France just past their best at this point but still a formidable starting 11

We got robbed in the Portugal game at the Euros to be fair. Horrendous refereeing decision to rule out Campbell’s goal.

And if it wasn't for calamity seaman mistake against a fantastic Brazil in 2002 we'd have had turkey in the semi final , granted a decent turkey side .. and a final against a very beatable Germany which we'd have probably lost on penalties 😂

I know late 90s and early 00s football gives you the horn, but a defence containing Gallas and Silvestre is…questionable.
Yes I said France were best their best at this point , mainly down to those 2 really

England fans would have complained had we lost the final that we had a piss easy run and only beat a rubbish Brazil side ;)

Certainly can't call that brazil team rubbish to be fair 😆

We played Sweden (rank 12 ) , Argentina (rank 2 ) Nigeria (rank 18 ) Denmark (rank 10 ) and Brazil (rank 1 )

How would you make a better 11 from that squad?

Maybe go 4231

James

Cole
Campbell
Terry
Neville

Beckham
Scholes

Gerrard
Lampard
Rooney

Owen

Still feels a bit shoehorned but you at least take the defensive responsibility away from Lampard and Gerrard.

Here is the squad for reference - England Euro 2004 Squad

I'm not sure about that particular squad , but in later years the idea really was that rather than play both lampard and Gerrard England should have played michael Carrick and or lampard Gerrard .

Agree, would be much more balance and then you can swap one on for fresh legs.

People need to remember, even this summer, the best players one the pitch doesn't always = best team.

Germany throughout history are testament to that

Always a good team but never the best individual 11

Well until about 8 years ago then they went a bit shit

Even then, for a period you had Carrick and Hargreaves starting together at club level. I’d have made use of that and played Lampard or Gerrard in front. Think there’s a huge benefit of using club partnerships at international level. You could suggest it was a big part of Spain’s dominance as 8 of their starting players played for 2 clubs.

It was the instance of playing 4-4-2 that hampered us too. Hindsight is 20:20 but a 4-3-3 or 5-3-2/3-4-3 could’ve suited that England team well.

Fans warned about singing songs about the luftwaffe. Those up in arms about it will be quick to complain when they get a smack.

Beckham was a big problem really as he could only properly function in a 442 and was the pin-up of the time. Don’t get me wrong, great player, but meant we had to sacrifice the rest of the team structure.

That’s not necessarily isolated to 2004 though as you’d still have to accommodate Rooney and Owen in the same team whilst having Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes etc in midfield. If only Andy Thorn was manager, eh?

Come on evo. ‘Failed’ is a strong word. To get to a World Cup semi and losing a Euro final on pens is hardly failure

Failure is getting knocked out of Euros by Iceland in final 16 in 2016 or not even qualifying in 2008 or finishing bottom in our World Cup Group in 2014 with one point
The defeat at home in the last final with what, 10% Italian fans in the ground wasn’t just a failure, it was full on humiliation.

Hardly, Italy were unbeaten in 32 or 33 games at the time and won all bar five I think. Yeah, it included a load of gimmes but mentally they didn’t know how to be beaten. It will always be frustrating as I thought we could’ve beaten them, even on pens but failure and humiliation ?! No chance

Of course it was. England were at home with 90% England fans in the stadium. Any other major international side would have sacked the manager after that. Italy were there for the taking as well.

Didn’t France keep Deschamps after they lost the Euro final at home in 2016?

This argument hasn't been done to death.

Can the Euro 24 thread please be used to talk about Euro 24 and not go on and on and on about Southgate. Make a Southgate thread and go wild.

I don't care how dirty it feels, I'm cheating on the Germans tonight.

Half of Scotland’s team are probably English anyway so it’s a bit like having a B team.

Thinking 2-0 Germany tonight.

Wouldn’t mind a Scotland shock. Also wouldn’t turn my nose up at an absolute German pounding.

Go football!

Scotland team an odd mix of strong players like Robertson, Tierney, McTominay, then your standard Championship players. Expect ein Sieg fuer Deutschland

Have to say I do love the Jock National Anthem!!

Saying that hope ze Germans get an early goal to take the sting out of them and go and rout them 4-0.
