Left wing middle class elite - “we have failed to win the argument, how can we enforce our unrealistic desires”

”Hit the bastard plebs in the pocket - again and again until they give up”
You do realise that works for any ruling elite, and probably even more so for right wing ones.

They've been pushing bullshit like trickle down economics and giving large companies/rich individuals massive tax breaks for a long long time and do you think that that burden isn't pushed onto the 'bastard plebs' instead?

It's almost funny watching you come on here to complain about every single Labour policy and initiative when the vast majority of what they're doing is little different from the Tories, yet you weren't moaning 24/7 about that for 14 years.

Just fucking say it. Starmer has got to realise that he isn't acting as a barrister any more.

Downing Street: UK would comply with the law on Netanyahu ICC arrest warrant

Downing Street has hinted that Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he arrived in the UK after an international arrest warrant was issued for him.

The prime minister’s official spokesperson said they would “not get into hypotheticals” when asked if the Israeli prime minister would be detained if he arrived on British soil.

“I’m not going to get ahead of the process or provide commentary on individual cases,” he said.

But, PA Media reports, asked if the UK would comply with the law, he said: “The UK will always comply with its legal obligations as set out by domestic law and indeed international law.”

Home secretary Yvette Cooper was coy on the subject during her morning media round appearances earlier. She told viewers of Sky News “That’s not a matter for me as home secretary. What I can say is that obviously the UK government’s position remains that we believe the focus should be on getting a ceasefire in Gaza.”

On the BBC Radio 4 Today programme she expanded on the position, saying:

The international criminal court is obviously independent. We respect the court, its independence, and we are clear of its role, which is different from the UK government’s role.
The vast majority of international criminal court cases do not become a matter for the UK legal processes, law enforcement processes, or for the UK Government.
In the event that they ever do, there are both proper legal processes that have to be followed and also proper government processes that have to be followed – and Foreign Office processes that have to be followed.
So for that reason, you would not expect me to, and I can’t, as home secretary, comment on how those legal processes would be implemented in any individual case. That would be speculative, because I have to respect that legal process.
Taoiseach Simon Harris said earlier today that Irish police would arrest Netanyahu if he arrived in Ireland, adding during an interview on RTÉ that “We support international courts and we apply their warrants.”

Alongside Ireland, the Netherlands, Finland, Italy and Spain are among EU states that have said they would meet their ICC commitments. Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, however, has said he would invite Netanyahu to visit the country in defiance of the warrant.

Conservative shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel labelled the ICC’s decision “deeply concerning and provocative”, while defeated Tory leadership candidate Robert Jenrick, now shadow justice secretary, said “The UK should not enforce this farcical arrest warrant from a politicised court.”

Yesterday, Green party of England and Wales Carla Denyer said that the arrest warrants “make clear that to continue selling arms to Israel is to aid and abet war crimes” and that “the Government must recognise that their approach to the war in Gaza has failed.”

She said the government “must consider far more direct measures to incentivise a ceasefire,” including an “end to arms sales, [and] the introduction of divestments, boycotts and sanctions.”

The Liberal Democrats also backed the court, with foreign affairs spokesperson Calum Miller MP saying on Thursday “The previous Conservative government denigrated the international criminal court and undermined the UK’s standing on the world stage. It is vital that the new government complies with our obligations under international law by committing to upholding this ruling, including enforcing arrest warrants.

This thread hasn’t been going for 14 years and it was the as then upcoming election which was the impetus to start posting on it.

Plus, I really detest Starmer, Milliband, Streeting, Haigh, Reeves, Phillipson. There’s not an ounce of sincerity amongst that lot. As I said on another thread, at least Prescott had genuine working class credentials. This lot are even more fake than Blair was / is.

You know where you stand with the Tories, you are going to get shafted in plain sight and from the front. This load of mealy mouthed poseurs stab you in the back.

Thought about this some more.

It is actually funny that there are so many on here who will have been bemoaning 14 years of Tory government and yet are actually defending this bunch of charlatans.

In a few months the economy seems to have stalled, inflation started to tick back up and interest rates have stalled. The housing target all of a sudden becomes a two term programme and lower energy bills are now in the fiction category. Still, that’s all acceptable because it’s Labour screwing up and not the Tories.

