Why? Palmer wins the ball more than Allen. He’s been asked to play just off Vik but he can easily play CM.
It's about ground covered and defensive positions and covering. Palmer might win more tackles but they are usually in the wrong areas, for example he will run like a mad man to tackle someone on the touchline, but yet when the other team have some possession, he is stood on the half way line leaving the midfield exposed. Professional football is more about denying space and covering passing lines than it is about individual tackles.

The one game we played Palmer, Hamer and sheaf as a middle 3 with 2 up top- Waghorn and Gyokeres. Hamer and sheaf were completely over run.

You might be able to get away with it against a team that bypass midfield and play long ball, or an inferior side you'd expect to have the majority of possession against. But I'm with you, he just doesn't have the defensive awareness in his game to play CM. That's not to say he can't or won't tackle when the ball is there to be won, but there's a big difference between pressuring a man near you in possession, and having the awareness to track a runner 35 metres backwards to stop him having a free run at your own box. It's that side of his game that is missing.

And for all the good things he does in possession, does that outweight the negatives of overloading 2 of our best players in Sheaf and Hamer and neutralising their own strengths?

Wonder if that is an injury to Panzo or just Robins throwing Luton off the scent? Robins was pretty clear neither Fadz or Rose were ready yet in his interview.

I’m disappointed palmers dropped with a player like Allen. It’s not all about running around it’s about what you do with the ball. Im be very disappointed if I was palmer.
Maybe wait and see how the game plays out first

Would imagine he's taken a knock in training or something. Although equally Robins has always been very coy on injuries and how ready players are

Have to wonder if Kelly's played his last game for us now, not in the squad today and probably behind Eccles for a spot at CM now

Just worry you’ve got nothing to link midfield and attack there. I’m not sure when playing five defensive midfielders became necessary to not be overrun in midfield.

Great to have Godden and Fadz back in the starting 11; I just hope that Godden won’t be deployed in that strange role he had before the injury, as it ensured he was anonymous and posed very little threat in the box.

It’ll be interesting to see how Wilson-Esbrand performs at LWB, hopefully he’s got the legs for it.

2-1 win, hopefully. We need a lot of performers today. PUSB. ⚽️

That pretty much relies on Hamer doing the work of 2 or 3 players while also moving us up the pitch.

I guess he’s used to it by now it happens every club he goes to

Perhaps MR is going to try and use Godden as the link, like earlier in the season. Which, for me, just didn’t work effectively.

Then we’re back to the problem of having one man up front who goes walkabout. I get that Robins is a very defensive manager but I’d just like to see us take the handbrake off at home from time to time. Still three points today and I won’t be moaning.

Makes me laugh. “Robins clearly has his favourites”

…so do fans, obviously.

the notion palmer could start in a midfield 3 and would even be considered by the management is funny

last 20 needing to push on maybe but starting a game against a team like Luton not a chance

So we play someone who has no impact whatsoever? Allen’s only half decent attribute is running into space when we attack and even then he fluffs his lines more often than not. He’s never pressuring his man and never wins the ball in the middle. I’d rather Eccles it Kelly in there if you desperately want five defensive players in midfield.

he’s always pressing and harassing the opposition

Palmer doesn’t move enough and leaves us horribly exposed when we are defending off the ball - as I say there’s an argument to bring him on with 20 - 25 to go and let’s be honest that’s pretty much his career in a nutshell
