Why are we so shit at set pieces? We’ve got all the ingredients, a couple of players who can deliver a decent ball, a few big tall centre backs. But we’ve been awful at them for ages, including throw ins.

What are people’s theories?

Delivery terrible and not consistent.

Movement awful and appears to be no set piece routines at all.

Finishing crap we’ve had free headers but most ballooned over the bar.

Doesn’t seem to be any creativity or variation in routines either-just aimlessly float or twat the corners as hard as you can!

It’s interesting isn’t it given the standard of improvements in our players individual and teams and Robins and Viveash ability to problem solve

It almost makes me feel that in the same way as Dyche Bruce and other dinosaurs focus on set plays out manager is after something more than just scoring goals

Almost like set piece goals aren’t really goals and it only counts if it’s a goal like the Ben sheaf one.

How many other teams score that goal

Bidwell trapped in the corner and 3 or 4 passes later sheaf slots one in from outside the box

I think if Robins felt it mattered he’d do something about it

My assumption would be that we just dont focus on them in training. Throw-ins have been abysmal for years now, we seem to wait for the opposition to get everyone marked up before doing anything. That could just be a speed of thought thing or it could be instructed (why you'd do that is beyond me though)

Most of our corners are awful which doesn't help .Don't think much work gets done on the training ground.

It’s the shooting from corners that winds me up. Yet everyone seems to love it for some reason
Shooting from a corner gets a big thumbs up from the crowd, short corners get a massively negative reaction, yet the likelihood of scoring from a short corner would absolutely dwarf that of a direct shot. Most fans just like to see spectacular and have zero logic. Same as when someone is like 35 yards from goal and there's a huge cry of 'shooooot'.

Who is good at heading the ball in our team though? Our midfield is tiny with Allen, Hamer and O’Hare. Palmer is taller but a flair player. Rose is timid. Gyokeres rarely scores with his head and is great at holding the ball up with his feet but isn’t your traditional target man. Godden and Walker are finishers. Fadz is the only person in the team who really enjoys attacking the ball in the air and dominating. When a team only has 1 threat in the air, it becomes a lot easier to defend against. I feel we’ve looked a lot more dangerous from corners since McNally arrived.

Agreed, We stopped trying to score headers from corners as soon as Dom left

He was hardly prolific himself. Averaging 2 goals a season (Rose record per game is pretty much the same) and the fact Blackburn are in that list with us doesn't really back up he is particularly a force in the air.

If the other teams want to just stack the box with giant CBs at every corner and spend 15 minutes a game drying off the ball for long throws then let them, I’m too busy watching Gus score worldies. Robinsball forever 🫡

On the flip side, we have conceded the fewest goals from set pieces in the league which is an enormous improvement.

Makes it all the more frustrating in some ways. We clearly have the ability to organise and dominate our own box but not others.

I guess we spend less time on them on the training field and is a trade off for having a better footballing team. As someone said I'd rather that that a team that focuses almost solely on scoring from set-pieces and play very industrial football.

Having said that it would be nice if we could practice throw-ins a bit more because they're terrible. And tell Hamer every time he shoots from a corner and doesn't score he's getting fined.

The throw ins are terrible, and have been for a while.
We can never turn a throw into a threat. Always tap back to the thrower. I’m amazed Cuffy is allowed to take them, totally ineffective and close to a foul throw.

A throw-in is just a pass. IMO it's criminal to give possession away from your throw, so back to the thrower is fine with me. I agree Cuffy gets away with a lot of sus looking throws though.

Also, we take a lot of free-kicks quickly and short, to stop the opposition resetting, so we'll lump it in less than other teams.

I'm really not bothered about how few we score from set pieces. Having said that, I'm still falling off a cliff backing McNally to score each game! :D

Thought for years we’ve been poor at free kicks, corners and especially throw ins. We often ask do they ever train at throw ins there so bad. What also amazes me is how many of our throw ins are foul throws the ref doesn’t call. The only time at throw ins recently we were any good was when McCallum was with us.

Hamer's inswinging corners are generally quite decent, but we're bloody awful from the other side whether it's Hamer or Bidwell/JWE.

Plain and simple we have strikers that do not rely on set pieces. Whether they be crosses or corners.

Half the time when we get a free kick in opposition half we choose (wrong option imo sonetimes) the short pass , rather than putting it into the mixer which other teams do.

It's just not our philosophy.

Pretty simple answer.

It is so weird, as others have said we have all the ingredients but it just hasn't happened. After pre season I thought Panzo was gonna be lethal from corners. Fadz and McNally aren't exactly small either. It's just an anomaly surely but I never feel particularly excited or confident when we get a corner.

Same for free kicks. Not sure Hamers style will be prolific. Will get the odd blinder. Palmers old school curler technique is probably a better bet.

Thow ins IMO are more noticeable with Allen out most time he was the receiver .On free kick its either a shot or sideways pass we very rarely use an outswinging one.On corners if is isn't Hamer taking it ,we seem unable to clear the nearest defender.

Think we really lack invention from corners. Maybe we are worried will get caught on the counter which used to happen a lot more. Hence, a conservative approach. Last time we scored a different corner was Shippers, I think

There’s more to just throw-ins than just lobbing it as far as possible into the box. So long as you don’t lose possession and/or momentum then our current approach seems fine to me.

Id like to see us take more short corners TBH, but also I seem to remember Hamer driving some lovely balls in when he first arrived but seems to have changed his style. Mostly though we just don’t seem to attack the ball well from crosses generally IMO.

Hamer is stuck in a loop of trying to score direct from a corner I recon. he deffo goes for it. can cause chaos but is a bit wasteful.

Was sat in a different seat near the corner for the Rotherham game revently. really shocking deliveries all game, Bidwell and Wilson-E barley beat the first man.

I'm not sure he's actually "shooting" is he? Just putting it in a really dangerous area. Id be interested to know how many hamer corners this season have been parried/ punched by the opposition keeper. I do feel with the technical ability that Hamer has, we should be doing better on these kinds of set play though

It’s not a dangerous area is it? Saturday was the first time we’ve scored and it was a major goalkeeping error.