Which begs the question if we know the Tories are going to shaft us, why do they spend so much time in government?

Or is it because they pretend they aren't going to shaft us to get people to vote for them by being...what's the word I'm looking for?....insincere

I think you'll find quite a few people who are extremely disappointed with the current govt and have said a lot of what they're doing is wrong. Largely because it's reheated Tory shite which led to a stalled economy and problems with inflation and interest rates when they did it so it's hardly surprising it's doing it now. And it's not acceptable.

Exactly, so it is entirely acceptable for me to have a dig at this government then - with good reason.

Indeed. Quite a few of the things you've put forward are perfectly valid concerns.

What irks me is the fact you didn't have this incessant outrage at poor performance and sleaze when we had a different govt in. It just takes away from your points because it looks so politically motivated and I doubt you'd be making as many complaints had it been the Tories still in doing almost exactly the same things.

Well, we will just have to wait five years won’t we. I cant post retrospectively.

Anyway, isn’t political motivation a valid enough reason?

The 2016 Democrat style meltdown from the right is absolutely hilarious. They’re doing a petition for a new election now 🤣

It's a pathetic waste of time that won't happen, but equally should be a moment of reflection for not only those who wanted a second Brexit vote, but who screamed for an election throughout the past government at every juncture. It's all dreadful. I'm not a Labour voter, but they've been given 5 years so let's see if they can deliver. Petty squabbling and point scoring is for forums like this not politicians, so let them govern. If you don't like what they give us then you'll have an opportunity to remove them at the next election.

If challenging a democratic outcome was good enough for Remainers, why not.

Especially given a minority of the electorate voted Labour, unlike Brexit which a majority voted for,

Think youd probably find there's a lot of Labour voters have signed that ridiculous petition. People who feel they were duped.

Have to say though, I'm loving this Labour Govt.
I knew they'd be bad, far worse than the previous useless lot, but they've gone that extra mile; determined to prove to those hopelessly optimistic fools who elected them that no matter what, Labour will always make things much worse.

Five years will be more than enough to convince the electorate that these idiots must never get a sniff of power again and that the country needs to move firmly to the right. Love it.

Take your medicine.

I think if at this point you’re frothing at the mouth about a fairly middle of the road government that’s not done much, you probably need to check your media diet. The reaction from the right really has been like Trump Derangement Syndrome in 2016.

Absolutely pointless unless they get over 50% of the electorate to sign it.
And even then there's no precedent for another election.
It's amazing what people will sign when it's cold, wet and windy outside.
It will be pointless whatever, other than possibly making Never Here Two Tier consider how it’s gone so wrong, so quickly.

How the debate and response is conducted will be interesting, especially given the wish to revisit Brexit for the nth time.

It’s true that they have not done much other than lie and row back on their pre-election promises.

How would you characterise the left’s reaction to the outcome of the Brexit referendum?

There was a hell of a lot of mouth frothing then. And just who funded Gina Miller?

Which promises have they rowed back on? Genuine question.

For example

New housing - now a two term policy.
£300 p.a. reduction in fuel costs.p, now never mentioned in the hope that it is forgotten
Economic growth.
Winter Fuel Allowance.
Ending hotel use for asylum seekers ( new ones being introduced in Coventry and Warwick)
Crime (2 tier Keir)

Perhaps most of all, and in summary, from their website

“The 2024 General Election on Thursday 4 July is a stark choice between more of the same chaos and decline with the Conservatives, or real change with Labour.”

I haven't personally signed the petition in the link I posted, but in the three and a half hours since I did a staggering 400,000 more people have signed the petition.
That's some momentum.

Same. FPBE, Democrats in 2016, MAGA in 2020, Tories in 2024, all various cheeks of the omniarse. You lost get over it.

Don’t like this turn towards the politics of two year olds after too much screen time.

I've signed it!
It's pointless like you say but its a good alternative to voicing opinion in a singular non combative way. It might only be the beginning of Labour's term but working in a small private company I'm feeling well and truely shafted at the moment. Honestly we're being treated as idiots, did they really we're that stupid to think a penny off a pint would appease us, not getting the fact that min wage, NI and rising energy costs would have us paying more for everything whilst paying more for shoddy public services.
The next step will be petition to the king which may make Starmer take a look at how he's doing things.
