Many people in those days scrimped and saved to buy a house so that they had something tangible to leave to their heirs. Who now criticise the process,

You speak as though my wife and I didn’t scrimp and save to pay a deposit about 10 times the value of the house my grandparents bought.

He even seems to resent his own grandparents - it’s tragic really

Buy a cheaper house in a poorer area then and do it up

Actually, fuck it.

I AM alright Jack. Do you know why? Because I worked bloody hard in a stressful job, working 50% hours on top of my contract unpaid, climbing back up the ladder after three redundancies and finally retiring at 67, paying shed loads of tax along the way.

And I’ve just decided I am not ashamed of that.

There it is.

Young people just need to work hard.

Boomers gonna boom.

Yep I’m 59 and my parents never even owned a house.

My first house was a rather grim flat which I was paying over 50% of my income on a 15% interest and I ended up £5 grand (15% of its value) in negative equity. I had two jobs to pay the mortgage.

The victim mentality is pathetic

Everyone has to work hard - unless of course they are given a seat on the board at their parents business and benefit from selective education

And you speak as though the people here don’t work hard currently. Nobody is trying to invalidate the life’s work of past generations.

But it’s a well accepted reality that my generation is the first one to find itself worse off economically than the one before.

Despite your repeated attempts in this thread to boast I am not envious or jealous.

How is he boasting?

You couldn’t be more wrong. Pretty offensive statement that.

You should perhaps look how resentful and offensive as well as bitter and jealous you actually come across.

Perhaps rather than whine about what you haven’t got write a gratuity list as to what you have and some of this burning resentment may be released

I’m pointing out that I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth, or up my nose.

Or like him was afforded the opportunity of a private education

Nobody said you were. Nor that I loathe my grandparents.

However, the example of their house value is just a striking one that shows how house prices have risen much further than inflation with big consequences for people renting and buying today.

They still will and when you are old your property will be worth millions. Will you be giving it to your offspring or the homeless centre up the road.

I wonder

People work hard today and pay tax the same as you did, you doing unpaid work is not virtuous and you're hardly unique in that

Genuinely surprised at the pessimism on here. You're about to get the government you want with effectively no opposition. It's likely they will govern for at least a decade.
Why are you not looking forward with unbridled optimism?
Is it because you know that socialism wont significantly improve your life?

I paid toward my own fees and then paid back a fair bit once I started earning. Not that I actually had a say in where I went to school mind you

I refused to go to Bablake when I passed my 11 plus. You must have had a good job at 11 to contribute
