Simms and Wright (7 Viewers)

Most were relieved we kept hold of them in the summer because they're two quality strikers at this level.
Yet already they're being rotated and replaced with inferior players. Just like early last season.
If I was Wright and was being replaced by EMC I'd be pissed off.
Likewise BTA for Simms.
They're the best we've got and should be first on the team sheet.

Wright had started every league game bar Watford where 48 hours before that he had played for the USA then flew back coming back in on the Friday for him not to start them wasn’t unreasonable. With the exception of Oxford Wright has been a shadow of what he achieved last season. Yesterday he could have no complaints at being taken off. I agree EMC isn’t at Wrights standard yet but when your not performing yourself you can hardly expect to just stay on the pitch.

We are generally far too slow at getting the ball to the strikers. Midfield always have one extra touch too many and then have to go back to reset. If the full backs have advanced forward they are left badly out of position.

I think it starts before that. The defenders just didn’t move the ball quickly yesterday. Against Watford and spurs we were going quicker down the channels, yesterday back to slow passing around the back.

Binks has got a great raking left to right long pass but needs to learn to move ball quicker the rest of the time. He wasn’t the only one though. Was shocked Dasilva wasn’t on earlier today to help with this

Completely fed up with Simms, I don't think he's anywhere near the level we need. Even when he was scoring goals the second half of last season, I didn't rate him that highly. I think he's very awkward on the ball, has an unbelievably poor first touch for a professional football player and no longer think we can keep hoping he'll turn a corner because he's a "confidence player". If we want to progress as a team we need significantly better, and I would hope Robins starts putting more trust in Basette or BTA to fill that void we have in the no 9 role currently

Simms has been off form, but then so has everyone else. BTA brilliant against Spurs but then awful against Swansea. Haji wildly inconsistent, Mason-Clark yet to fire, Torp very patchy, MVE not good. Even Sakamoto and Sheaf have been way down on last years levels, but of course they are both not 100% match fit yet.
This is what worries me, last season's bad start at least had some players playing well (MVE, Thomas, Sheaf etc). Now every player, with the exception possibly of Eccles is off form, and has been since August. You do wonder if they all get over this bump, and hit form, we'll be some force, but we're over 2 months into the season. How much time do we give it, or are they all crap players.

Just not sure what he is. Not great in the air. Not particularly quick. Not particularly strong. Terrible with the ball at his feet. Poor with his back to goal. Looks OK running on in the channels but doesn’t seem to have in the box instinct or a great shot.

But apart from that he's a quality player🤣

That about sums him up unfortunately. You'd hope we would see signs of development and improvement in some of those areas but we haven't really.
At the minute he needs someone to lay it on a plate for him and we don't have those players anymore.

Looking at the stats, Simms "Progressive passes received" has gone from being in top 8% last season. to bottom 16% this season. That would suggest he's not finding space, not getting on the end of passes and that we as a team are not getting the ball forwards enough to the strikers. All things we know.

That's by far the biggest difference. His passing stats are also lower as are goals obviously.

His aerials won is actually a fair bit better this season but that could just point to our "style" being more direct this season.

It seems to me like our own players don't trust Simms with the ball, as most of the time he gets the ball it breaks our attack. Plenty of times on Saturday it seemed Rudi was extremely hesitant to pass to Simms when he saw him in front of him.

If you're playing s*** you have no divine right to start each game regardless of who you are, it is as simple as that. The trouble with us is they are all playing s***!

Simms is such a frustrating player. He really should be making more of his physical attributes and providing a real challenge to defenders marking him. He is often beaten in a foot race, allowing the defender in front of him, when he then inevitably gives the defender a gentle unnescessary push resuling in a free kick to the opposition and the end of any pressure. He plays like he is short sighted and not wearing any lenses, as he always seems slower off the mark against defenders marking him, while his headers are frequenly misplaced, even unchallenged. He kind of got lucky even with the headed goal he scored at Watford!

