Ps thought you’d probably like this type of thing….
As much as Howe has done well at Bournemouth and Newcastle, he's never won anything. Potter likewise. And I think Eddie howe is the obvious choice , a nice guy who seems to be able to get his teams playing nice attacking football , will be good in the dressing room too and will keep the squad harmony .
Will cost the FA though
I worry a bit about Graham Potter , but he's out of work and probably the obvious choice should Gareth leave
I absolutely do not want to see Lee carsley managing our national team
I would approach Newcastle
Howe is good in the dressing room , is a nice bloke , plays attractive football , develops players well .. Anthony Gordon has improved under him at Newcastle already as an example
I'm a huge fan of Steve Cooper ( not the poster on here ) he's been involved with England before with success but he's just gone to Leicester
I do actually agree that it makes sense to take time over appointing the successor. There isn’t any need to rush and getting it right matters far more.Arguably the best English manager in football. Bearing in mind pre-season has started, it’s possible that Newcastle or even Howe himself would knock England back. Are you confident enough in the second and third choices out there to get rid of Southgate?
David Ornstein was on The Athletic podcast arguing that the alternatives are not so obvious and perhaps it’s better to stick with him. Yet, I can’t see Southgate staying on and think he should leave with his head held high.
Without a track record of winning major tournaments, we’re back to square one.
I was just with some Forest fans who described Cooper as just as negative as Southgate and reckon Leicester are down with him. Personally, I like Cooper but I’m not familiar with his football as a weekly spectator
Why ? You can win nothing and come out looking like alex fergusonIf I were an aspiring manager with a reputation but no trophies I wouldn't go near the England job
Or you can have a successful tournament and still have people think you've done a shit jobWhy ? You can win nothing and come out looking like alex ferguson
Pep would be a disaster, I don't think what he does would work in international football. It took him a session and buying in a whole new back 5 to make it work at Manchester City. The need to go all out and get Klopp - or guardiola, Pep’s contract is up next may. Could easily have an interim until Pep comes in.
World Cup qualifiers don’t start until next June I think
That bit HAS to be on the manager, that of either, going a goal up and then sitting back, or getting back into a game and then sitting back. It was far too cautious.Another frustrating final defeat because we didn't press home an advantage. We looked ok first half (though I did think the ref was being pretty generous to us), though Spain were the better team, then looked all at sea start of the second half, After managing to score and get the other team a bit rattled we again sat back, let them get their composure back and then tried to defend for ET which was always going to end in tears. Spain deserved to win so fair play to them.
Kane was awful all tournament and was a huge part of the reason for our poor number of goals and xG, though our entire transition was so slow, not playing the first time pass and taking extra touches so the other teams go back in position. That seemed to be result in Foden having a poor tournament. Bellingham was massively underwhelming other than his overhead kick. He looked tired and the team wasn't playing the way he is used to at Madrid. Ad you can tell his time in Spain is rubbing off on him - so many times he'd just fall to the floor at the slightest touch and expect a free kick.
To coin some famous words:That bit HAS to be on the manager, that of either, going a goal up and then sitting back, or getting back into a game and then sitting back. It was far too cautious.
Then, everyone to a man agreed Kane was not playing well. He should have been rested or dropped. We had games in which we could have definitely rested him.
I know some will point to his goalscoring record and I am indeed one of those who bloody loves the guy, but at times it truly was like we were playing with 10 men.
It's fine saying he had to be picked, but he unfortunately was one of the main reasons we kept getting giving the ball back to the opposition and putting pressure back on ourselves and he is also one of the main reasons we keep playing so deep.
One decent performance in seven just is nowhere near good enough. We didn't score enough goals and we didn't have enough shots on target.
Southgate has to go. The fans are getting increasingly frustrated with him and we still continue to keep on flunking it at the death
I'm far from saying Southgate is perfect, but i don't buy the attitude towards England from the fans/press, that its always the manager's fault...
How many "golden generations" have we had in my adult life? How many supposedly "world class" players? And we've had a number of managers who were top level (Capello and Sven come to mind).
To some extent, we just aren't as good as we hype ourselves up to be.
I’m not convinced that either Howe or Potter would want the job, especially as there will be the actual expectation of winning something within the next four years. The Telegraph report that the front runners are Howe, Potter, Carsley, Pochettino and Tuchel. With Lampard and Gerrard as 'outsiders'.
And I hope they're really, really outside chances ffs.
I'd be happy with Howe or Potter.
Whoever gets picked we can’t allow Lampard and Gerrard to continue failing upwards. If Rooney wasn’t new in a job he’d be considered an outside chance too most likely.
Probably for the best. He can be proud of what he's achieved and the difference between when he took over and nowLooks like Southgate has stepped down.
He’s gone now so everyone who wanted him gone has got their wish. I’m not surprised at all, he knows the public goodwill has gone.I do actually agree that it makes sense to take time over appointing the successor. There isn’t any need to rush and getting it right matters far more.
Unfortunately, the most likely candidates haven’t proven themselves as winners in major tournaments. Unless we’re counting Lee Carsely’s U21 Euros win…He had to go. Took us far but as far as he could and it wasn’t quite enough. We may or may not move on without him but we weren’t going to move forwards with him.
We were supposed to be playing possession based high press football according to Southgates own intentions. Hopefully we can get someone in who can realise that.
I’d say England deserve their spot. Argentina have won their last 3 tournaments, France and us are the most consistent tournament teams over the last 3/4 and Spain currently European championsFIFA top 10 rankings out today. Looking at the list and it's a bit of a sad indictment of where international football is when you look at some of the sides in the top 10 and how ordinary they were in the Euros (i include England in that)
Pepe has officially retired from professional football at the age of 41, what an incredible career he has had.
