Stoke Player Ratings (7 Viewers)

Why? Didn't have a shot, put no passes together, gave the ball away, won no second balls, allowed easy crosses constantly. None of them deserve praise today. A 5 is an average performance in a 1-10 rating. Who do you think was above average?!?!
Back 4 were average. Midfield poor except rudoni. Front 3 ineffectual but had little support.

Dovin 5
MVE 6
Thomas 4
Binks 5
Bidwell 4
Allen 4
Torp 5
Rudoni 6
Sakamoto 5
Simms 6
EMC 4

Subs - who cares
Taking 6 as a benchmark for a competent/expected level, and on the basis of the performance, the lack of energy, creativity and application to get even the basics right, these look about right ~ slight nit pick re Dovin and Bidwell, who I’d probably both rate a mark higher.

This was a proper match not a pre season non contact game. Our midfield was very poor and bullied by a team with loads of their first choice players missing. They were ready for our wingers and tactically out though us in the first half. Second half we bossed it but never looked like scoring. Should have been at least one down at half time. Stoke had no recognised scorers on the pitch yet still looked more likely to put it in the net.
Rudoni's corners were no better than last year and on the ball he takes too many touches on occasion. EMC looked poor, Allen easily knocked off the ball and kept over hitting crucial passes. Torp largely not effective. Simms and Hadji Wright looked like they did at the start of last season.
Someone told me Eccles is carrying a minor injury. We need Sheaf back ASAP.

He must be. It's the only possible explanation for starting him on the bench.

I cannot imagine Robins thought that Allen and Torp would make the best midfield two.

Cant face individual ratings, so a summary
Milan is an exceptional player.
Midfield was the problem, particularly Victor
Stoke out played us in first half.
Second half we dominated without creating chances.

Dovin, Binks and Jake were good. Banks passing standard was low.
Sake anonymous first half but improved second half. Jack didn't have an obvious position to play in first half but improved a lot second half.
Ellis should have stayed on field.

Mason-Clarke probably the most disappointing player for me. Should have left Wright to play. another day.

Disappointing result and trip to Stoke. However no need to overly worry. Need a stronger midfield is the main take from match.

I thought Torp was dire. Allen struggled but it was mostly just him in the middle. He was totally pedestrian all game.

When Torp starts a game it always seems to pass him by. When he comes off the bench he shows glimmers of being a good player. But he never really bosses a game. He hasn't got the pace to be a box to box player, not robust enough in the tackle to be a DM and not skilful enough to be an attacking mid.

I think he is destined to be a squad player at this level. Happy if he proves me wrong though.

It was one of those days when everyone was off it apart from Rudoni.

Was just about to say I can’t understand how MVE isn’t getting an 8 from anyone. He intercepted a lot, was up and down the whole game, got past his man a couple of times in attack as well.

Binks was another 8 for me without seeing his involvement back for the goal yet but not sure that was much his fault and he was very good throughout otherwise.

Simms is still too nice at times. And the rest were all 6’s or lower. Allen is taking some stick so I won’t pile on to that with listing his score (much better second half though tbf).
MVE. I would give him 9.5.
Absolutely top class. Maximum one more season with us ie only this season and that's not certain.

I wouldn't of played Palmer as a CDM, Eccles would of fulfilled that position

Palmer would of replaced Torp who was a total passenger today.

I would never start Allen in the Championship, to do so is utterly baffling.

And yes we were poor everywhere. Simms looked like the Simms of the beginning of last season, EMC was very disapointing, Saka tried hard but got little service and the defence looked disjointed. Dovin looked rooted to his line, and Bidwell looked at fault for the goal.

But on a plus note, Sheaf's value has just rocketed.
Not sure how you can criticise Simms he got 0 service and when he did get the ball was pulled back every time with no free kick

That’s fair for me. The best midfielders take the ball on the half turn and develop play. Torp needs three touches and then plays it square.

I don't think he even had three touches in the first half.

Torp sort of played alongside him though, it was 4-2-3-1 I'd say. It didn't work at all.
Agree with that. I think Sheaf or Eccles with him, gives him the freedom to push on a bit. With Allen playing there (who also isn't a CDM) he ended up playing just as deep as him.

Agree with that. Especially getting sheaf back in the side before he is sold

Crazy mark for both. Allen tried hard in second half.
Isn’t that what we used to say about little Johnny in the under 10s
At least he tried hard
I’m sorry but running alongside attacking players not able to keep up or tackle
Standing in the middle of the pitch on his own with no opposition players near him
There were a lot of poor performances out there I include Torp in that but Allen shouldn’t be a starter let alone play 90 minutes
As a lot have said we need strength in the midfield hopefully we bring that in before the end of August

I’ve woken up today really really deflated after that performance. I appreciate it is just one game but there are glaring issues within both defence and midfield that just haven’t been rectified.

Whilst I do think they are good solid players at this level, I don’t see Thomas, Binks or Bidwell as top 6 defenders. When Sheaf is injured, our midfield are nowhere near top 6 either although Rudoni is showing great promise.

Seems like a massive reality check after a pre season of genuine optimism which maybe we needed.

It was the same as the end of last season lethargic, passing the ball around square and backwards with little attacking intent and allowing the opposition to get set.
Preseason had led us to believe we would be on the front foot, more aggressive and move the ball quicker this season but no sign of that yesterday, well after the 2nd minute anyway.

That first attack had me believeing we’d pepper them, but instead we were as toothless as the average person from Sunderland
