They'll say we can't have another unelected leader, there would need to be an election...unless it's Johnson. In their eyes that would be perfectly valid.

Who is “they”? There’s no way the Tories are calling an election without being forced.

That's what I mean, they (Tories) obviously don't want an election so if Sunak needs to be replaced (tax scandal or whatever) then to avoid an election they'll say give it to Johnson again and no election is needed.

Or they’ll just do what they did the last four times and say “you vote for a party not a PM”

Absolutely cuntish opinion which many people agree with probably on here too. Wankers

Wouldn't be surprised if he's responsible for at least a couple of dozen of them disappearing. Total wrong un.
When he's out of a job after the next election they can't let him back working in a school, not with that attitude to children's welfare.

He's been carving out a place at GB News, based on how often he goes on there and kisses Farage's arse. If he ever went back into teaching he'd be reported as a safeguarding concern on day one.

I like that they force unions to vote by post and hit 50% turnout to go out on strike, but their tiny number of members gets to choose the PM every few years.

Genuine question. What would you do otherwise, if not force a GE upon leader change?
I think there should be an election when the leader changes, on principle. There definitely should be when it changes twice in a year. Otherwise you are effectively handing the privilege of choosing the PM to the Labour or Conservative party membership, neither of which are even close to reflecting mainstream public opinion.

The original PM won their mandate at a national election, I don't see why someone arriving half way through should simply have to appeal to the far right or left in their parties.

It’s a fundamental rewrite of the way we do government though. We don’t have a President, we have a Parliament and anyone who can command a majority in that parliament is the Prime Minister.

Go back to the MPs electing their party's leader and it becomes more directly democratic, as they're then doing what they've been put there to do by the electorate.

Unlike the members.

As has been said, it's technically the party that get voted in, not the PM.

However, those votes will have been done on the manifesto provided at the GE, so if a new PM is to take over it should be that they have to retain that manifesto for the remainder of that term.

That was the big issue with Truss. She went so far off message that the GE votes became meaningless and as if it was a completely different party.

I think having the MP's vote for it rather than the members is 'fairer' as at least the MP's can argue they have public support having won their seats. Plus I suppose they should have the public in mind to some degree as they will have to think about public reaction and the chances of re-election next time, whereas members could (and did) choose an absolute nutcase based on their owned warped ideals. But it seems that there's plenty of those within the MP's too.

Controversial. I’m inclined to agree. It is after all about who can command a majority in the commons and needn’t be the party leader.

It’s not even the party. We elect MPs, they decide who they will follow. Nothing stopping a bunch of Tories getting together and following Jeremy Corbyn if that’s what they want (good luck keeping their membership/whip tho)

We elect the members to make decisions on our behalf, that also includes who leads them.

I don't particularly have a problem with the leader changing without an election after because, as said, we elect parties and representatives rather than the leader. It does of course destroy credibility if the leader keeps changing, but that should mean policy stalls and they don't get elected next time.

Sultana making herself look silly again.

Who the fuck votes for her?
What's she done? Only things I've seen recently are the meals for school kids bill she put to parliament and supporting the Amazon workers on strike

As for who votes for her my Mum is a Daily Mail reading, Thatcher loving, lifelong Conservative voter. She thinks Sultana is the best MP she's ever had and fully intends to vote for her

Pretty sure this is on the basis that she never saw any of the previous MPs the entire time they were representing her but Sultana goes door knocking in her constituency regularly to ask if there is anything you need

Only thing I can see people getting angry on line for her is her speaking out in parliament yesterday about 200 children missing from immigration hotels.

Sounds like the Zahawi soap opera is about to take another twist. A paper trail seems to confirm that the Financial Times had a FOI request in last June that 5 Tory MP’s including Zahawi were under investigation. There’s also a suggestion that Sunak was made aware of FOI and who it concerned while he was chancellor. The suggestion that this has all come as a shock to him now seems unlikely.

His timeline is all over the place based on statements he's been making since last July.

Said something about Amazon and pay rises that didn't actually add up.

Didn't it? the person who said it didn't is a right wing troll who posts notes on lot's of things that are basically nonsense and even if that is the case the stats were actually someone elses

Mate you need to lay off the LBC/Talk TV sound bites.
Maths is definitely not their strong point, they claim to be the voice of the people in the UK, and proportionally fuck all people listen to them.

I’m starting to wonder if you may be Colin from Portsmouth.
