Day to day spending largely yes. But borrowing is problematic as you need to then service the interest (in theory, but no country seems to care about getting into more and more debt).

For major infrastructure, printing for growth needs to be considered for the benefits and also compare the inflationary and potential devaluation of the currency against other forms of finance.

As I've said before, it's not something you want to be doing all the time, but at the same time you don't want to dismiss it completely. That idea is simplistic and outdated.

We don’t have to borrow, we can always use government bonds to pay for infrastructure, nationalisation etc. I’ve always been led to believe that’s how we went through mass nationalisation during and after the war. It essentially doesn’t then cost the taxpayers anything other than interest on the bonds which should be being paid out of profits. Train operators are a different case as there’s the option of just letting the franchises run down but if you take the water companies which desperately need nationalising again. But the shares with government bonds (there is a train of thought that we could actually do this for less than current share prices as the debt would have to be considered against the share price) and then restructure the debt with government borrowing as the government can borrow at a much better rate than commercial borrowing so the debt is cheaper to maintain. I’ve read a couple of articles on it now and they suggest that the debt could be settled in 5 years and the water companies can then be run with the sole purpose of cleaning up waterways through modernisation while offering best value to the customer instead of being a vehicle to load debt against so you can pay out bonuses and dividends, which seems to be their primary purpose as things stand.

In the meantime, Starmer has now suspended MP’s that voted to demonstrate their commitment to lift hundreds of thousands of kids out of poverty. Most people will not be interested in the minutiae of whether it was a tactical amendment or not.
