Transfer Rumour Luke McNally (14 Viewers)

I’m a little confused as to how we are absolutely tearing apart all our centre backs yet we have the joint most clean sheets in the league. Yes, it doesn’t mean all the back 5 have been outstanding every game, but they’ve limited opposition players to very few (especially quality) shots on target all season. They also have to contend with defending every ball from every set piece to alleviate responsibility from Wilson as he’s incapable of leaving his line. Fadz’ leadership is a massive part of that, but we have some serious recency bias going on here as Doyle & Rose especially have been more than fine for the majority of the season. Against Burnley, top of the league, we defended really well for almost the entire game with Doyle and Rose. The Wrexham game was an absolute embarrassment and they all deserve to be slaughtered for that, and yes Norwich wasn’t great but they are a very, very good side who also put 4 past Preston at Deepdale (also joint most clean sheets).

I’d make Norwich faves for play offs personally and wasn’t too shocked that Saturday went how it did - If they’d have swapped managers earlier they may well have had a decent run at Sheff U and Burnley

The manager and most of the squad have all got out of this division before,

McFadzean has been the fulcrum this season but he can be fairly erratic himself. That we’ve been so reliant on a 35 year old journeyman is a symptom of our defensive vulnerability.

That period when we weren’t conceding goals was pretty mystifying, we made daft defensive errors in virtually every game.

He can be, but he’s a leader in a group that when you look at it without him, doesn’t have one. That and what he does for Doyle and Panzo especially. They look worse for his absence

McNally is probably going to need a month to get match fit having played 2 min of league football this season. Fadz will be back by the time he's up to speed. Hopefully we have an option to buy at the end of the season.

Thought Rose had been playing ok before the Wrexham game.
As for Doyle, he is a very good footballer. Great on the ball and a very good size, which he will learn how to use over time. However, his acceleration is fairly poor. Gets turned way too easily and then can’t recover. Couldn’t handle Pukki on sat. That being said, I’d have him back on loan next year if possible. Don’t think a top-end championship side would take him so it may be on the cards.
Question Man City’s coaching staff will be asking themselves is will he in the next 12/24 months be pushing for a squad place in the first team? If not, then does go back out on loan for a further year to develop or decide to sell/release him?

There’s a good player there but I don’t think enough to break into one of the worlds best squads even in a year or two personally. Big achievement that!

After your around the 21 age and not banging the door you see a lot of clubs move them on. Remember O’hare with Villa?

Has he not been playing for the u/21s regularly then? Or is the wrong thread.

You improve him as much as you think you can then sell to the highest bidder

Agreed. But that’s also the problem. He’s also been injured/suspended every year since he came to us. Building so much around him is not exactly sustainable.

Three CBs, at least one who can replace Fadz’s leadership, ideally two has to be priority one for the summer. And I’m sure it is. Hyam was also very vocal I believe so we’ve lost that too, isn’t he captain at Blackburn?

Not sure if the rules but isn’t there a limit as to how many players clubs can have out on loan.

I think starting by being hard to beat is where we need to focus our efforts. Good defenders and keepers are probably easier to recruit and cheaper too.

He has been a few times when the main captain is injured.

And plays the Fadz role in the middle when they play a back 3.

Really weird how some people say we don't miss him.

Was never his biggest fan, but clearly he’s a talker if he’s even temp captain in his first season. Had aggression as well. All things we are desperately lacking right now. As with Shipley the assumption was we’d replace and we haven’t.

Marosi was a pretty good find in League 1, until getting his face smashed turned him into a crossophobe
If that hadn't happened I think he'd still be here as an average Championship goalie. Was certainly a lot better than Wilson and ok with his feet too.

After we'd lost 4-0 at Rotherham back in L1, half (or more) of this forum were crucifying Fadz on here, and for quite a while, saying he was past it. 3 seasons later and we can't do without him. Football fans!

Yes Fadz didn't actually start that well for us. It wasn't only the Rotherham game but he was at the centre of a lot of errors initially. Looking back now, this was to be expected as it was his signing that led us to start playing it out from the back, even in tight situations, and obviously such a dramatic change (particularly in league 1) required a bedding in period where we needed his experience to ride the odd error, without it ruining his confidence. His signing turned out to be a masterstroke of course, and his leadership is not easily replicated.

I suspect we've made a very good signing here
I'm surprised Burnley have let him go as Oxford drove a hard bargain when McNally left in close season
I like the fact that he seems to have an aerial presence, and is an attacking threat too.

Very happy if this comes off. Good in the air, decent bringing the ball out (though probably won’t see that until Fadz is back), should be good defensively, not a Prem kid who’s never played a proper game.

In isolation, all good, and certainly the type of loan / signing we should be looking to make. Am still scared we could end up with him, Doyle and Panzo though, which doesn't have much in the way of experience if it all goes wrong during a game! He's played less league games than Doyle, after all.

Hardly a journeyman

Depends how they feel after promotion

If he has a stormer he’ll likely get sold to the hugest bidder or kept and loaned out for another season. If he doesn’t, do we want him? We had this with JCS and Osti recently.

We also had this with Vik, too - for balance. Didn't work out so badly!

Not sure Id call Viks loan “having a stormer”. But that’s the ideal, crap in public but shows enough in training for us to think we’ve got a gem. Kompany seems to rate him TBF just not enough to start.

I think he's probably about 6th or 7th choice CB there now.

He was 4th or 5th choice and they've just signed two centre backs in this window for about £5m

That was my point -- Vik was so, so during his loan, but we obviously saw enough to think we could develop him. As you say, that's the ideal, as if McNally plays like Bobby Moore for the duration, we won't get a sniff.

Apart from we actually need him to play well in this loan spell, as otherwise we continue to have no defence.

Yeah but he’s young and if I were them I’d keep hold and see if he either develops next season where they can sell for more with two years left still or they get relegated and want to make use of him.
