It's a fair point from Robins, experience isn't an innate feature of any player so buying a player purely to bring it can be short sighted. That said, that wasn't the only reason we were interested in Browne. I think his message is looking for players like one of the centre backs to step up and provide a bit more leadership.

Yes I agree, I would add Sheaf and Eccles to that. I remember Coventry signing Terry Yorath who was a leader and an obvious Captain. At the time he was a similar age to Sheaf with a similar amount of appearances.

Age isn't the only measure of experience. Drive and maturity are also important attributes.

He's a dependable 7/10 player who does the simple stuff well. Yes, he may not get you off your seat, score or assist loads of goals and his set pieces would be bettered by a one-legged blind Oompah Loompah but you need someone in your squad who can play that no nonsense role.

I think a lot of posters are overlooking the loan market. How good could a premier league loan be for the striker to replace godden? Easier to convince and not such a big outlay in fees.

There is absolutely no way we need 2.

In the scenario Simms gets injured then the replacement Striker can go there
if he gets injured then wright will go there.

If it got that bad which imo is extremely unlikely then we would loan someone in come january.

Wouldn't put to much weight behind it but in the unseen his 'team' won the mini games shooting drill by a fair margin.

Maybe Burroughs is the RB backup, Howley the new CM and Obikwu the Godden replacement.

We’ll basically have the same squad as last season just with Rudoni swapped in for O’Hare and some new cover on the wings, that’s a very minor improvement imo. If that’s all we get then that basically means the exact same issues of transition from defence to attack and no cover for players like Sheaf or MVE if they get injured, not to mention the fact we’ll have a lovely choice between Collins and Wilson in goal…

Well if you invest a lot in a recruitment department you would expect them to do the lion's share of the work.

I would imagine Robin's outlines what he wants, then comes back in at the end of the process and final interview. King will obviously have a big say on the financial side. That's how all the bigger well run club's operate.

It's this, you don't have a manager dictating.

The most successful clubs all flow downwards from a clear direction, that a manager is part of but not totally responsible for.

You set a playing strategy, around how you want or think you win games of football. You then highlight traits and skills that the players within that system require, the recruitment team then try and find players who fit that.

I.e. if your right back doesn't need to track back because you cover him with 2 cm's, but you need him to fire diagonal balls in. You find a Trent Alexander Arnold akin.

That department then presents a list of players who fit the design to a group, that discuss commercial viability and at that point the manager is involved, because maybe you need to discuss intangibles/character etc etc

I’m really going to try and watch Eccles intently this season, I don’t know what people see in him but there must be something in it, I personally don’t see it at all but there’s too many rave reviews for it to not be true

He's the absolute engine of the team.
Does ALL the dirty stuff so Sheaf can look majestic pinging passes here there and everywhere.

Eccles breaks up the opposition play, wins back possession, protects the back four, makes numerous interceptions and blocks, , and gets the ball to our "flair" players so we can then attack.

We've got adequate cover for most positions, but no one can cover Eccles.
Just look at how poor we are when Eccles isn't it the midfield. Lats certainly isn't as good as Eccles in the middle of the park.

And Dasilva on the other hand just makes the coffee at half time!

Exactly, only yesterday a lot of people were saying we needed a ball carrying type of box to box midfielder and that Eccles is too similar to Sheaf so would he not be considered a DM?

Thinking about the experience argument, I would actually say a midfield of Sheaf and Eccles has a lot of experience now and even if you add Rudoni to that, he’s been playing in the Championship for a number of years now. Robins makes a great point that we have the majority of the same team, all who have a minimum of a year playing together in the Championship which will be a great foundation to build on.

Relax .... there's a long way to go, and if needed we can exploit the loan market.

Compared to the last quarter of last season, we've only lost O'hare of any real note.
And we've brought in EMC and Rudoni who look to be top quality, we've got Sakamoto back to fitness and we won't be waiting half a season for Wright and Simms to find their feet.

We will start the season with a settled back 4 that actually know each other and won't need to change formation half way through the season, and we could even have an international keeper on board.

I'm confident that we will replace Godden with a striker that's actually mobile and can run faster than a granny with a zimmer frame, and for a change our bench will have some genuine quality and options on it rather than crap players and kids.

So keep calm and trust in the process !

He was talking about current players stepping up into the leadership role that Fadz and Kelly had. He implied there wouldn’t be many experienced players coming in but nothing about players in general

I tend to agree. I can't think any ambitious striker would want to come here and sit on the bench watching Simms and Wright. They won't get many games.

Goalkeeper and left back are the areas of concern but the problem is we have two contracted players in both positions.

I think that's why we haven't made a move for Burrows this window, to the surprise of the Peterborough owner, because we have players there who would be hard to shift. Goalkeeper on the other hand I think we would accept a nominal fee for Wilson, and somebody would take him up.
