Not sure if you’ve misread, nowhere am I talking about the racist or misogynistic language, except where I expressed dismay at the blatant lie that it wasn’t racist and misogynistic.

My issue is with reporting him to the police for incitement to violence when that very clearly wasn’t what happened. Saying someone needs shooting is a very normal figure of speech which in no way is a call to violence.

The "wants to make you hate all black women" seems to be the phrase which is drawing the most ire.

That's the story. That needs to be front and centre of the coverage.

This is a private meeting a donor has had not the floor of the Commons.

Im not sure what over policing very normal language does for anyone except draw attention away from the actual issues and make the people raising them look ridiculous. There’s such a thing as overplaying your hand. And there’s such a thing as minimising serious hate speech for political reasons, which is what’s happening here.

And I’m sure those with outlier traumatic experiences don’t respond in the normal manner, which is why we don’t just do whatever victims want as a crime response.

I posted a link a few pages ago but the Guardian has done an article about him making unsavoury comments about Indians too. There’s a clear pattern of behaviour forming here and the Tories are quite deliberately digging themselves into a hole over it. Which seems really stupid given that the pattern of behaviour forming suggests that it’s highly likely that they’ll be more comments to come out. The fact that Sunak doesn’t seem to be able to envisage that scenario even after the latest story broke last night and sent his minions to double down on his defence of clearly racist comments, even by their own admission this morning tells you everything that you need to know about Sunak’s moral code. When he was at the lectern the other week talking about extremism I knew it would come back to bite him from within his own ranks, just amazed at how quickly that happened.

If you can’t see that it’s your issue. Stating out how ridiculous your stance is based on the evidence of our own eyes and ears is not an insult it’s a statement of fact. The fact that you’ve gone full grendull and are now attempting to start a straw man argument using a wholly unrelated in every way case is a measurement of how how ridiculous you’re being. Again a statement of fact, not an insult. If you want a complement I’d say going full grendull is very out of character for you even on things we may have disagreed on in the past. Try taking Diane Abbot out of the equation and imagine someone had said similar about a woman you respect and love, maybe then the penny will drop.

If I found out someone had said in private years ago my girlfriend/daughter needs shooting then i wouldn’t call the police, no. And I don’t think many would. You’re again throwing insults about and making emotional pleas but aren’t actually addressing what I’ve said.

I don’t think saying someone needs shooting should be criminalised. I think the bar for inciting violence is much higher. The Twitter joke guy for example shouldn’t meet it yet he broadcast his words publicly at a time of fear about terrorism. That doesn’t mean he should have been arrested.

If you think reporting it is what’s made Abbott less safe, then surely your issue is with the paper for publishing an incitement to violence.

But I think all it is is once someone’s on the naughty list it’s fine to throw whatever at them cos fuck em they’re an arsehole. I’d just rather not live under that kind of system. Policing of language should be done as little as possible and with strong evidence of harm and should be applied equally to people you like and dislike.

To want someone arrested for this is to want half of parliament arrested for often saying similar things to actual crowds of people they lead. Jess Phillips “stab him in the front” McDonnells “assassinate Thatcher” Umunnas “call off the dogs”. I could go on. And there’s a much stronger case for MPs making public statements inciting violence than private citizens in private.
