First half was good. Second half has been very sloppy, no real rhythm. Should be making a statement here.

No changes by 70 is a bit frustrating , didn't really want to see this lee 🙃

Bit of disappointing 2nd half if I'm honest and a tad worrying that the games gone south for 20 minutes and he's not made a change despite seeing players looking a bit bereft if ideas

Felt a bit Southgatey that. Decent first half, snoozefest second half. It's a win, nothing to make me get excited by England again though. Comfortable win against a team we should be beating comfortably.

Would be nice if we could get someone in with some new ideas when we appoint a permanent manager. Would love it to be Carsley but he probably needs the team to show a little more than that. Let's be honest, we should be winning 6 from 6 here with a massive goal difference.

I only watched the last twenty minutes but I thought they looked ok and kept attacking unlike the previous manager

It’s is but also needs a bit of context. Southgate had to try to prepare us to beat the best teams in the summer and we do usually struggle for a bit of energy at end of season tournaments

Having said that we appear to be pressing better, being a little bit braver on the ball and look far more balanced

I know people talk about mismanagement of TAA but for me the treatment of Gordon* who is aggressive/confident on the ball and has pace on the left was worse. Southgate ignoring him for the whole tournament was bizarre

*I don’t know if he’s the answer long term or not but he offers something different and stretches the game
Southgate had us playing like that against anybody, not just the Euros.

Yeah, but I think he was very much setting up that team structure to be ready for the big boys ie hard to beat
If we were stacked with most of our strength in defence and defensive midfield that would make sense. All it did was stifle our attacking players and produce a list of crimes against football

It was also more excusable in the early stages of his tenure. We started to see a pattern from 2021 onwards that, when we attacked the big sides, we put them under considerable pressure. To then revert to type in the Euros was baffling.

I don’t see any sense in this- we played like it every match. Watching that first half yesterday it occurred to me that we might actually look back at Southgate’s tenure as a massive waste, and a catalogue of “what ifs”. Anthony Gordon’s comments were pretty telling.

FWIW I thought the game yesterday was generally very promising. You can see that there is a structure to the team again, although I’m intrigued what happens when some of the supposed ‘key players’ are back in contention. Decent patterns of play, especially the second goal, seemed a bit lacklustre 2nd half but how much of that was “we’re 2-0 up, just manage the game”.

Gordon at LW posed the exact threat I, and many others, wanted to see in the Euros. Mainoo looked a little sloppy and, having not seen a great deal of him so far this season but having heard stuff, I’m assuming he’s a bit out of form. Would have liked to see more of Angel Gomes, hoping he gets some meaningful minutes in the week.

Still too fond of AAATB for me, and it got us in trouble again yesterday, but old habits will die hard.

Not saying I agree with it but I think that was Southgate logic. Gordon speaks very well. He also made comments prior to the game which were quite telling

There were conspiracies that his talk about us being more aggressive/positive during the tournament (saying we needed to be better), after he got his 4 mins of action, mightve been what led to him not getting another sniff

Southgate is an absolute turd of a manager. Probably best to try and forget him and his coma inducing football and look forward.
I'd love to have a manager that actually has me semi bothered about watching England again.

Yes agreed. Plenty to work on but there’s a lot more to come from players being available for selection and implementing new tactics.

When Grealish scored the stage was set for a 4 or 5 nil drubbing and the intensity wasn’t really there in the 2nd half.

Realistically, however, the game was won and we kept Ireland at arms length. It’s more less a competitive preseason friendly against a much weaker team. Think when we play against Nuneaton in preseason.

Some promising tidbits in that performance and you’d hope this will improve over the 6 games he’s in charge and leading up to 2026 if Carsley gets the job permanently.

A bit odd seeing a player refuse to celebrate a goal in an international game as you sometimes see players doing against their former clubs. Still didn't stop Rice getting a villain's reception anyway.
