I'd have him on a loan or a free, but if he's going to cost I'd sooner put the money towards a younger player.

There’s some characters on here.

Suggesting we pay £400k plus then decent wages to a 31 year old who is out of favour.

When, in living memory, has CCFC paying a decent fee for a 31 year old worked out well?

I’ll wait.

I thought the plan was buy low, develop and sell high. Fair enough if it isn’t
It was certainly Ray Ransons plan… and for many years in the lower leagues. But I’m not sure we can do it in the Championship.

Bad attitude, nearing retirement, lightweight and costing us most of our budget. What can go wrong?

Decent player but given the fact that (realistically) the play offs are unlikely this season at 31 he doesn't fit the club's recruitment profile ( as often stated by M.R.)..free transfer yes short term contract, transfer fee? not wise imo.
Not that it's relevant but he's Coventry born but he's a Liverpool fan.
A plassie??? That’s done it for me….I’m out

Struggling there…Did we pay a fee for Don Hutchinson? … he was older that 31. I thought he was decent but probably on a free.

I raise you Gary McAllister - 31 first time round at a cost of 3 million

Really surprised at some of the backlash. £400k really is quite trivial, especially when MR notes we can do something (paraphrasing) this window, so we have “something” available.

He is an experienced Championship player, capable of being a match winner and extra motivated as he’s a Cov kid and fan.

Attitude stuff isn’t fair or accurate.

But as it stands, there’s still nothing more than expressions of interest from both sides.

Same for another we’ve been linked with too.
“£400k is quite trivial”

Then let’s say we give Paterson £8k week plus add ons (tax, med. ins, whatever) call it £10k cost, contract for 18 months; what’s that, well over £1m plus spend over 18 months?

We could have a recruitment department of 10 people minimum working full time with bods in Eire, Scotland, C Europe / wherever and pay for their WiFi, bus tickets and chewing gum and still have change. Recently, we’ve been signing people like Kasta and Jobello off YouTube. See how it works?

It’s not just £400k, it’s over a million on a player who will never improve and will never command a fee in future.

Mania.

So then what should be the plan? Because we certainly can’t afford many 7 figure fees-is it to buy 30+ year old cast offs?

Cautious as ever, but bottom line I think it’d be a good signing for us. Not into this ‘he’s turned us down x times’ thing. Always go to the best offer.

Wonder if there similar threads when we signed Fadz?
A free transfer signed for a different position in a different division. Not a great comparison.

We have G on here who is first in the queue to criticise Palmer as a waste of funds. Now we have him saying it's fine to spend a 6 figure fee on someone older and also not wanted by their current club after some indifferent form.

We're in the twilight zone

No one knows what the fee is and what it’s for - could be a buy out on his contract

Palmer will be costing £1.5m in wages and some kind of fee - neither will have resale value

It’s academic what the fee is “for” - £400k before wages is a substantial fee for a club with a catastrophic cash flow situation to be paying.

it really isn’t and king will have had to offer some assurances on funding the club for the season

It’s different coffee.

A 30 year plus keeper or non-nonsense centre back or midfield general needs different attributes to wide or central players.

There might be a statto on here that will prove me wrong but Fadz / M Doyle played generally in a central zone where sprinting and acceleration are secondary to positioning and being able to preempt play. Someone mentioned MacAllister earlier - perfect example - sit deep and don’t move much. Guile and craft not physicality.

Waghorn, Beavon, McSheff (2nd spell) were wide / front players where if your legs have gone you are less effective.

Paterson.

No.

Melt down when we sign a player, melt down when we don't sign a player, melt down when we spend money, melt down when we don't spend money. This forum is comedy gold at times.

Concerning though as they probably have a negative mindset in real life too. Not good for them or their kids etc

Ok that was a bit deep lol
