Only just saw the Anderson one for Denmark and thought it was very, very harsh

Under the current rules, obviously a pen. But it shouldn't be. I really don't see that he was trying to make himself bigger in order to stop the cross.

Seemed very harsh.
I’m gobsmacked by that

Yeah, with the current system we’re asking defenders to have ninja like reflexes to move their natural running positioned hand out of the way of a ball blasted towards them.

The point he’s making Pete is that there are certain body movements you do where it isn’t possible to keep your arm locked to the side of your body. So going ‘haha that’s handball, penalty’ for such cases is harsh.

It is, but I fear we’ll have to get to a place where any contact with the hand/arm is handball regardless of intent.

Exactly.

I am saying under the current law, that's 100% a penalty.

The law is an ass though.

And in such a case we can’t be surprised if we start seeing players aim for the opponent’s arm instead of his teammate in the box or the goal itself.

What would be a penalty then?
I do wonder the other way around what would be said
I would just urge you to watch the video clip again, Pete.

The appeals from the German players are not at all animated and seem to just be in some sort of small hope, looking at them.

The law needs to be changed.

The closeness of the player to the ball has to be a factor too. If they have no time to react etc

That just seems very harsh, that one last night

But they had to give it

So how many changes does old Sad Sack make for today’s game?

Now that he has ‘managed’ the group is this the time he changes things around and lets us off the leash? Or keeps it the same with a view of making changes around the 70th min?

I’d like to see 3 changes (Gordon, Palmer and Mainoo for Foden, Saka and Gallagher) but I’m expecting just the one, Mainoo for Gallagher.

Once again, an interesting game, in the knockout stage of a major tournament & all anyone talks about is VAR... Yet we're supposed to believe it's improved the game.

As you say, I expect it will just be Mainoo for Gallagher, but I'd be going with something like this:

I fully expect a 1 nil England win today , I think with mainoo next to rice(expected only change ) the team will have a bit more balance however we do need natural width and with bellingham and foden both having the freedom to occupy wherever the fuck they want on the pitch we still don't have the final 3rd balance

I take a win no matter how it arrives at this point , pens , arse , play shit and fluke it .. all the way to the final 🙌

Yep, all reports point towards just Mainoo for Gallagher, despite Foden missing a few days (and will naturally be physically and mentally tired) and Trippier clearly not fully fit. Plus players like Kane and Bellingham looked shattered.

It was always optimistic he’d willingly drop any of Bellingham/Saka/Kane/Foden.

However, Southgate isn’t an idiot and whatever you think of him, he’s got us to the late stages of several tournaments. Let’s hope him and the players turn it on from today.

His hand was out from his body, and was moving towards the ball. However, that was due to momentum rather than deliberate. A penalty was harsh. However I think Germany not getting anything would also not have been fair. An indirect free kick would have been fair IMO.

Someone else mentioned about all contact with hand is a handball and I have no problem with that as it creates clarity, as long as the punishment is not severe. A penalty is far too much so say it's a free kick, even in the area. If it's deliberate send the player off as extra punishment.

This offside rule has to change, the decision below is technically right with modern technology but for all intents and purposes this is two players standing side by side. Doesn’t seem in the spirit of the game to rule goals out for a boot size up.

The thing with this and with Haji at Wembley is it's not clear and obvious. And what advantage is the attacker gaining by being a toenail offside?

We should win this really, I think we will see a better performance with some attacking structure and a 3-0

1 change Mainoo in for Gallagher...
Yeah, happy with that.

One, I like the look of Mainoo and he seemed to take immediately to international football. And two, Gallagher, on the flip side, seems to lack the quality of a tournament player.

What would be great this evening, would be if we could be winning easily and then afford to give Luke Shaw a 10 min or so, run out. See how rusty he is.

I'm hearing a lot of arrogance about just turning up and beating Slovakia. They're quite an organised team and they are strong. We'll have to play a lot better than our previous games if we want to win.

Mainoo seems an impressive character.

If things aren’t working today I really hope Southgate is brave at HT/60 minutes or (happy path) we’re comfortable at 60 minutes he gives players some minutes.

My issue isn't with Mainoo, but the other 10 that have started all 4 games now. Palmer did more in 20 mins than Saka has done all tournament. Bellingham is an amazing footballer but has had 1 good 30 mins in 3 games. Kane has been poor every game.

He's picking players on reputation not on form.

If we play sh*te again, but scrape through, I'll take it - but won't change my mind that Southgate is stubborn/inept.