Given the run he went on in the 2nd half of last season its difficult to give up on him completely, but at the moment he is playing with a complete lack of confidence and providing a timid presence up front. He appears to be a bit of a luxury presence which doesn't fit in with a team struggling to find form, and the more industrious BTA and Bassette are better options when we are trying to find form, while Wright is a whole different class above them all in reality.

I am just gobsmacked that a professional footballer in the championship cannot control the ball with ease! WTF do they do in training¿?????
I also think EMC control is found wanting as well!

We know he can score a goal or two. But if he’s not doing that he adds nothing else. His first touch is embarrassing.

You said we will make a profit on him when we sell

They both remind me of dele adebola. Just bumble along which is fine when it works but it never looks like they put 100% in.

Some wonder moments though. That Adebola goal away at Blackburn under Dowie gives me a semi just thinking about it.

Simms gets dropped after scoring for a 19 year old who’s yet to score.

Wright hauled off at HT for EMC who’s done absolutely nothing of note in a city shirt.

I wonder why they’re not performing.
This is where astute management comes into play. Sadly we appear to be rushing to make subs as we have a deep squad. Part of our secret in seasons gone by has been us having a well drilled team that knew how to play to its strengths, the operating environment and player expectations mean we dont have a siege mentality anymore and Robins cant seem to find a system that works for the squad.

So a 20 goal striker you dont rate 😂

He's someone that Dr Roberts and her team should be working on as a matter of urgency. He is exactly the kind of thing they have been brought in to affect.

Simms should be terrorising defences with his size and build but he seems so meek when he has no confidence. Hiding away. Get the psychologists onto him. He can be a quiet, reserved person. But if he wants to be successful long term he has to learn to be more aggressive on the pitch.

I think I would give him a game in the U21's and get him to fill his boots. If Bassette can tear a defence apart in the space of 15mins, Simms should be able to. And if he can't then he can hardly complain about getting dropped.

I'm hoping that would be able to get him on a good vein of scoring form again, but even if it did I would genuinely look to sell him at that point to maximise return to reinvest and almost inevitably at some point he will return to this version.

The core of the issue is that the forwards just do not have the quality of chances to score. We can bleat about all 4 of our strikers, but they haven’t been provided the chances to score.

Simms proved last year that when supplied with chances, he’ll score. Haji Wright had one shot in the box on Saturday and scored it before it was chalked off.

If we were creating many chances and these players were missing chance after chance, then fair enough… they deserve criticism. Unfortunately, the issue is behind them and last season all 3 (BTA, Wright & Simms) chalked up 46 goals between them.

What? People did rate him in League 2. Try and make sense
Mcnulty was a 20 goal striker, who had a purple patch for half a season, but his career since has showed that maybe he wasn't that good of a player, at least apart from that 6 month purple patch. Maybe there's a similarity with Simms.

There, I've spelt it out for you, which you obviously need as you appear to be the only one who didn't understand it!

Simms fed off palmer seemed to have a good understanding we don't have anyone who can see a pass like palmer did or o hare and as a result simms has gone from a 20m striker to a 2m striker hard to see a way back for him

Simms fed off palmer ? Palmer was never a regular starter , so I don’t think you can use that argument, I think we just have to accept that simms is just lazy and I can’t see him changing.

Palmer played the majority of the games second half of last season as for whatever reason he was preferred over O'hare. Simms went on an amazing scoring run second half of last season.

After 25 matches in the Championship last season, Ellis Simms had scored against two different sides. By the end of the season, he’d scored in nine out of 46 games, half of which were against sides that were relegated or are now in the bottom three. He got one assist in the entire Championship season.

The only time Ellis Simms has been off-form was when he was scoring.

What? Palmer started 21 games last season and was brought on in every other game he wasn’t injured for bar one.

Simms started scoring when Palmer started playing through balls into him we haven't got anybody in the squad who saw the pass palmer could give and as a result Simms is very ineffective they had built up a good understanding
