FOREST DROP McGOLDRICK HINT
NOTTINGHAM Forest boss Sean O'Driscoll has dropped a heavy hint that he will be open to offers for striker David McGoldrick in January.
The 24-year-old striker has made a big impact since joining the Sky Blues on loan last month prompting speculation that he could get a fresh start at the City Ground.
But O'Driscoll said yesterday: “At the minute, he is better off where he is. His confidence will be high and, if he can put himself in the shop window, that would benefit everyone.“
He added: “David worked really hard here and got himself fit but he needed games.
The fact that he is scoring goals will boost his confidence and that is an on-going thing. When you score more, you get more confidence and then things spiral. “League One is not the greatest division from what I have seen this season but you still have to score the goals.
“If he can get into a routine of scoring goals then he can be an asset.
“When a player is out of contract at the end of a season, they have a choice. The idea was for him to go and get some games, then we would review the situation as and when.“
City could face stiff competition for the player who can talk to other clubs from January, but they may have an advantage as McGoldrick is settled and playing well.
“His form hasn't surprised me,“ said Coventry boss Mark Robins. “The key to it is getting a rhythm. The only way you get that is by playing games and David has certainly found a rhythm of late.
“We have him until January and I am sure there will be one or two people looking at how well he's doing here.
Money talks and someone might come in with a permanent deal for him that was acceptable. Maybe we can keep him, maybe he will want to stay but if an offer comes in and Forest want to sell that's another avenue.
“I'm talking out of school really because he's a Forest player and they might have other ideas so we have to keep monitoring the situation. But we're lucky to have him until then and we'll make sure we look after him because he is repaying us with some really good performances and working hard in training as well.“
Robins revealed that Cody McDonald and Gary cSheffrey are back in training and vying for a lace in tomorrow's squad to face Notts County at he Ricoh Arena, and says he has a number of players pushing for a place in the first team.
“We have got Cody and other options if it is not going to be David come the New Year,“ he said. “But we've still got 12 or 13 weeks until he's due to go back and whose to say he's not happy due to go back and whose to say he's not happy and he's not going to stay. But we'll focus on getting everyone ready for any eventuality.
“I can only pick 11 players and I'm looking for consistency and quality all the time and there are one or two who haven't played yet but are starting to look sharp in training.
“I will have a look at them again in the Under-21 game at Leicester tonight and hopefully they will be pushing for a starting berth because we need everyone fighting for a place and those lads in possession battling to retain the shirt.
“There are quite a few knocking on the door. And that's what I am looking for because we have to develop our own and get them in to the first team environment, and there will be a pathway for the ones who warrant it.“
Fit-again Kevin Kilbane will get a run out with the development squad at Leicester tonight while John Fleck is back in training following an ear injury sustained at Swindon and is expected to be available to face the Magpies.
