Context matters.

If we go in at half time 1-0 up away from home then I would expect players to be more conservative, given that a 0-0 second half means 3 points.

When we’re 1-0 down and play 45 minutes without really looking like scoring that’s a problem, and players deserve worse ratings.
We did look like scoring though.

So if one of the shots by Simms or Godden goes in off the post (or a defender's arse), Wilson somehow keeps out their header, and we scrape a 1-0 win, you're saying the ratings for Eccles, Sakamoto and the rest would still have been the same? No chance. People would be crowing about a professional job away from home, only one point off the playoffs, and every player's rating would have been inflated by at least 1 or 2.

I get why it happens though.
You really are way too reasonable for this forum.

Wilson - could have made a better effort for their goal
Fadz - poor game by his standard, wouldn't expect Dickie to beat him in the air for the goal
Van Ewijk - really like him but a little frustrating yesterday, shooting when he should have passed and passing when he should have shot
Dasilva - some good interplay in build up play, but useless once he got near the penalty area
Winks - best of the defenders
Sheaf - excellent return to action and was the driver in our good start to the game
Eccles - not sure his corners were as bad as they are perceived, some fault also lies with Fadz/ Thomas etc who just didn't seem to compete
Simms/ Godden - need to hit the target more regularly, if keeper saves then fine but rather that than no chance at all by shooting wide
I think you need to go back and rewatch those corners

I'm not trying to say that Eccles' corners were Beckham like but it looks like an element of our supporters have a beef with him, and that to them he is slowly becoming the new Shipley! The corner issue offers an obvious stick to beat him with. Oggy alluded to it in the commentary last weekend, but all the corners in the first half were clearly aimed at someone making a run to near post and then flicking the ball on, as Godden did for a Wright goal earlier in the season. The trouble with that is, if it doesn't succeed and the attacking player doesn't time his run correctly then the ball hits their first man and everyone automatically says 'shit corner'. Likewise in the 2nd half when he tried to change it a bit, there was one particular instance when he hit it to the back post, but every single attacking player ran to the near post, which indicated a clear lack of communication amongst the attacking players. The likes of Fadz, Thomas and Winks should be making different runs to different areas, not running to the same place. I still maintain that the poor movement by our players at attacking corners, is as much a problem as Eccles' poor delivery of them.

Agree with this. I would add that fans often overestimate the value of corners as they rarely end up in a goal anyway. There is always a perception that a corner is a great chance and crowds get excited but even with great set piece delivery they are not as dangerous as people think. I would be interested to know whether our conversation rate this season is any worse than previous seasons.

It seems this is just another opportunity to criticise Eccles unfairly. Previously Kelly was getting the same treatment despite being our best player in some of the games. Our problem has been much further forward than the midfield, in the number 10 position and of course the strikers. Yes I know the loss of Hamer means the midfield is weaker but it isn't our weakest area by any means.

If anything I’d imagine it’s better than average compared to recent seasons.

I always thought the arm in the air before they take it tells the players in the box where it’s going. Is that not the case?

It's not as sophisticated as that. Perhaps he's just checking the wind direction. Does he lick his finger first?

The criticism of Eccles’ corners isn’t that they don’t result in goals, it’s that actually we end up getting counter attacked more often than not from the poor delivery. And that even against sides who bring everyone back for the corner.

They’re as dangerous for us as they are the opposition.

Yes no critism from me but I'd rather he in that position as he's scored couple of peaches from that position, let someone else have a Go

Allen's aren't bad here, and it's not like he's going to win any headers in the box is it.

Agree with whoever said corners rarely end in goals but when you have 15 of them, at least give yourself a chance by beating the first man. I'm not expecting them all perfect or even shots ala Gus, but get them in the mixer whoever takes them!

I do agree that there’s sadly a
“shit on Eccles “ campaign gaining momentum. He’ll be a good player if the fans can stay off his back.

It used to be a signal. Now it’s just “ look at me I’m taking a corner”
I always thought one arm front post, 2 arms back post, but then you wouldn't tell the opposition surely? All teams do it so can't be many codes. Would make sense to have something different like where you place the ball or someone stands in a certain place so they all know.
