Why should Sporting shift? They might know that Gyokeres wants the move and they might suspect that Coventry will want the money to reinvest. They just need to hold their nerve, especially if Gyokeres has agreed terms with them - through his agent.

Maybe Lisbon might move on the price, say pay £20 million over 5 years, instead of £17 million over 3 years. That sort of thing is an option.

The risk to that strategy, I would suggest, is a club like West Ham, who can offer European football and who should be rolling around in Declan Rice money.
So why should we give in and not hold our nerve then?

Unless, of course, Lisbon want to keep the price down so they can offer higher wages.

Would still think he'd take PL football over higher wages in Portugal once he see's the terms that could be offered. Got to consider his international future too. Look what it's done for Isak.

Yes, definitely a factor. West Ham can ever offer Euro competition football.

But what would you do? Beaches in Portugal or panoramic views over the Thames mudflats around Dartford?

That grim picture of London you paint certainly hasnt stopped most of Europe's top players from coming has it?

Depends what people want doesn’t it? Maybe he’s planning kids and wants somewhere less crowded. Maybe his missus wants the sun. He does seem to really want to go to Lisbon.

I agree he does currently. Sure he'll change his mind once he see's what West Ham can offer him

Dunno. He doesn't seem like a typical footballer. London might have a pull for a lot of people, some might rather be by the sea than buried in people and noise. He'd still be earning a relative fortune.

Think he'd be more likely to start regularly, meaning more chance at caps for Sweden. He might back himself to get to an elite level via another move, and Sporting might be a better platform for that.

I do get the location thing. Who wouldnt want that?

Not sure I agree with starting more often at Sporting over say West Ham, Everton, Wolves or Brentford. He'd be number one striker at all of those clubs in their current states.

I can understand Vik thinking that Sporting will provide him with an opportunity to play European football and potentially, the chance for a move to one of the "big" clubs in a year or two if he's been successful.
However, given the standard of the Swedish national team at the moment, I'm not sure that is a big part in Viks thinking, as they're unlikely to qualify for the Euros or WC on current form.

All true. But I think Sporting Lisbon has an appeal that most EPL clubs can’t match.

Disagree completely. The Portuguese league is naff. They have 4/5 clubs playing on stadiums as small as Nuneaton.

The overall average attendance of the league is around 11,000.

The likes of Palace, Forest and West Ham are fan bigger pulls than Sporting. More money, far more media and global coverage etc.

Not convinced he'd start at any besides Brentford with Toney being suspended. Maybe Wolves. But then, do you pick either of those over Sporting and playing in Europe from day one?

Are Sporting in a better European competition or more likely to go further than the Prem teams? I don’t really follow European football

He's start at West Ham 100%. Antonio is about done. I know a couple of Hammers fans and they are very pleased to be linked to Vik, saying he'd be the focal point replacing Antonio.

Wolves again direct replacement for Jimenez, who like Antonio is looking like he's fading away.

Everton need to replace Calvert-Lewin, who is made of glass. They always like a powerful forward.

Not disagreeing with you theoretically but for me, it's about risk appetite at those clubs. Everton have shown they throw money at 'Names' and sort-of-proven quantities (e.g. Maupay). No track record of pulling directly from the EPL or less high profile leagues and giving those players a proper chance. West Ham, will fans of a club that's in Europe be patient with a player from the Championship leading their line? Not convinced. "West Ham are Massive" and all that! Brentford stands out a mile esp. with the Toney situation.

Lisbon is just as crowded as London. On top of that it's not a nice place. Having lived in the south Spain and visited a lot of cities in the area including Lisbon. I can hands down say it's the worst city I visited down there. Place is dirty, hot humid and the architecture is falling apart. I'm not keen on London, but would pick it in a heart beat over Lisbon. Only saving grace is the pastel de natta which are delicious 🤤🤤

But their ‘drug problem’ and imprisonment policies are way more advanced than ours. 💡🤗

Every square you go to in the city you are constantly having people try to sell you lumps of hash. I'm not against it per say but they were very aggressive with it, trying to force it in to my hand 😅😅

Speaking as someone who has lived for years in both cities, London is considerably less safe (and I'm not saying it's dangerous, but Portugal is paradise by comparison) and Lisbon has great weather most of the year.

I can see Gyokeres being sold on the package - despite not being Champion's League this year, they could easily do it next year because of the general standard in the Portuguese league being so lopsided. They've finished Top 3 in 8 of the last 10 years - Top 2 automatically qualify for Champion's League and I think 3rd can still qualify.

Top 2/3 is mainly between Sporting, Benfica & Porto every year. So it's an OK domestic league to hopefully get in good form and then the prospect of regularly playing some of the better teams in Europe. I can see how that might appeal vs a bottom half Premiership club where he may not get regular football, or face the club imploding / being relegated within a year.

You're referring to a handful of the very central, touristy squares. So it's pretty visible, crowded and safe. Also, none of those drugs are real, by the way. When I lived in London I never spent any time in Leicester Square either - which is a horrible place to be also.

If I was Gyokeres I’d jump at Lisbon; better climate, food, different culture, language, friendly. The ‘drug’ problem is only more visible because it has been decriminalised….in turn this has made the whole country but especially Lisbon a much safer place.

He obviously wants to be a big fish in a small pond by flouncing over thos move to little Lisbon. He'd get swallowed up and spat out in the PL and he knows it. Wouldn't be surprised to see him end up at Rangers or Celtic.

Just a thought , would we be happy with a couple of their players and a lower fee ?

I don't think it really works unless they're players that have been properly scouted and are preferred by our recruitment department.

I'd be conscious about replicating the Bournemouth/Wilson scenario where we just ended up receiving dregs that were nowhere near good enough.
