So, it's a usual Wilson Out thread (he just scares me whenever the ball comes near him, and he can't get it away from himself in the direction he means to!), but with a twist...

How many keepers have actually looked *that* convincing against us? Foderingham managed to drop a cross when completely unchallenged, an error that if Wilson had mae would have had him ousted by us all... and quite rightly. Palmer(?) didn't look stunning for West Brom either, if honest.

Is looking for a solid error free keeper at this level looking for as mythical a beast as the 20 league goal a season striker? That once in a lifetime elixir when otherwise you're picking up fools gold time and time again?

Do we have to accept a mildly adequate-to-rubbish keeper is the best we can hope for?

For me it's his kicking and when the ball get passed back to him that scares me.

He rightly came into the team after Moores howlers, and it was difficult to make a case to drop him when we had kept so many cleansheets. However we're now conceding regularly and he should have done better with a number of them and his kicking puts us under pressure. Moore should come back in for him.

But like you say most keepers in this league have the odd error in them. But I do think we can do better than Wilson.

Maybe I have selective memory but whilst not looking a world-beater Moore was solid last year, a noticeable upgrade on Marosi and Burge.

I know he dropped a couple of clangers early this season but feels a bit harsh to write him off

I just don't rate Moore either. I'd thought it was post Covid that had made him flakier than when he started and, tbf, it might be. But he was flaky a long time before he was dropped too, and seems to have certain areas around him which are suspiciously easy to score against him.

Feel like I should tag @Alkhen after his reply given it's such an opposed view of Moore to mine :D

Wilson is shit so god help the other three if they aren’t better, he wouldn’t get in any other side in the league and most in league one.

He is a disaster waiting to happen.

I just don't see much value out there. Could take a gamble on a keeper going ok lower down the pyramid or take a highly rated youngster but I have to agree with the op, standard of champ keepers in general has been poor.

I would give Moore another go soon. His errors came from coming for the ball when there was no need. Surely you can coach that out

We defo need a new keeper, 2 centre half's, at least 1 wingback, an attacking midfielder and a striker in Jan.
We can offload kane, Allen, Walker, Kelly and Waghorn if there's any takers.

I think Moore will be back in for Wrexham and then probably have a run in the team. Hope so anyway as Wilson scares me.

Something went wrong with Moore last season ,not just the start to this one?

I have a crap memory so you are probably right. He did play 41 games so Robins stuck with him. I definitely remember rave reviews to begin with. Surely he can't be a total right off?

It seems there are few 98% consistent keepers about ,so many have major weaknesses, taking crosses, distribution, kicking.
Not sure where clubs look.
Moore isn't any better than Wilson.

I couldn’t disagree with this statement more if I tried. He had a shocking few games and was rightfully dropped earlier in the season but to equate them is so wrong. Look at their careers. Look at the fact Moore can kick a football. Look at the fact Moore can step off his line and can catch a ball. Robins is going through one of his stubborn phases with Moore and it’s costing us.

In short, yes.

Have said this before but there's probably only a couple of top quality (first choice) keepers in the league & then only a couple of really poor ones.
Everyone else is kinda similar for me albeit with different strengths & weaknesses.

On his day Moore is fine for me, decent under crosses & excellent distribution. He has some technical weaknesses, but nothing too worrying.
The problem is he seems to have some pretty major confidence/concentration issues which inevitably end up gifting goals.

It’s not stellar, but it sure is hell is waaaaay more established than a guy who’s second most appearances after us is 17 for Telford

Well they both enjoyed three years of being reserves at Cardiff at the same time!

I mean, Wilson's ain't stunning, for sure. And a previous track record isn't necessarily one to write someone off over, but Moore's is not one to hold up as an example, either.

Not sure the point you are trying to make. I’m not saying he’s Peter Schmeichel. But unquestionably his career is significantly better than Wilson’s. Struggling with why or what you are arguing to be honest.

Any team with ambition would be in for another keeper in Jan but we'll be stuck with them both.

Wilson's distribution is a big problem. Vik makes some brilliant runs in behind but Ben knows he hasn't got the ability to pick him out. Happens too often. Giving the ball away as often as he does is an issue too.

He's really poor from crosses and even with the first goal today, he came out too slowly and didn't make himself big enough.

I think there's more to the Moore situation than it seems. I think he's shot of confidence from it and Robins knows the pressure will be on him if he brings him in.

I actually think Cardiff is a good opportunity to have a go with Moore. Unlike previous games, Wilson isn't on the back of a run of clean sheets. He's conceded 7 goals already since the WC break.

I don't think it is. They've both been nonentity reserves who've never held down a place at this level until us.

I would go after the Huddersfield keeper and his contract may be up in the summer.

Wilson is rubbish, and Moore is the better keeper, but Moore was utterly abysmal at the start of the season and Wilson hasn't done anything anywhere near that bad to deserve to be dropped.

Given our lack of squad depth and with injuries we have numerous priorities to look at before we even think of getting in a new keeper - CB (possibly x2), LWB, AM (if O'Hare is injured long term), possibly CF (depending on Godden and Walker injuries).

What are the strong points in Wilson's game?

Shot stopping. He makes some genuinely good saves but his decision making and distribution can be suspect.

There was a real sliding doors moment in the Preston game; Wilson came charging out and took out their attacker. Stonewall red card, Moore even started to get changed iirc. Somehow the ref decided it was only a yellow card and Wilson stayed in the team thereafter.

I'd be fine sticking with Wilson and Moore for the rest of the season. Just can't see much of a guaranteed upgrade being available in January. Not saying we shouldn't look in the summer though, there must be some options coming out of contract.

We need to sort CB more and with O'Hare potentially out we need cover there.

A bit like we have done with Burroughs… he’s got the shirt cause Dabo, Eccles, Kane have been either injured or just not upto standard. Is it time to give one of the younger lads a chance?
Only Robins and the GK coach will know the answer to that question seeing them in training and how they perform.
Id be more than happy to see Moore given another go but I’m completely over Wilson so it’s either
A) bring in a keeper in Jan
B) Give more a shot again
C) try one of the younger lads

I’m sure I’m using confirmation bias, so I want to try and be as fair as possible. At a guess I probably go to 75-80% of all games, and I honestly can’t recall a single save he’s made that I wouldn’t expect him to make. I wasn’t at West Brom away when he saved a penalty, so that’s one, but which am I missing/being unfair on?

Ref clearly decided it was more punishment to the team if he stayed on.

Just watched the goals awful defending terrible penalty he should never take another one and Wilson rooted to his line like he always is time for him to get dropped doesn't fill me with confidence. Fadz is a massive loss for us.
