Have to disagree

Without Goddens goals in the first 2 months of the season we are bottom after 10 games
I think if you actually go back and check the goals he scored they didn't actually gain us many points and were definitely papering over the cracks in his game. The people predicting he could carry on at that rate with the way he was playing were mentalists and in reality i still think Simms should have been playing from the off.
It says a lot but i'd actually be happier going into the season with Tavares as cover than Godden now. As i say though, it feels inevitable another CF will come in anyway.

If Godden hadn’t played someone else would have and they may have scored more/ less / the same goals …..

Neither Godden nor Tavares have the physical attributes to play through the centre on their own. Neither are suitable replacements for Simms.

But the point being made is we need to replace him. We don’t. For me Tavares, given the games, is an upgrade on last seasons Godden.
Guess we might find out! My issue is Tavares is all very well for a change to injxt some pace, if we're looking for cover for Simms then they're not exactly the same type of player(!) so lets see how good the management and coaching staff are in coming up with different patterns of play depending on who's up top.

I think we’re under selling the options we have. One that interests me is Tavares. His position is CF. He’s been played on the wing. But actually when he gets central he looks like a very natural goal scorer. And let’s not forget we have Simms and then Wright. Godden played no part at all last year in reality.
Don't know how anyone can draw any conclusions about Tavares centrally given how little he's played there.

I'd be disappointed if he's directly behind Simms in the hierarchy.

If that's the situation then we can understand that but its still disappointing for fans not to see or hear of any action other than an outgoing striker with no replacement and other supposed targets signing elsewhere whilst the window gradually ticks away
Its very reassuring not to see or hear of any action. On the face of it transfer activity is being kept under wraps which is exactly as it should be. We should only find out on the verge of it happening .

I think we might be overselling what we are likely to bring in. As Robins says we never buy the finished article. This Ntelo fella for example might have high potential but at a similar age to Tavares is he really any more ready to impact on this coming season?

I wouldn’t mind a couple of loans to finish our summer business really. Paris Maghoma from Brentford would be good fit as one of the 8s is a 433 system.

Simms
Wright
Sakamoto
EMC
Raphael
Obikwu
Tavares

if we had these seven as our options across the front three until Jan, do people think we'd be OK, or be at risk of missing top 6 as a result?
That lot should be there or there abouts til January barring a major injury crisis. Robins would have to take a view on whether the bottom 3 are actually going to have a role though because 1 injury up top they are are first up on the subs bench (alongside Palmer).

Interesting to compare the first 4 names to previous seasons. Looking back over previous years the numbers are comparable but the quality really nosedives after Gyokeres (Godden/CO'H). When was the last time we had even this much depth?

Tavares is a quick striker, and from what we've seen a good finisher. With the right setup he could be useful, but he won't be able to play down the middle of his own. He did a fair job at RW at the end of last season, but he'll be nowhere near the team if that's now considered his position, with Rodrigues, Sakamoto & Mason-Clark available.

Simms is not our only striker. We spent £9 million on Wright and he's our most expensive player ever and £4.5 on EMC. Neither are going to be spending much time on the bench.

We also have Tavares who has a better strike rate than any of our strikers, Obikwu and Dausch.

We’ve gone over this before. There isn’t the coverage you need for a long campaign and if either Wright, Simms, EMC gets injured… you can’t have players simultaneously covering 2-3 positions. That is, if you expect to be pushing at the top of the table which is our goal.

Tavares has scored two league goals in 21 league games, that’s nearly a goal per 11 games. Not sure where you got this ‘best strike rate’ statistic. Even so, he made most of his appearances at RW, Obikwu and Dausch are development players. They won’t feature much this season.

Whichever way you look at it, I don’t think either of these 3 players would be a better option than Matty Godden. It’s particularly unfair to have that expectation on Obikwu and Dausch - they’re not ready.

So wild thoughts etc above.

Tavares is not good enough. The end.

we need a striker and a CM desperately. Robins knows that, the “gaffer” 🤦🏻‍♂️ will not be happy with what we have (currently as of today we have a bloody lightweight midfield - sheaf /torp injured, Allen bad last 12 months fitness wise)

So throughout pre season so far we have used 26 players, during the three games, if Dovin plays tomorrow it’ll make 27.

If as expected we stick with the 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 going into the Stoke game, I believe we will have sufficient depth, there will be two players in every position at this point, if not more in some cases. Now you can argue whether some these players will be ready immediately, the likes of Obikwu, Andrews, Dausch, but if we don’t sign anyone else then that would suggest to me that the manager has some trust in these players and I’m happy to go with his judgement. Obikwu is raw but does look to have all the right attributes and he’s scored a couple of goals in pre season already. Dausch and Andrews have also looked good.

If we had the luxury I’d sign an experienced striker and centre midfielder to be backup, but if we are talking backups then why not consider some of the promising youngsters knocking around, they will come on leaps and bounds around the first team, plus they’re likely to be a cheaper outlay financially.

Having a proven third striker is not a luxury it’s a necessity if you want to have a proper tilt at promotion….

One of the key reasons McKenna attributed to their success last season was having 3 forwards on the bench that he could swap for the 3 on the pitch with minimal reduction in quality …. Fresh legs in the final 20 mins when opposition defenders were tiring ….:

No rush, we'll definitely get striking back up but it needs to be just that. Someone to come in and develop. Can't see a loan what's the point? Won't be anyone with any reputation as the parent would want guaranteed game time which we can't offer. Other than that we have our own youngsters to develop in Tavares and Obikwu no point in taking in an unknown loan for the sake of it.

I feel like we'll get in a prospect but needs to be the right fit. It'll come

I think Andrews being on the bench quite a lot last season was to get him ready for this year. I think he will play a part this campaign. Hopefully he'll be the next Maddison, but stay with us as we are promoted to the prem 💪💪💪
I like Andrews, think he looks like someone that can develop into a good player. Like Eccles did, a loan to L1 best serves his development at this stage imo. The same applies to Obikwu and perhaps Dausch (may need another year in the development team) too in my book.

I'd say quality wise our weakest spots are left back and a sub RB. If we can bring in someone who can play both then bonus

I think obikwu may well be first team this year
I think he's better served out on loan at this point too but he's an interesting player for sure, maybe it could just click for him all of a sudden like Callum Wilson. Hope so, I'd really like the academy to start producing again.
