I think he's preparing the way for what happens after he wins the general election and every one says "what's changing then?" and he says "well nothing actually"

It's easy to promise the world when your in opposition, but it's very different when your called upon to actually deliver.

Personally I feel utterly dejected and let down and abandoned by the state of British politics, the Tories deserve to go, and have to go, but Labour arn't fit to govern anything, and the Libdems and greens are a fucking joke. surely there has to be a better way than this cluster fuck.

The silly thing is it has no debt, it costs the taxpayers zilch in funding and the way it funds program making is unique to the industry. Compare it to Netflix who’s massively in debt and its share price is tumbling. There is zero logic in selling it off, which is probably why Boris and Nads thought it a good idea. This government would only waste the money anyway.

"Channel 4 makes up to £2 billion for the economy each year. In 2021, Channel 4's revenues hit £1 billion, a 19% growth from 2020. It reported a £74 million pre-tax surplus and net cash reserves of £201 million."

That's from Google. Can someone with better financial understanding than me, explain how a company that only turns over £1bn per annum with pre-tax profits of £74m, makes £2bn per annum for the Economy?

I also dont see why it should remain publicly owned. I agree we should never have privatised water or fuel, but no business owning C4 (or BBC tbf), any more than owning a supermarket and setting food prices.

Assuming it’s as successful, sure. But we don’t own media companies for economic reasons.

What’s your plan to pay the bills once you’ve sold off all your assets? Rishi Sunak OnlyFans?

Correct Netflix carries a lot of debt but after a big drop in share price it’s been climbing for past 12 months. Not sure comparing the two is wise, Netflix has 250m paying subscribers worldwide and I think makes 12bn a year. I’ve got no big issue with C4 remaining under public ownership as it makes a little bit of money so isn’t a burden currently but I suppose the question is whether it’s really a governments role to own tv channels..unless you live in Russia I guess ? Also then whether it will remain profitable. The TV worlds changing rapidly and if we can get £1bn for it now, it might not be a bad shout

Well it isn't it was a glib comment to a programme no one it seems watched

It is interesting though how it uses a GDP argument to support its reasoning to remain under public ownership as even when it makes losses (as it has done in the past) it uses an argument that it still makes positive net contributions to the economy.

Its sort of the argument deployed to retain the Royal Family - namely their wages pay for themselves

Recent attempts to measure the size of the impact of the royal family on UK tourism have estimated the capital value of UK monarchy as a business to be £67.5 billion (up from £44 billion in 2012) and the annual contribution to the UK economy to be £1.766 billion.

Culturally it's the government's role, remove the profit motive so we get original innovative content, some of which will work and some bomb.

The main issue in a BBC sense is the same government (apolitical) assesses in too large a part by quantitative means, so we get the same sort of content, with less budget to make it!
