We played almost all the games at home and were tournament favourites for most of it
In Russia?

As for 2021, I can’t honestly believe that a team playing 3ATB with Harry Maguire, plus a holding midfield of Declan Rice and some guy from Leeds was honestly the runaway favourite.

He lost to every fucking team that mattered , in every tournament

The Germans were diabolical in the last euros , and have been for about 4 years

People say GeRManY like they are good
Every England team ever have lost to the teams that mattered though.

We’ve never beat a winner in the knockouts if you take out our final win.

He’s right though. We were always backs to the wall and hanging on and today we dominated the game against arguably the best team in the world.
Disagree, we didn’t get spanked while Sven was in charge and got mugged twice by Portugal. Southgate gets us spanked by Hungary and it’s fine because it’s a friendly except UEFA don’t seem to think so. Neville has his own reasons for playing down that side.

Where he’s right though is that the competition now is not on the same level.

I'm a lifelong Coventry City fan of Scottish descent (lived in Coventry virtually all my life grew up in Hillfields ....but live in a village between Coventry & Rugby now)... Tbh honest I really do like to see England do well and (honestly) I was really hoping for a win against France, & to be fair in the second half I think England were by far the best side... I said to my my wife that Southgate needs to bring Grealish on to run at the useless France defender (,Itchyfanny ? Or similar) but true to style he gave him 60 seconds or thereabouts.... he's a very negative coach and it was noticeable post match that Foden got a slight pat on the shoulder but other England players got huge hugs?.. he's an incredible talent Foden but not used in his best position partly because Southgate is obsessed with playing a centre forward who plays every position bar the one he's supposed to which leaves Foden up shit creak without a paddle...no easy answers from every point of view but it's frustrating !!..the midfield three....Bellingham,phenomenal talent, Henderson hard grafter but past his best, Rice,I try to see why he's rated but so far I'm hugely unimpressed looks wooden to me the new Eric Deir... I get that he's a midfield "stopper" but think Kalvin Phillips is better and a much craftier dirty fucker in that role.
Anyway rant over and back to business PUSB.

Gah, this one is hard to take. Showed spirit but came up short yet again. Felt less of a surrender and more just unlucky to me.

I live across the road from an ex England youth manager who is still involved in the set up. It sounds to me there is a big focus through the youth teams about setting up in the England way ever since St George's Park was created bringing all England teams together at all levels since 2012. This seems to have shown signs of success but where it appears to fall down is players that come of age later struggle to integrate in to the groups that have been created over years and years. This seemingly makes Southgate more likely to fall back on someone who has been through the system vs someone talented who hasn't. As a side note he reckons Phil Foden is the most talented player he has worked with ever.

I agree with a lot of that, but think Rice has been really good for England. I have been very impressed with him.

Bottom line in all this is, we have played some good football, but would have been expected to top our group and would have been expected to beat Senegal.

We have merely got to the stage we were expected to get to. The quarter finals.

I thought we played well last night, but Southgate again made some wrong choices and Grealish and Rashford were brought on far too late, Grealish, ridiculously so.

Pep has praised him incredibly highly too. He hasn't had a great tournament, but is a fabulous little player.

You can see its in there but seems a bit more comfortable playing as an impact player at the moment in my opinion. Really interesting times ahead though. Also less of a talisman tournament with focus spread across the team. Really like that as it spreads pressure.

Woke up and still gutted.

Genuinely feels like we are on the cusp of being a great team but it feels like there’s just ‘something’ missing.

Southgate has done a great job in making us a team again but he’s just a little too defensive in my opinion.

We have that much quality going forward we should be playing to those strengths rather than covering up our weakness at the back.

I think it’s time for him to go, with his head held high, and bring someone in who will be willing to take a bit more of a risk.

Still got another major tournament before his contract is up - he may want one more throw of the dice. He absolutely has to add some ruthlessness for it though.

Also woke up gutted.

Neville mentioned going out to France with a decent performance was par a few weeks ago and that’s probably how I feel this morning.

We played well but at the same time how many decent chances outside the penalties did we create? We’re a good team not a great one.

On Southgate I wouldn’t be against a change but who with? No English option that I can see and not convinced on Poch. Think Jose is just too toxic now; Tuchel maybe?

We have good young players in Saka, Foden, Bellingham but with an aging Kane are we a top striker short of winning a big tournament regardless of the manager.

Have enjoyed our games this tournament too.

Southgate is very good at setting the team up, but hasn't got a clue how to manage a game or change a game.

The Sterling sub last night just summed it up.

He's done some great things for England, but time for someone else to have a go now.

He should probably have gone after the Euros - England were at home in the final and probably had around 85-90% of the stadium supporting them and booing the opposition throughout the game. If they couldn't win a final in those conditions, you wonder if it's ever going to happen.

Morocco have beaten more top nations this tournament alone than Gareth has in all tournaments in his tenure .

This is why it's depressing

There's been no success by our Gareth I'm afraid , he's not done a magnificent job .

The beautiful game. Our problem seemed to be putting the ball in the net in open play. France stopped that. Ref was poor. France didn’t need penaltie

Just wondering if our manager fancies it?

Kane is 29, Giroud is 36!

This defeat is less gutting than the Euros. But it hurts because we never scored in open play and Southgate seemed to think we were good enough to play on without making changes early enough. The 2nd pen was like watching City. Knowing that he would miss. it tough on Kane of course. All the more frustrating given that we needed to score the chances we made.

Giroud being Frances all time top scorer shows you how much the games changed, about a million levels below Tierry Henry .

England were crying out for Grealish or even the mystery man Maddison and he brought on Mount. He should have put a player who can run with the ball near to Greizman as he was one foul away from going off even with that ref
