody is saying he's Messi! But neither are our other midfielders. It's the pre-judging that annoys me really.

Watch him tonight. He does the Shipley thing of always being a bit too far to actually challenge or intercept and lots of pointing at others.

You watch the positions he takes between the lines, they're decent.
As for the Shipley thing, if he wasn't taking up the positions in the press Robins wanted him to he wouldn't be in the team.
How do people not realise this about Robins?
