I’m not saying any of that. 80% of revenue coming from 20% of customer doesn’t = they target problem gamblers and most revenue comes from problem gamblers.

Yep and they’re businesses. There’s a difference and admittedly fine line between that and actively encouraging problem gambling and targeting problem gamblers.

Is there though? It’s basic data science methods to find customer propensity and discourage churn. Same at every business I’ve worked at be it Retail or SaaS or whatever. No issue when you’re selling bed sheets but gambling is a bit different. It’s not like there’s specialist algos used in gambling sites from any other data science department.

Oh really? I'm just going off personal experience, empirical evidence, and good old fashioned psychology.

There are risk models used which identify increased frequency, time spent, stakes, deposits. These can results in marketing hold out, credit checks, and account suspension.

If a customer doesn’t hit the risk model then a churn model would pick them up.

Very stringent regulation around the circumstances of repossession. Banks/Building Societies would need to evidence that they have robust processes in place to identify those who may be struggling, engage with them and look to help them manage their repayments. Repossession is the absolute last resort. If they fell down on any of this they’d be ripe for litigation.

Why do we have to have this debate every time? Gambling can lead to addiction, and addiction may lead to mental health issues, destruction of lives, debt, and - ultimately - suicide.

It is well documented that gambling companies take advantage of people with addictions, targeting them. This is not a secret. It is widely accepted that they target problem gamblers. The industry has even tried to influence the government white paper by, basically, bribing government officials.

It's a multi-billion pound industry, they don't need protecting on a football forum. Some of the stuff on here is pathetic.

They don't tend to lend to people who can't afford it, whereas gambling companies target people regardless of affordability and say "fuck you" if you don't win.

The equivalent lenders to gambling companies are the payday loan companies who thankfully have pretty much disappeared.

I'd be happy with that. In terms of looks alone Allsop and Allsop's giant logo has to be the worst sponsor we've had, although that was remedied with their lovely neat logo for the first year with hummel

Yeah definitely. At least it would say Coventry on it as well which is progress.
Think it's Swansea City that used to have their university on theirs that I thought looked good. Much better to have a "local" based sponsor than some national betting company

I don't think we'll find it hard to attract different sponsors for the most popular sport on the planet.

But they do find it hard to find sponsors willing to offer anywhere near as much. Boylesports sponsorship is worth 6 figures I believe when it was announced which allsop allsop admitted they couldn't get anywhere near matching.

It's the same at premier League clubs. There are plenty of companies that would sponsor but not many that will pay as much.

Do you think with alcohol it’s more to do with increased information about health impacts, e.g. alcohol’s impact on mental health? Not saying it is but there’s other variables.
I agree that if they removed it from everything to do with footy then it may have an impact. However gambling and football culture are entrenched, and through advertising and sponsorship it’s pouring millions into the sport. That won’t and can’t just pull the plug on that. Shirt sponsorship is the golden goose but won’t have the impact. Football not the only sport either, horse racing would cease to exist, so it’s a complex issue.

As much as people don’t believe this, UK gambling companies are trying to get ahead of the legislation regarding safer gambling (as much as anything to mitigate government intervention). The more negative PR they have, the more restrictions they’ll have put in place.

UK operators should be working towards a single user profile, shared database for gambling protection, which prevents problem gamblers from jumping between different sites. Not to mention my previous point about capping U25 spend.
Advertising should also be more explicit about the risks, and with online gaming make the return to player % explicit.

As I say it's multi faceted but I'd say drinking is as entrenched in football culture at gambling is, if not more. Money coming in doesn't make dealing with the devil the right thing.

I believe that sponsorship will be significantly higher next season, the XL Motors on the back of the shirt have been asked for a huge hike if it's going to stay.
