Fascinating, I was talking about the days when we only had one to eleven on the shirts, if Michael Doyle had been playing back in them days he would have been the number four. 😎
Yeah I agree he would have been. I must have misinterpreted your original comment.

I do think Eccles is a good player and as the academy seems to have dried up for a while, it is good that we have one in our team on merit and not because he is purely a Coventry lad, like we have had in the past with the likes of Kevin Thornton and Curtis Wynter etc

I remember the good old days when the number 6 plays long side the number 5 both Centre Half's.

And the number 4 would be the defensive midfielder i.e Ernie Machin ,Lloyd McGrath, Michael Doyle.

The “good old days” of rigid formations and dull, unimaginative football. Thank goodness we’ve moved on.

😂😂😂 Yeah not like today, players rolling around on the floor and playing chuckle brothers football.

"To me to you" and always passing it inside.

Yeah that's really entertaining.

Yeah, posted this before but in the good old 442, pre big squad number days, the numbers would be:

1 GK
2 RB
3 LB
4 CM/DM
5 CB
6 CB
7 RM
8 CM/AM
9 ST
10 ST
11 LM

Michael Doyle wore 17 when signed the first time in 2003/04 and continued with it for the next season. The season afterwards
(2005/06) He moved to number 8 and was captaining that season if my memory serves. Then he wore 8 until he was loaned out to Leeds in 2009/10. He then had 8 again when he returned in League 2 in 2017/18. I am a bit of a Doyle fan if you can not tell and was my favourite player after McSheffrey left in 2006.

TLDR: Doyle did not wear 4 for us. He wore 17 and then 8
So who was our best No. 17? Doyle or Gyokeres? 😊

I’m guessing you’re the one shouting “forward” at every opportunity? If you took off your rose-tinted glasses, you’ld see that the standard of football and technical ability are now light years ahead of your good old days. Added to that, I’m sure you would also remember the dreadful pitches, the incessant backpasses, no incentive to try and win games (as only 2 points for a win), unpunished thuggery on the pitch, poor crowds, appalling stadiums.
Is it perfect? Of course not - we’ve got VAR, weak referees not enforcing the laws/guidance, undoubtedly more playacting and the game being run by Sky. But on balance, it’s a massively better sport to watch. And before you ask, I’ve been watching since 1964 so suffered through the old (but not good) days.

For the record I've never shouted forward, shoot yes, not enough shooting in our team is what I say. 😎

Maybe. But you said in the old days with 1-11 he'd be 4. He had no 8 for years which, last time I checked, was between 1 and 11.

Right let's talk hypothetically, if Ian Gibson and Michael Doyle were in the same side who would be the number 4 and who would be the number 8.

Yeah, I used to be one of those shouting "forward" and "shoot" at every opportunity, but just look how many goals Clarrie Bourton got that season.

It was justified and "lump it forward and shoot" was tactical masterstroke of its day

I'm not disagreeing with you on what number he should be in this hypothetical 1-11. I'm saying he literally was 8. For years.

Though I will be controversial in saying I never liked having the 4 as a midfielder with 5 and 6 as defenders. I preferred 4 as a CB and 6 as a midfielder.

They had to adapt to the pitches they played on, it didn’t make it good to watch though. But if you saw Clarrie Bourton play I’ll obviously bow to your first-hand knowledge.

Ok if that's what you prefer, what's more important is ,what position did they actually play. 😎

He didn't want to go.
We could have tried to force him out for the money, (has happened often in the past), but we didn't, and equally he could have dug his heels in.

One things for sure, his value has dropped, and I'd say quite dramatically.

I hear you, but I would say his value hasn't dropped that dramatically. I don't think it was anywhere near as high as some were making out it was in the first place. This is partially qualified by no real suitable offers coming in. If there had been no question Doug would have sold him.

Missed all of pre-season, chucked into a team in disarray and expected to lead the ship. Give him 5-6 months of injury free football and his value will dramatically rise again. (contract dependant of course)

I think it has, he has looked much worse than last season.

Well we will have to disagree there I think. He's doing everything I've always been pointing out, I just think after so long of looking through rose-tinted glasses, his weaknesses are now a bit more well known and widely accepted. You couldn't criticise him last season without causing a meltdown, but I'm genuinely not seeing a huge difference.

Even those one dimensional stat websites are giving him high scores still, but they don't, and never have, painted the full picture. In the same playground, Basette was rated our lowest performing player on futmob on Saturday - the same website most of the Sheaf clique use all the time.

I really think there was always a hype train that people jumped on and got carried away with.
