I remember that game. We were 1-0 up into stoppage time and Zidane scored a free kick then almost immediately afterwards James tripped Henry for a penalty. This just popped up on twitter

France just past their best at this point but still a formidable starting 11
We got robbed in the Portugal game at the Euros to be fair. Horrendous refereeing decision to rule out Campbell’s goal.

Yes I said France were best their best at this point , mainly down to those 2 reallyI know late 90s and early 00s football gives you the horn, but a defence containing Gallas and Silvestre is…questionable.
England fans would have complained had we lost the final that we had a piss easy run and only beat a rubbish Brazil sideAnd if it wasn't for calamity seaman mistake against a fantastic Brazil in 2002 we'd have had turkey in the semi final , granted a decent turkey side .. and a final against a very beatable Germany which we'd have probably lost on penalties

How would you make a better 11 from that squad?
Maybe go 4231
James
Cole
Campbell
Terry
Neville
Beckham
Scholes
Gerrard
Lampard
Rooney
Owen
Still feels a bit shoehorned but you at least take the defensive responsibility away from Lampard and Gerrard.
Here is the squad for reference - England Euro 2004 Squad
Agree, would be much more balance and then you can swap one on for fresh legs.I'm not sure about that particular squad , but in later years the idea really was that rather than play both lampard and Gerrard England should have played michael Carrick and or lampard Gerrard .
Germany throughout history are testament to thatAgree, would be much more balance and then you can swap one on for fresh legs.
People need to remember, even this summer, the best players one the pitch doesn't always = best team.

It was the instance of playing 4-4-2 that hampered us too. Hindsight is 20:20 but a 4-3-3 or 5-3-2/3-4-3 could’ve suited that England team well.I'm not sure about that particular squad , but in later years the idea really was that rather than play both lampard and Gerrard England should have played michael Carrick and or lampard Gerrard .

The defeat at home in the last final with what, 10% Italian fans in the ground wasn’t just a failure, it was full on humiliation.Come on evo. ‘Failed’ is a strong word. To get to a World Cup semi and losing a Euro final on pens is hardly failure
Failure is getting knocked out of Euros by Iceland in final 16 in 2016 or not even qualifying in 2008 or finishing bottom in our World Cup Group in 2014 with one point

Of course it was. England were at home with 90% England fans in the stadium. Any other major international side would have sacked the manager after that. Italy were there for the taking as well.Hardly, Italy were unbeaten in 32 or 33 games at the time and won all bar five I think. Yeah, it included a load of gimmes but mentally they didn’t know how to be beaten. It will always be frustrating as I thought we could’ve beaten them, even on pens but failure and humiliation ?! No chance

Didn’t France keep Deschamps after they lost the Euro final at home in 2016?Of course it was. England were at home with 90% England fans in the stadium. Any other major international side would have sacked the manager after that. Italy were there for the taking as well.
Sacked their manager who’s taken them to their first major final in 50+ years and lost on pens ?!
Neither of them were comparable - England were essentially playing a home game rather than a neutral final.Didn’t France keep Deschamps after they lost the Euro final at home in 2016?
Now you've done it.This argument hasn't been done to death.
i just want some goals tonight!Wouldn’t mind a Scotland shock. Also wouldn’t turn my nose up at an absolute German pounding.
Go football!
